Except you can change the fact that you're fat.
I can't change the fact that I'm 6'3 though :( Being taller = being heavier.
You charge for cargo based on weight, not volume. I see no reason to handle passengers differently; both affect the aircraft in the same way. Weight, not volume, affects fuel consumption and flight characteristics.
yeah but the problem with that is that it appears discriminatory. i'm not sure how one would supersede the height issue. i suppose you could base the increase in price upon a ratio of height to weight. it someone weighed 180 and was 6'0 and someone else weighed 150 and was 5'0 they would be charged the same, something like that. however, that doesn't account for the density of one's body mass, in that a short person may have a much higher ratio for their weight in spite of their size due to the fact that they are more muscular or something idk
Airlines have to make a profit, too. Anything they do doesn't and likely isn't related to customer 'care', but their own profits. They're doing this to reduce overall carriage weight, not to reduce how uncomfortable passengers are, and I think it's completely OK because the airlines are getting by quite badly.
The ratio could be weighted so that REALLY tall people don't have to pay exorbitant prices, but the few dollars more on your end will help the airline prosper in the future.
I can't change the fact that I'm 6'3 though :( Being taller = being heavier.
I'm 6'2 and 145lb, it's not that hard to stay in-weight at this height.
I can't change the fact that I'm 6'3 though :( Being taller = being heavier.
My height is 1.8m and I only weight 55kg. Not all tall people are heavy. In fact, if you are tall, you are most likely to be underweight. Tall and fat is a very rare case. Tall and buff muscular is a rare for men. Though if you were to take a look at the WWE wrestler, the great Khali, he is a monster of a man in terms of height and weight.
Its never been an issue up until now, overweight people are nothing new. I think it is just another reason to charge more money. Though i expect a lot of people coming in saying "good", "give them a reason not to be fat lol" and other stupid sayings. We might as well just charge for other arbitrary things like eye color, skin color, height, etc while we're at it. Because it is totally okay to discriminate against people and charge them more. It isn't enough that airliners actually decreased leg-space and room to fit more chairs so they can get more people on one flight, it isn't enough that they cut out many complementary services, it isn't enough that they've added many charges that quickly add up. It is pretty asinine really.
thing is, they have an argument other than 'lol ur fat' which is: more weight = more fuel = more cost for them im not sure on this issue any physic or aviation expert wanna speak here
Airlines need the money to buy the fuel. No fuel = no transport. Unless somebody make a fuel efficient airplane, people are still going to charge your weight
thing is, they have an argument other than 'lol ur fat' which is: more weight = more fuel = more cost for them im not sure on this issue any physic or aviation expert wanna speak here
Yes I already spoke but I can shorten it for you; fuel consumption increases exponentially as weight increases at a fixed rate. A lot of very heavy passengers can actually overload even a large aircraft and render it unable to clear the runway in time.

It costs the airline just as much to fly them. Really a pay-by-weight system makes the most sense. You're paying for each pound of payload you're reserving for your use, be it your body or your luggage. As for discrimination... is it discrimination when X-Large shirts cost more than S shirts? Is it discrimination when a meal appropriate for a 300lb person costs more than a meal for a 150lb person? Of course not. The tailor needs more material to make a bigger shirt, so it costs more. The restaurant needs more food for a bigger meal, so it costs more. So why is it discrimination if a company needs more fuel to lift a heavier person, so the ticket costs more?
It would be even worse if they charged by BMI. BMI is basically bullshit, but as indirectly discussed in this thread, it is evident most of you get that weight =/= fat. But the airlines don't give a shit if you are unhealthily fat. Posts in this thread, and the article itself states that it's all about maintaining a safe plane weight and fuel costs.
If you are 4'10" and 230 pounds (god help us) you should pay the same price as someone 6'3" and 230 pounds. It's not really fair but neither is the position the airlines are in right now since historically they've been one of the least evil industries. Once fuel prices stabilize I'm sure the weight taxes will be removed and ticket prices will be fixed again.
Except you can change the fact that you're fat.
This nonsensical notion needs to go away. Fat =/= weight. I can weigh 300 pounds, but look like a tank. I could also weigh 300 pounds and look like a jumbo jet.
We might as well just charge for other arbitrary things like eye color, skin color, height, etc while we're at it.
What if I'm Herculean as fuck? I'll still get charged
Stop lifting 6 months before a vacation. Dosh will be saved.
Do you not understand basic physics? It takes more fuel to lift more weight. If you have a ton of fat people on a plane it's going to be more expensive for the airline than if you were to have a bunch of skinny people. Charging by weight is perfectly reasonable on an airplane.
Not to mention a lardwhale is bound to take up two seats in width, but usually whine and throw a shitfit if they're charged as such. Now it's by weight, so they can suck it.
Yes let's cheer on yet another excuse from airlines to tack on extra fees, because everyone knows they've all basically been running a charity lately and making no money whatsoever [editline]1st April 2013[/editline] Facepunch likes it because they all weigh 110 pounds and it means they'll fly cheaper
Facepunch is a quantum system. Fat neckbeards and skinny fucks - whatever the argument demands.
Yes let's cheer on yet another excuse from airlines to tack on extra fees, because everyone knows they've all basically been running a charity lately and making no money whatsoever
Airlines enacting this policy basically makes fat people subsidize thin people.
What if I'm Herculean as fuck? I'll still get charged
Then you're still affecting the fuel consumption of the plane, ie getting charged more.
samoa air lol
Seems reasonable to me. Greedy cunts = Pay More
At least it will give an incentive to lose weight. If you had a thousand Samoans collectively lose a metric ton, that's going to help reduce fuel costs for airlines, and in turn, costs for passengers.

Okay well, it might have been an issue for a long time where some passenger(s) have had an uncomfortable flight due to an overweight passenger sitting next to them, but still NEVER have planes fallen from the sky due to heavy-weight passengers.

It's not to do with planes falling out of the sky. It's to do with it costing the airline more to fly heavy people, which in turn is costing EVERYONE more to fly.

Hey Facepunch here's a fun way for you to look at this: it's a surcharge for being male.
It costs more to get more weight in the air?
