I don't think the quality of lego has really declined, I think it's the creativity.
It's mostly just all licensed movies/games etc being turned into lego sets now. There's not as much of the things like the lego train sets, the medieval sets, the adventurer sets, the alien sets, etc. There used to be more parts that were fun and easy to create new and interesting combinations with.
I still like Lego and they have a charming approach to 3rd party IPs.
However, FUCK THEM FOR GETTING RID OF THE BIONICLE LINE!
Honestly I don't like Lego's approach the past few years. They have such a hard on for licensed themes, which goes against Lego's philosophy in my honest opinion. Most of these sets have proprietary and unique pieces that pretty much just go with that set, which makes it hard build it another way. Their current idea seems to be "build the set according to the instructions and be done with it"
They have at least gone away from the sets that have specialised parts just for that particular set.
I think they're doing well. An old toy manufacturer that has a lot to compete with nowadays.
I only managed to collect 3 full themes. All the sets from Rock Raiders and Arctic Explorers. Basically I did a lot of mining with polar bears when I was young :D
did anyone play the rock raiders game?
my childhood, right there.
lol my parents would go into costco or some big warehouse retailer and get the massive bulk boxes of random lego parts. who needs expensive as fuck set pieces.
As a kid I never got those expensive Lego sets like most kids, just the basic block boxes. And even still that's all I needed because I had a blast building random shit, I eventually ended up with enough to fill up one of those big plastic bins, but sadly they got thrown out many years back. Good times.

There is still all that stuff, and there's way more useful generic and special pieces than there used to be. Besides, old sets always had specific pieces, you are just imagining that they didn't. I don't even get that argument anyway, I mean you buy a train and it's gunna have train pieces, no shit sherlock. If it was made up of 2x4 bricks it would be stupid.
My mom never bought me Legos because she thought I would eat and choke on them.
:(

What I want, is a return of Lego RACERS, and I think the original bionicle.
Has anyone bothered to look at the links I provided where Creativity and LEGO come together?
There's not as much of the things like the lego train sets, the medieval sets, the adventurer sets, the alien sets, etc.
What.
That's categorically false. Castle and Space have been consistently running with updated subthemes without fail, train is still ongoing, and adventurer was a subtheme that was dropped after a few years, but thematically continued in the Indiana Jones and Pharaoh Quest lines.
Also I don't care what anyone says about "specialised pieces" because pieces 57909 and 57910(/92013) that were introduced in exo-force are the best pieces ever.
Specialized parts my brick separator. From what I read, that problem was actually in our nostalgic 90's period. I treasure Rock Raiders like many of you, but if you look at the parts they used, most of their unique ones haven't been used in sets since. I believe that's textbook specialty parts there. Power MIners (new mining line that came out in 2008) has more unique parts that you can use elsewhere (look beyond the minifigures, and you can see).
A few parts here and there besides, even the licensed sets are in the same general quality. I'm looking at this Pirates of the Caribbean set I got at Goodwill a few weeks back:

The only specialized parts I can see are Miniifigs and some of the wall panels. Everything else, I could put to use in Castle/Fancy bank walls, ornaments in a house interior, wood flooring in an old house, seaweed for an undersea floor, and grooved walls for ancient ruins.

Lego was a great source of creativity for me as a child. Which is true for a lot of children. Sadly this is true and it limits how creative you can be with lego.
My cousin who is like 6-7 years old. He just whines at people until they build it for him and then is done with it.
I used to spend ages at his age building stuff and if I wasn't making something brand new I at least followed the instructions myself for lego technics and stuff.
Lego has definitely declined in quality. All the sets use like a bazillion specialty peices, and in most cases the sets are pretty sucky. Lego star wars sets, fucking toy story sets, harry potter sets, it just feels eh now. I'd probably have more fun building something out of the giant fucking box of lego I have than going out and spending 50 bucks on a new set.
Problem is, Lego can't make money if they don't do all the license stuff. The "decline in quality" you're talking about is mostly a response to what the market wants. And what the market wants out of Lego is inherently what today's kids want - and that is kits that are easy and quick to build. The specialty pieces are there because kids can't be arsed to build that slope or wing or whatever out of 50 pieces, they want one solid block so they can be done with it. Attention span and creativity has been on the decline for a long time.

Alright, all specialty pieces are obviously not evil. What I'm talking about is stuff like this:

That's almost an entire plane, in one block. What's the point?

That's for stability. It looks much nicer than a rough edged plane made out if squares. With the main body, I could imagine doing a lot with that but of course it would still have to bee a plane or a boat, or a train..
I'm already thinking of a lot so maybe you're just not applying your imagination enough?
Having said that, I would need to see how it goes together of course.

Those are the largest pieces in that set. Everything else you see are parts reaching from tiny to barely bigger than my hand.

Yeah!

One block!
Alright, point taken, maybe I' being overly pessimistic. Though I disagree that the smooth shape looks nicer than a blocky one. That's part of the charm with Lego for me.

To each their own. The old blocky look is great for certain LEGO models, I agree (like houses). Sometimes though, I like seeing my models go an extra mile towards looking realistic.
I followed the instructions and left it that way

I still do that.
At least, I started again when the whole LOTR and the Hobbit sets came out.

That same "brick" came with a helicopter set I have

The set is pretty great too. it even comes with a classic shark aww yeah.
LEGO is getting better, not worse. Brick per brick, prices are lowering significantly, and while sets may be licensed third party, LEGO does still have a plethora of in-house sets of very good quality. The licensed sets are all still really good quality and nearly every piece can be interchangeably used in any other construction.
I recently purchased all of the LEGO LotR sets (it was my wet dream as a kid to have LEGO LotR and I'd be damned if I didn't buy them all now that I have a steady source of income) and I don't recall any unique pieces that couldn't be used individually or with other sets. The only piece I saw that may be difficult to use would be Shelob's torso pieces, but even then, imagination can carry that far.
I think people just look at LEGO through rose-tinted nostalgia glasses and see every third-party set as another sign that LEGO is selling out. Sure, they're trying to make money, they always have been, they're a toy company and they were extortionately expensive even in the 90s, but they are by no means getting worse. Third party means a variety of new pieces, new minifigures, new themes beyond simply "knights" or "cowboys," (now we can actually have a variety of medieval fantasy builds with the accessories to match) and the general quality of the pieces is just as good as ever.

ugh, the colors..
I got drawers full of legos beside my desk, I pull them out and play with them when games are loading and stuff. They will always have a special place in my heart. Whenever I go to a store that has legos I go look at what they have, and wish that they had these sets 10 years ago when I actually played with legos.

They ended Bionicle?
WHAT THE FUCK?!
They ended Bionicle?

They ended it because there was no way they could continue its story after a decade.
Besides, they replaced it with something virtually identical anyway.

It's from Power Miners, a sorta spiritual successor to Rock Raiders.

That is fucking child abuse.
I just hate how expensive Lego has gotten.
