UN urges people to eat insects to fight world hunger

I'd eat grasshoppers. they are fairly agreeable. They don't eat anything particularly strange, they are also a pest that eats other food crops so it sort of makes sense to eat them in order to get your food back.
Feeding less desirable insects to pigs would also be brilliant. Pigs don't give a fuck
I've eaten crickets before, deep fried I believe. As mentioned earlier they're kinda like crunchy bacon, but some of the more spicy ones were actually really good.
You're from Singapore, you can't understand the amount of disgust the thought of eating insects can cause on a western.
Let's say dog or human poop was healthy and part of the world ate it, you would still feel pretty sick just thinking about it.
I'm a dog owner and I see nothing wrong in eating dog, hell I'd taste it if I got the chance.
Yo, gimme some deep fried termites, crickets, and tarantulas, and I'll be good
Also I ate frog in Malaysia, it was pretty good.
Locusts are an amazing source of protein, and in the end they're not that different from shrimps. Just deep fry the fuckers and you'll probably not even notice you're eating a creepy crawlie.
Now I feel compelled to fetch a bug net, a pan, some oil, and a pith helmet.
If every home had a garden and a windmill/solar panel array, we could make entire households self sufficient for vegetables and the like. Hell, even a community garden for neighborhoods would be an excellent idea, and they are proven to work very well. If the US cut their military budget in half, we could probably end world hunger for a few years if we took that kind of budget for global food aid.
But instead of actually doing something, the UN just tells people it's ok to eat bugs, even though that's probably not on their cafeteria menu.
If you can plant a home garden that provides a harvest of fruits and vegetables every day for every meal in all seasons you'll get a nobel prize
Y'know, if the world keeps going south like it is at the moment, one day we probably won't have a choice in regards to eating such things; hell it might go even as far as "It's either grilled grasshoppers or going vegan, pal". Or could even go further if we can't effectively sustain grain crop plantations, in which case it'd be "It's either the grasshoppers or starving, pal. ...Why're you lookin' at me like that?"
I could imagine processing them and packing them as insect burgers. It removes the texture that you don't like and could possibly be mixed with other meats in order to reduce the impact that insects have on the flavor, texture, color, etc... Could possibly be used for hot dog meat as well. I personally really dislike insects, but I'd be willing to try it. There really are a lot of possibilities to implement them into the western world. I'd say ground meat is the best way to do it as of right now.

How do they taste in comparison to shrimp, anyway? If you skinned and battered them, would it be hard to differentiate them from something like scampi?
Also apparently some species of locust are kosher according to the kashrut.
Also also, I once ate a scorpion (Buthus Martensi aka Yellow Scorpion) that was suspended in a phial of vodka; it was perfectly safe since it didn't have any venom left, and I faintly recall the meat being kinda alright. Hell I still have the phial in my collection.
Is a complete embarrassment that the UN says this, when we already know that we produce more food than we can eat.
Just think about all the tons that are dumped and destroyed every day on the world because "it´s near of the expiration date", or "it doesn´t look good (most of the time it happens with the fruits, that are healthy yet)".
It doesn´t help neither that the farmers have to destroy a part of their harvest because is too cheap that isn´t profitable or unable to sell it.
If only all the supermarkets of the world would donate the food that they don´t want to a food bank or to the NGO´s, there wouldn´t be famines.
I've done my part by eating these:
I'm torn between trying it or not. I mean, everything in this world that isn't poisonous, was alive and is big enough to chew on is potentially a good enough meal if well prepared..
I think the thing that freaks most people out is eating the insects whole. To the West, it normally isn't done. I'll be honest, I don't eat prawns, for a similar reason (although I also despise the taste and texture). I'd be totally fine with eating them, as long as I don't have to admire the carcass. It makes you feel too much like you're eating something off the ground, which I guess is what creeps out most Westerners.
Ugh, i have swallowed my fair share of retarded flying insects, and my god some of them tasted unbelievably awful. No, i'm sorry.
I think I ate a roach or something by accident once, I have no idea what it was. I was just browsing the web and eating Reese's Puffs cereal off my desk when suddenly I get a particularly crunchy bit, then notice a horrible horrible taste, and an even worse aftertaste. Now I always look at my food before I eat it :v:
Crustaceans mm yes, insects... dunno
uh what what's dumb about this
uh what what's dumb about this
They're pretty much the same thing, except crustaceans are bigger and have harder shells.
uh what what's dumb about this
crustaceans are so similar to so many arachnids and bug like things that it's so blatantly obvious it's prejudice now. FFS people with arachnophobia tend to also be afraid of crustaceans too.
I don't get this. If I eat insects for my dinner, doesn't that just mean that some bacon at the supermarket doesn't get bought and gets thrown out? How am I helping with world hunger?
Also I ate frog in Malaysia, it was pretty good.
whoever disagreed with this has never tried frog legs

Honestly it kind of looks like a noodle wok with brown shrimp. Once you get used to the idea it's probably not bad.
They're pretty much the same thing, except crustaceans are bigger and have harder shells.
I know that, it's sort of why I was comparing them...
I mean I like prawns, but eating insects for some reason seems like a huge step from that
Or maybe implement laws forcing corporations to donate food that gets wasted every year?
The main reason you're all so against this is because you're thinking of eating raw, ill prepared insects.
Imagine taking a shrimp out of water, and eating it. Or a fish. Would you? No, that's disgusting by modern standards. You prepare it properly.
Same with these insects. I would.
The main reason you're all so against this is because you're thinking of eating raw, ill prepared incests
No wonder, eating incest sounds terrible
Bluh, bugs freak me out as is.
I get they're good for you, and they probably taste good, but I just wouldn't be able to do it myself. Plus just the fact it would be crunchy would be offputting as hell.

As in dog poop.
Already ate dog. Dog was good.
"Insects are everywhere and they reproduce quickly, and they have high growth and feed conversion rates and a low environmental footprint," according to the report.
rising corn prices are directly correlated to the food crisis that has been going on in the third world. if it was possible to substitute some of the food we consume with insects, the environmental impact of agriculture would lessen.
Very eerie statements .. ... to-to-to-totalitarian tiptoe to-to-to ...

Heh, reminds me of when my uncle went to America and tried the frog legs they had there.
When asked "How many, sir?" he answered "A dozen or so, I guess" and the waiter just stared at him in horror.
It turns out they were bull-frog legs, and he was presented six plates of bigass frog legs, with dressings and all.
...
He ate them. My uncle did not fuck around.
Aren't chocolate ants delicious?
