I do, but how do you know that hiroshima/nagasaki wasn't a test to see the effects of radiation? How do you know they didn't know about it (airbursts)?

Scientists standing on ground zero after a nuclear test. If they knew about radiation they wouldn't be there. Plenty other cases of scientists who got fucked up because of their work on nukes.
And okay why would they think of airbursting a nuke. Give me one good reason they would.

They knew all about Ionizing radiation created from Nuclear bombs, they didn't really study the effects it had in great detail but they knew it was there and they knew it was bad for you.
There are high altitude tests and they give off a nice EMP, but they are mostly used to test the yield of a bomb or take out satelites. You can use small nuclear warheads to give a smaller explosion but you might as well just use a conventional bomb.
