-Uh, i know crustaceans and insects are very similar that's why i'm comparing them you twerps-
hey if you guys can eat bricks of ramen you can eat some lovely grasshoppers
Did the UN get the idea from Timon and Pumbaa? [t]http://evolutionsofscience.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/timongrubs.jpg[/t]
look at all you narrow-minded assholes complaining about food prices, world hunger, inequality, global warming, and all that shit, and yet you get defensive at the thought of having to change your habits to improve the situation. it's fucking insects, people have always eaten insects and still do all over the world.
The sad part is that it's that very attitude (Things have to change...but I don't want to have to change my own habits) that's preventing us from making progress on those issues, and I'd bet it's not a minority of people. I've been guilty of it, and I wouldn't be surprised if most of us have. On the subject though, I've eaten chocolate covered cricket before and, once you get over the fact that you're eating an insect, it's damn tasty.
hey umm UN how about you instead Fuck off?
whoa excuuuuuse me didnt know considering alternative food sources was a crime to humanity
Livestock are still an inefficiency in any energy --> human food system i'd just go veggie
Also while I might not enjoy insects, I do consider them a very valuable protein source(For what little resources they cost, they give back quite considerable amounts of calories). If they managed to process bug and flavor it so that it would be completely unidentifiable from say, a beef patty, then I'd be down.

A fly flew into my mouth once I tasted it for the rest of the day So basically fuck off UN
No u eat bugs UN, i double dog dare u
If every home had a garden and a windmill/solar panel array, we could make entire households self sufficient for vegetables and the like. Hell, even a community garden for neighborhoods would be an excellent idea, and they are proven to work very well. If the US cut their military budget in half, we could probably end world hunger for a few years if we took that kind of budget for global food aid. But instead of actually doing something, the UN just tells people it's ok to eat bugs, even though that's probably not on their cafeteria menu.
well insects do have alot of protein in them .. in thailand its already common
I think they're trying to imply to the general audience to be more open about their palate but they dont even tell them what to eat. IE, everyone in this thread is assuming UN is talking about eating flies and maggots and beetles when in reality the UN is probably referring to insects that have traditionally been eaten in other cultures for centuries and milennia, like crickets. Though getting past the fact that they're creepy crawlies is still pretty hard.
Cicadas are p sweet fried or otherwise cooked, don't know what all of you are complaining about
I'd rather just switch to fruit and vegetables. Ain't no way I'm eating insects. And don't even put a spider anywhere near me, don't you dare UN.
Most plausible way would be to introduce it to people ages 1 - 5 so that they haven't been mentally / socially conditioned to find all insects disgusting and unsuitable for eating.
I think the crunchy ones sound even worse than the slimy ones. All those little bits of legs and wings and chitin, guaaah.
I have a hard enough time dealing with lobster legs/tails, let alone bugs.
It's not like people don't eat insects already. Red food dye for example.
I'll pass
I didn't expect such a negative response from facepunch, I Just don't get it, for example lobster and crab look pretty damn disgusting IMO yet people eat it like it is nothing, they aren' t that different from insects at all, also any kind of meat is pretty gross to prepare imo, grab a knife and cut over a bloody mess of a pulp from a cow and tell me it is not disgusting, It's just the way we are acustomed to, but we are denying ourselves of a very pontential way of improving the health of lots of people just because "eww they have legs and spooky eyes" perhaps if insects were processed like meat is or like lobster is, it may be morenapalleable for the prople. Id go down for some crickets anyday of the week
I can deal with locusts & crickets, but anything else, nope. I'm also not a fan of most seafood and some dairy products, so I'm a picky bastard in general
We could eat cicadas in the midwestern US, goddamn those things are a nuisance.
shame no-one sells dishes with insects in them in the uk, I'd quite like to at least try them
I've eaten a few of those seasoned crickets, they honestly aren't too bad. It's like eating a smaller potato chip that was once alive.
So were potatoes :v:

Also we all eat crab and lobsters and shrimps which are basically disgusting shelled sea spiders so why not? [editline]13th May 2013[/editline] dammit [editline]13th May 2013[/editline]
If every home had a garden and a windmill/solar panel array, we could make entire households self sufficient for vegetables and the like. Do snails count? Snails are some tasty motherfuckers. Besides, we already eat a ton of seafood and they're pretty much the insects of the sea so why not actual insects?
Doesn't it take several acres of farmland just to feed one family off of crops alone?
Hydroponics / aquaponics improves efficiency, and can either be stacked, or done vertical. Add in LED growth light powered from something else than fossil fuel and hey, efficient & potent crops. Still in it's infant stage though.
I would try it but sadly there are no food regulations for insects in the EU and thus they are not allowed to be sold.
