should've worn steel jeans. battery fuel can't melt steel jeans
By then it's probably nearly already too late. If your phone happens to be in some sort of a medium to high quality case (think Otterbox), then by the time you notice stuff on the back, it's almost certainly too late.
Imagine noticing it and slowly taking the case apart if it has multiple parts to the case. It's almost like defusing it.
Phones should have some sort of hazard detection system for things such as this. It can't be too difficult to detect swelling of a battery and warning the user.
My old Galaxy Note 1's battery swelled up really bad, but I didn't know that it could catch fire at the time, I just thought it was annoying because it would push the back off and didn't want to spend money on a new one, so I let it go. Got my next phone, and decided I was going to smash the old, swelled battery because I hated it for making my phone randomly turn off all the time. It basically exploded and now I know not to fuck with these kinds of batteries.

I know this is a lith-ion problem but I hear it only happening to iphones it seems
A lot of black people appear to be getting killed by cops in the news these days
yeah, a girl with her phone under her pillow got first degree burns to her face and neck when her iphone lit up
There was also a case when it burnt some guys leg a month or two ago, not sure was it iphone or some other phone.
A lot of black people appear to be getting killed by cops in the news these days
Where did this even come from? :v:
I work in a phone repair shop and learned the hard way how dangerous LiPos are. Was taking out a battery and prying it off because the adhesive Apple uses for their batteries is strong as fuck. I was using s bit of plastic to get leverage and suddenly BAM smoke, a flash of fire and my fingers going from Raw to Rare. Didn't even puncture the battery, LiPos can be pure devastation. Also the way phones are built, batteries have little to no space to swell with every cubic millimeter at a high premium, so when a battery swells, something's gonna have to give and it is not pretty.
Maybe they should stop letting artsy fartsy fancy pants designers design the phones and instead let engineers design stuff that is actually made to take the stress of everyday use and not just sit in a display case for people to glare at. I'd rather walk around with an ugly as fuck unpainted brick of plastic looking like a science fiction wizard than get permanent scarring because of things containing dangerous materials being flimsy as fuck for aesthetic reasons.
Being a science fiction wizard does sound cool as fuck though.
Damn thats not good news for Apple
This probably happens all the time, but anytime it happens specifically to Apple it gets all stirred up.
This probably happens all the time, but anytime it happens specifically to Apple it gets all stirred up.
Because the "it just works" mentality is so ingrained to people that when something isn't working, then people are MADLY pissed. And that's especially more true with things after 2012.
A couple weeks ago at my local airsoft site someone's wiring burnt out their LiPo battery and I recall seeing one of the marshalls running across the safe zone with the battery smoking before tossing it into the grass. So yeah, these things can be dangerous if not treated right.
don't expose LiPo to flexing, extreme heat or cold, water or overcharging and they'll be fine. please replace your batteries as soon as you notice swelling and dispose of them properly, because they can cause real damage Apple have replacement programs for swelling LiPos regardless of warranty status
Also lithium batteries smell kind of sweet if they're getting faulty.
just use an appropriate power supply for charging and leave it on a desk. putting phones under pillows is stupid
Don't remember what happened but I woke up one morning with a headache and my phone in my hand, under the pillow. It was hot and the battery was at 1%. Sounds like it could have ended badly
Don't remember what happened but I woke up one morning with a headache and my phone in my hand, under the pillow. It was hot and the battery was at 1%. And while it is not dangerous, it's still better to keep away when you sleep.
you'll notice if an iphone is swelling. the screen lifts out from the side assembly and you can press it in a little. i think a lot of people don't realise that's what causing the screen to lift though, and how dangerous it is this girl probably either treated her phone poorly or got a very bad batch
girls put their phones in their ass pockets and sit on them all day, unless they get lucky and find a pair of pants with decent regular pockets. that or they tend to store them on the tit shelf
You really shouldn't sleep with a phone close to you. Phones emit slight radiation all the time. And while it is not dangerous, it's still better to keep away when you sleep.
I guess I shouldn't sleep near by a window, the sun emits radiation too :v:
what makes it any more dangerous when you're sleeping than when you're carrying it around all day [editline]10th May 2015[/editline] not that there's any amount of danger whatsoever either way
I meant that you shouldn't sleep with a phone literally next to your head (under a pillow). It's not high radiation and probably it doesn't even matter at all. Just saying it's usually better to NOT sleep with phone under your pillow and especially so if it's charging.

This isn't a new problem, the same thing happened to that person that decided it would be a bright idea to charge their phone under the pillow they were sleeping on, causing it to burst. Whether the cause is heat, overcharging, or any number of environmental reasons, batteries are just inherently volatile. It's a shame that newer phones don't allow you to remove and replace the battery, because it can lead to problems like this more often especially if people can't see the battery swelling which is a very bad sign. My old phone's battery was actually expanded to the point where it wouldn't fit in the battery compartment, and I'm sure glad it didn't react violently before I replaced it. Now my new phone, (Moto X 2013 Dev Edition), doesn't even have a replaceable battery, so if it swells in any way I most likely won't be able to notice.
You really shouldn't sleep with a phone close to you. Phones emit slight radiation all the time. And while it is not dangerous, it's still better to keep away when you sleep.
You do realize many many things emit a hell of a lot more radiation than your phone right? We are constantly exposed to minor amounts of radiation especially in this modern age of electronics and technology, even if you literally strap a hundred phones to your head and let them radiate you for a month I really doubt it would cause any serious issues other than a severe loss of dignity.
you are in more danger of dropping your phone on your face when in bed and giving yourself a bruise than any emf damage
I've done this.
I've done this.
Who hasn't? Especially if you're like me and watch porn on your phone, I hold it directly above my face with one hand when I'm watching, and then you get to excited or lose your grip and SMASH. Surprised I haven't broken my nose doing that yet.
Phones should have some sort of hazard detection system for things such as this. I was poking around in the audio folder of my phone, and found this: [T]http://i.imgur.com/4ELwrHH.png[/T]
