The only point you've provided in your post is wrong.
They've added this functionality. What exactly is your point?

...that you can indeed do dayandnight cycles in Source?
Ross Scot would be recoiling in horror right now...
Just why source ? There are a lot better engines to use like for example cryengine 3.
Source has a free SDK and good lighting, even by today's standards. Plus, it has more resources. For example, who ever is making the film can find mods, tutorials, an programmers experienced with Source. The only other engines that I think come close are the DOOM, Quake, and Unreal engines.

-snip- thinking of a different guy
Still waiting for my TF2 movie. We have the resources. It must be done.

They'd have to make it R-rated to be in-theme with the game, and by doing that it would never sell in the United States due to the animation age ghetto(why every notable animated/CGI movie ever in the US has been kiddie fare).
Whenever people get into arguements about the aging of source, the only thing I can agree with is the .bsp and how Hammer is.
But from games like Xenoclash, you've been shown that its possible to mod the actual map editor to do smooth and organic map levels.
tldr, when will it come out?
I think they made a good choice in engine. Valve has allowed the Source engine to age gracefully over the years, while other companies release a new engine yearly.

If you can't tell the features of an engine by the features that it actually has then call me fucking crazy because otherwise I just don't get it. They modded it in. You can do day and night cycles with this mod. Don't you understand the difference?
off topic i know, but i wish minecraft was on source
First off, this guy has a masters on film shit from UCLA, second, he has won awards at indie film festivals, i think he knows what the fuck he's doing. y'all need to shut up and enjoy the content that is still being produced from this "archaic" engine.
I've seen beautiful things made with MS Paint software. Not JUST MS Paint, but like... MS Paint from Windows 95 and earlier.
Now, think of it this way. Are you going to call the art shit, or the artist stupid just because they used something "archaic", and that there are way better, yet expensive as hell programs out there? Are you going to disregard something beautiful just because of the tools used to make it?
My point is, just because the tools used to make something are old and there are better (and possibly more expensive) things to use out there, doesn't mean you have a right to instantly shoot it down for that reason, especially if it's extremely good looking.
Besides, Source still has one of the best face-posing systems to date, that doesn't use facial motion capture.
Do they need Environment artist's? :D this sounds awesome tho
By the sound of it they gave these guys Source Filmmaker, I wonder how long until we see that publicly released.

I was just thinking about this today. A TF2 movie would be really awesome.
I wonder if valve time is contagious. We're gonna find out!
Would be nice to see SFM on something that's not Team Fortress 2.
The HL2 Mac teaser was SFM.
I could see it, considering how nice that DOTA 2 trailer looked

Even when doing scenes where you'd expect more realism, Source is still decent.
Well, the trailers aren't exactly realtime rendered and the software used to make them isn't released to the public, granted it is possible to get. But to be honest, as much as I used to love Source engine, it will need a big overhaul if it's to compete with the bigger engines such as Cry Engine and Unreal.

These are not good examples. Polies and ingame visuals everywhere. Not something I'd like to see in a "real" movie.

You know models are made out of polygons right?
Polygons are the triangles all 3d assets are composed of.

Durr, obiously not something they can fix by using higher-quality models not from a game.
I want to see a slapstick comedy made on Gamebryo.

Yeah no shit Sherlock. And live organisms are made out of cells.
