I find it funny that folks here are up in arms for this even when it doesn't come across as a rape joke to alot of people but people here were defending Gabe Newell when he used the word retarded as a joke.
Remember, you must constantly chcek yourself to see if you don't breach the ammount of privilege you're supposed to have, and if whatever you say is offensive to anyone or if anyone could take it as a rape joke for some odd reason, because everyone will do the same and will constantly monitor you for such despicable mysoginist activities that you will SURELY engage in, for you are full of privilege. (this is how facepunch sounds) [editline]11th June 2013[/editline] If you're a rapist maybe...
nice job but no cigar I'm saying that any person that isn't a socially retarded recluse would know better than to make a stupid joke that will probably offend someone.
This is definitely a rape joke guys. "Just let it happen" is a stereotypical rape line.
"Just let it happen. It'll be over soon" isn't a rape-specific phrase in any way. It's exactly what my parents would've told me if I was fussing about getting a vaccine as a kid.
Privilege is another thing that actually exists in the realm of sociology. It is not complicated. As a white wealthy straight person, one would have more opportunities in life, and jokes made about one's group and social class would be less likely to actually be seen as sort of true. Non-privileged people are constantly threatened by jokes about them because it could easily morph into truth about their lives and the way people still think about them. The term "check your privilege" essentially means to employ what sociologists call "sociological imagination", which is placing yourself in someone else's shoes. When I imagine what it is like to have the life of my friend, I have to imagine a life in which every rape joke reminds me of when I was raped. That adds perspective
Rape joke? That's barely a rape joke. On the other hand, they should've had two equal gamers playing. Not some good guy just showing off by beating on a girl who's obviously not an adept player.

You can't exactly expect everything that could possibly upset someone to be censored.
On the other hand, they should've had two equal gamers playing. They were so offended that they laughed. Non existent controversy.
They were so offended that they laughed. Non existent controversy.
Actually, if it was a rape joke, their laughter would be rather disturbing.
Except, this wasn't exactly a rape joke. It was a comment that a small group of people took to be a rape reference. You can't exactly expect everything that could possibly upset someone to be censored.
You're right, it was barely a joke at all. It was still hurtful to those that were hurt by it, like my friend. And I said that in my long post, that it would be very hard to create a society in which nothing people said triggered anybody. It is still worthwhile to limit where possible. I won't even discuss trying to limit it on an internet forum full of mainly white teenage males (I believe that statistics describes most of facepunch, 4chan, and reddit, though I COULD be wrong), but I believe that it is not wildly ambitious to not have to deal with these types of comments on a broadcast by a major corporation, at least. Maybe it is just that Microsoft knows their main audience.
If look at the words that were said entirely out of context it sounds bad. When you look at what is actually happening it is just questionably chosen trash talk.
Actually, if it was a rape joke, their laughter would be rather disturbing.
I feel as though it was weird that there was that much laugher, though I guess that is more a problem with my personal taste than anything political. I just found the comments to be weird and slightly creepy.

It was obviously scripted that she would lose first and then dominate later.
nice job but no cigar I'm saying that any person that isn't a socially retarded recluse would know better than to make a stupid joke that will probably offend someone.
Not everyone lives in a bubblewrapped world where people believe shouting words of bad things makes them happen or makes someone ill.
I feel as though it was weird that there was that much laugher, though I guess that is more a problem with my personal taste than anything political.
I wish we had a better video of it. The one in the OP freezes up, so we can't see what was going on. The laughter could have been from something else, like how over-the-top she was being beaten, but we can't see it.
If look at the words that were said entirely out of context it sounds bad. They just chose questionable things to say. What I always find more disturbing is terrible shit that commenters say to defend Microsoft against those who are complaining (very little of which I have found on Facepunch so far, thankfully). The guy said a few kinda weird comments that hurt a few people, but it was not intentional. The people defending the guy have said fair worse things.
"Just let it happen. It'll be over soon" isn't a rape-specific phrase in any way. It's exactly what my parents would've told me if I was fussing about getting a vaccine as a kid.
Raped by a needle!
it was a bad choice of words not a rape joke creating an issue over things like this is ridiculous and counter productive.
This is definitely a rape joke guys. "Just let it happen" is a stereotypical rape line.
I agree. Where did the term come from, if not justification of passivity to oppression? I've never heard it used in a way that did not hark back to "You can't possibly resist this terrible thing inflicted on you, so just let it happen to you".
Its over Xbox One cancelled.

My dentist said "It will be over soon" hurr rape joke
I'd say in bad taste. Personally I don't flip my shit though.

I thought it was hilarious. The outrage just shows what's wrong with the industry more so than the crap joke.

He is beating the shit out of her character, he only says it in a "The match will be over faster if you just stop trying to fight back" way but just because the term can also be used for a rape doesn't automatically make it a joke or reference to it. Personally I have heard it being used for people getting the shit beaten out of them much more than people being raped.

It is not completely intentional, most guys, and most women too, were socialized to be this way. Very few people actually actively try to promote rape culture. Maybe a few MRA people. The problem in our society is that you do not actually have to look very far or very deep to see how inherently misogynistic, classist, and racist, almost everything can be. I used to think it was an insanely difficult mental exercise to realize this, but that was simply because I have lived and still do live an extremely privileged life. Under the surface, and even under lots of good intentions (I do not think anyone here, even the people defending the comments made, is actually anti-feminist), there is a subconscious foundation of difference and discrimination in our society.

Rape is about power no? So holding power over another person in any condition is bad? Or is saying something about it bad? or is it wrong to play a video game and take it not seriously and say unserious things? I'm really confused by your point of view. I see real justifications of rape everywhere and they sicken me. You're upset over this. That's ridiculous.
