Source engine being used to make a feature length film.

Fine people that appreciate "arhaic" game engines like me I still play hl2 and the episodes from time to time.
Those games never age in my opinion.
Yes it's good, if you're making a full length machinima about gmod. If you want to make an actual movie, then no. Well sure you can make but source's toolset is not very good when it comes to that.
I am sure Valve would be kind enough to lend them Source Filmmaker for this.
We all had to have seen this sooner or later. Most of the Meet the Team videos, plus the Dota 2 trailer were damn near off-line renderer quality. I hope the movie doesn't bust because people think it's a gimmick.
Holy shit what, am I dreaming?
So what if they are using Source engine, Valve provides them everything they need to make it look awesome.
"B-b-but it's outdated" boohoo, check "Dear Esther" mod.
I love the source engine, therefore I will watch it.
No, this is stupid. Use an actual animation program if you're going to make an animated film. Source is for games and for game-related cinematics. Not feature length films.
Uhhhh meet the team videos looked pretty good.
If they get the right art style the movie will look great
I sure hope we get a trailer.

i hope they know the source engine is really limited right?
SNAPHSOT OVERFLOW everywhere.

Wonder if they'll show this at the beginning

I'm sold
Because it is such an incredibly versatile and resilient engine? Quite frankly, you could make the Source engine look like CryEngine 3 if you put in the effort.
I think that's actually been done, look at Dear Esther, the caves look like something made on an engine far more modern than Source actually is.

Dear Esther was a beautiful game, it really amazed me how source could look if it was modified enough.
Would be nice to see SFM on something that's not Team Fortress 2.

Read people.
So, really, just think about the source film maker.
I didn't understand, community-created content for a film? What?
I assume this is some indie thing, because I can't imagine many investors would put money on a feature length machinima.
That's the thing, put in effort. You would literally need to bend source as much as possible, create shit loads of custom shaders etc only to look as good as cryengine 3 looks like from the start.
Licensing could be the reason, but still.
Or you could use the already made custom shaders that one guy made :v:

Its not actually.
A lot of you guys are running around talking like the flexibility and ability to run and render on just about anything is downsides.
The fact of the matter is this, if you were to compare the jaggy count of Source and Unreal. Source would win, because it doesn't use the same shader loading style and therefore can actually make everything look smooth.
A lot of the issues you all keep bringing up could actually be fixed and modified. The AA and AF can't be changed, its core part of any engine. Unreal, SUCKS at AA and AF.

It's not a machinima, it's a movie being made by a studio with special tools from valve that serve the same purpose as, say, Renderman.
I guess it would be easier to make movies if SFM was already released. But anyway, good luck for them.

Valve provided SFM to them

no thanks
Everything in the last exty years is post apocalyptic, or zombies. Or post-zombie-apocalypse.
I thought the meet the team videos were created in valves preferred 3D Modeling software? Maya wasn't it?

Basically this, theoretically if Valve put in the effort to overhaul it extensively, even more than what they did for Episode 2, it would likely have the capacity/ability to even be able to compete with Unreal 4. This in no small part to the engine's absurd modularity; a programmer who is savvy enough could rip parts out of other engines and get them to work on Source.
