If we want sheer insanity with odds, there was the case of Lachhiman Gurung, holding off 200 Japanese soldiers in WW2 Burma, and killed 31.

Then every country that has ever existed is an asshole. A strictly defensive military would not fair too well in a war as it guarantees all the fighting is going to happen on their land.
That being said, I don't really think we should be in the middle east at all.

The soldiers don't have a choice in the matter. The politicians becoming assholes, I'll give you, but not the soldiers.

They choose to fight the wars of the politicians... they could get another job, they don't have to fight, they're not idiots, they make their own minds up.

Once you join the military, you are in the military. If war is declared you have to go; its a criminal offence not to.
I don't know about you but, to strip a fallen soldiers gear off of his body, you have to be a whole new kind of asshole.
If am at risk of being shot at and there's a dead dude with armour, a gun and ammo that's worth more than everything else I've seen in the past week combined you can bet your ass I'm taking it.

if you join for a reason other than needing money, then yeah i agree. but the fact is that America has quite a few benefits for joining the military that they don't give for any other job, so you don't necessarily have to want to join to be more or less forced into it by circumstance.

You're right. As soon as I stepped foot into Afghanistan I started flipping everyone off and shouting obscenities at everyone. This is exactly what happens.
More info on the man's actions. He was also in the same fight as Medal of Honor recipient Dakota Meyer
Swenson was serving as an embedded trainer and mentor to Afghan border police when U.S. and Afghan troops walked into an ambush in Kunar province, Afghanistan, on Sept. 8, 2009.
Swenson was on a different mountainside than Meyer when the ambush happened, but he, like Meyer, went into gunfire again and again during the six-hour battle to evacuate the wounded and recover the dead. As the battle raged on, Swenson’s repeated calls for support went unanswered.
Swenson will be presented the medal by President Barack Obama at the White House on Oct. 15, making him the sixth living recipient of the award for actions in Afghanistan
Um, the military isn't a police force.
Medal of Honor sucks, why dont they give him CallOfDuty: Dog?
Familiar with the Battle of Mogadishu? It's the fight that Black Hawk Down is based on, and the actual events are pretty terrifying to consider. The book is pretty fascinating, too. A great read, if a bit morbid.

Not diminishing how awesome that was, but the Long Tan did not have the luxury of facing an inferior force, or daylight for that matter.
