Oh boy here we go: "Physicists May Have Evidence Universe Is A Computer Simulation"

Consciousness is not a well defined concept. In a simulation it would essentially be a word used to describe a bunch of things being in a certain state simultaneously, which is actually the closest you can come to a description in real life. In other words, it's irrelevant.
If this is just a simulation, then how do we have consciousness?
What do you mean? Is there something about a computer that precludes the existence of consciousness, or intelligence?
So what? Doesn't really change anything. The fact that we "just won't have a purpose anymore!" won't really matter on account on how true that is already.

It would actually give us more of a purpose, really.
Up-Up-Down-Down-Left-Right-Left-Right B, A, Start.
But computers can't have conscious thoughts. They're just a bunch of 1's and 0's.
If we're just simulations, why do we posess these things?
Who are you to say that, if programmed correctly, they don't? How are humans any different from computers?
If this is just a simulation, then how do we have consciousness?
Simulations simulate many variables. Our consciousness would be nothing more than a form of subroutines that partake in this "simulation universe".
Personally I feel this is all BS and that there is a lot more to it than some computer program. Because if that were the case, then why don't we have super humans who have found ways around the system?
The evidence bit is just (as usual) media hype.
The document is here: http://arxiv.org/pdf/1210.1847v1.pdf
I didn't read all of the "how it was done" since I'm not an expert in physics and I don't know all the terms and such. But the introduction and conclusion should be enough.
even if we were in a simulation, so what. Do we just give up as a race? We can't escape this simulation and be something else.
We do this.

People are just chemicals and synapses firing. We're nothing more than squishy computers.
I always knew that its either this world has no god or a neckbeard is watching me masturbate all day.
I just hope the latter won't be true
Because if that were the case, then why don't we have super humans who have found ways around the system?
better question: why would we?
I feel like that if we existed in a simulation that was well created, it'd be very difficult to determine the limits of it. There'd probably be many safeguards to prevent self awareness if the goal was to simulate a society similar to its creators. Though, this point would be rendered moot if the creators did not intend to replicate their own world. But this would mean we'd have no concept of their rules and our restrictions would not be applicable.
If we were a simulation, I don't think we'd be able to really tell.

Because we wouldn't be programmed with the capacity to do so I imagine.
if you were to try to program a game where your AI could "Cheat", it wouldn't actually be cheating, because it actually would be abiding by the rules you programmed into it.
Even the smartest AI in the world has limits, and even an adaptive AI that can learn can only learn by what's around it.
Oh dear god....these people just unleashed a shitstorm of epic proportions.
I'm just hoping our universe isn't being simulated by some families basement dwelling 30 year old neckbeard son.
Oh god, I'm at the same time too horrified to to masturbate, but oddly turned on enough to get a boner.
I can't access the Mars expansion.

Don't worry, I'm doubtful it'll happen in our lifetime. Let's just do what politicians do and let the future generations take care of it. :v:
Ultimate goal in life is to create a computer simulation with the goal of creating a computer simulation with a goal of creating a computer simulation with a ....
It's already been done.
You can create a 200x200 or something like that arrangement that uses gliders to communicate with adjacent blocks of identical structure, and run a game of life within a game of life.
So what if life is a simulation. They just better keep the server on so I continue loving it.
The tutorial for this game is so fucking long
Guys I just want to pick a profession and start earning coins
help
inb4 we are just a big version of Sims
If this is just a simulation, then how do we have consciousness?
In the same way that we do in a 'real' universe.
Somewhere in Heaven, God is banging on "Ctrl-Alt-Del" on the keyboard, trying to abort the program before we find out.
So when can I leave the Matrix already? I want to go to Zion and have orgy sex.
Noclip?

alright, let's test this out
So what if life is a simulation. They just better keep the server on so I continue loving it.
the funny thing is that the server could stop for billions of years (if the actual universe has time) and restart later and we'd never notice because we'd be frozen.
Also, this is fun: If universes were stacked simulations, your consciousness could be put onto a robot in the next universe up, allowing you to travel between levels of reality.
Well shit Let's hope We don't have to update and restart the Universe....
While I find this idea neat, it seems more unlikely than likely. If we were a simulation, who is to say that those who created us aren't a simulation as well? It gets more and more unlikely as you go up the "ladder". It must have all started from somewhere, so it's more likely that we're it as we're the only universe that has been perceived.

With this mindset, maybe the server for this universe or system isn't real time. Maybe it takes a couple hundred thousand years to render half a second of our lives, on some kind of invincible timeless machine.
Holy shit theories are fun.
i like to think that whenever i'm playing a video game, all the characters and what not actually exist in that world and they don't really question much
