AT&T Now Offers Gigabit Internet in Kansas City at the Same Price as Google Fiber, but...
One of my problems with that beyond privacy concerns is the security of that data. They might not do anything with my data beyond marketing, but if they are compromised due to the notorious general lack of security in business, I could be unknowingly and helplessly compromised due to their idiocy.
True, but my bank will re-reimburse me for fraud, Facebook can be gotten back/fixed easily, gmail... Well that's pretty secure. It depends who you do business with and how you value it.
Imagine in the future if one pops up that is able to display stuff like what sites you spend your time on, what your sexual fetishes are, who you talk to, etc.
If someone wants to go through all that trouble let em, honestly compared to what is out there someone who makes 95k/yr is small time.
I get your point though, however it's way to late in the game for me to even care.
Super old and outdated article though; modern VPN protocols with modern authentication methods don't really have such vulnerabilities anymore.
Unless you are properly verifying the certificate even SSLv3 is still vulnerable. But it does come down to what type you are using, if it's a cheap on then welp the security will be more or less shit.

You can always host your own. That's what I do. I don't need to worry about the security or privacy of my Vps if I'm the one setting it up.

The end result of that trouble would be devastating though. I personally would be extremely uncomfortable if all of the skeletons in my closet were dragged out for all potential employers, lovers, family members, and friends to see.
I get your point though, however it's way to late in the game for me to even care.
I think it's important to continue caring even though it appears hopeless. Every person who cares is one more added to the collective voice of opposition against these practices.
If Google does the same kind of thing, well, you can't say "FUCK AT&T" without also saying "FUCK GOOGLE".
Google doesn't charge you $30 per month to opt out.
$30 a month to opt out of privacy invasion? That is fucking insane.
Google doesn't charge you $30 per month to opt out.
Yes, but it's not morally sound to gauge how upset you are with privacy violations based on how much it costs you.
Goddamn greedy fucksticks.
Whatever, I got nothing to hide.
Whatever, I got nothing to hide.
That's a really stupid argument or statement to make, privacy is a fundamental right, and invading it isn't cool at all.
That's a really stupid argument or statement to make, privacy is a fundamental right, and invading it isn't cool at all.
Ok then get off the internet you are being watched all the time.
Whatever, I got nothing to hide.
Let's say you're renting a flat, and the landlord has a key. One day they choose to go snooping about, but even you've got nothing to hide, it's still an invasion of privacy, and you can still feel violated by the intrusion.
Replace the words "renting a flat" with "paying for internet", and "Landlord" with "ISP".
Whatever, I got nothing to hide.
I'm not going off this, but I don't really mind personalized ads, I mean, if you want to show little ticker tape ads personalized to me at the top of my GMail, okay, I'll enjoy my free GMail and other Google apps
If Google does the same kind of thing, well, you can't say "FUCK AT&T" without also saying "FUCK GOOGLE".
Yeah but google doesn't charge me to opt out
I'm going to sound like a broken record at this point, but...
My local co-op, which is nowhere nearly as big as AT&T and isn't making nearly as much money, provides gigabit fiber with no caps, no throttling, they support net neutrality, AND it's only $75 a month. Far as I know, they're not data-mining browsing habits, either. (I certainly haven't seen anything aside from Facebook's typical tracker shit)
Get your fucking shit together, AT&T.
AT&T charges for you to say no to this, Google just makes you change a setting. I don't see Google being the bad guy in this.
to be honest I'm blown away that the government isn't fining companies billions for opt out fees for anything.
opt out fee's are basically criminal. You should be able to call 1 time and opt out. NONE of this bullshit where you have to pay X money. NONE of this bullshit where they will harass you into staying. Just 1 call to say that you want to stop and they have to stop.
I want to see massive reform for this kind of stuff. And when I say massive, I mean companies getting fined twice the amount they make off of opt out fee's.

If a business goes out of business because of it. Good. Fuck them.
this.
this is the kinda shit that won't be tolerated under title II

well Google totally tracks every website through their ISP so nyeh
I guarantee that they'll still track you even if you pay the 30$ extra too.
If they're slimy enough to do this shit no one should be surprised.
As far as I'm concerned they already track everything we do anyways. In the end it's competition and without competition it won't spread to other areas easily so hopefully this trade off will help spread fiber. I do care about my privacy but I'd like fiber internet so for a few ads I'd take it if it was near me.
many hippie tears in this thread

This is entirely speculation, but I wouldn't be surprised if AT&T didn't get handed a big box of cash under the table from nameless nice men in nice suits from the government, because collecting all this data puts it right where the intelligence services can digest it.
No, not toxxing myself on this.

They actually say they'll still track you, you just won't get "personalized ads":
If I do not choose to participate in the AT&T Internet Preferences program, how do I know you are not using my web browsing information?
Using the IP address assigned to each GigaPower account, AT&T scans for your AT&T Internet Preferences election. AT&T will treat your Internet browsing activity in accordance with your election. If you chose to participate in the AT&T Internet Preferences program, your Internet traffic is routed to AT&T's Internet Preferences web browsing and analytics platform. If you chose not to participate in the AT&T Internet Preferences program, your Internet traffic is not routed to the Internet Preferences analytics platform. AT&T may collect and use web browsing information for other purposes, as described in our Privacy Policy, even if you do not participate in the Internet Preferences program.

How greedy can one get
adblock is free too, which makes this even more silly
[editline]19th February 2015[/editline]
unless they force you to watch them every X moment, which would be insane
I live 1 hr away from the only city in america with municipal fiber internet. it's 1gb/s for $70 per month
meanwhile in my town, comcast laughs and cracks its whip at our backs. they just implemented 500gb data caps a month ago.

They can do some bullshit like force an application of their own that detects Adblock and similar programs. Then it just shows a message like "Unable to connect to ad-servers, please disable any ad-blocking programs blah blah blah." instead of loading a page when you try to browse the internet.
Some sites already do that, usually on videos though.
thank god I have a modified hosts file
even sites that bitch about adblock don't effect me :v:
couldn't you just encrypt your traffic to spoil at&t's shit?
