• FBI cracks down on laser attacks

Human eyes are much more sensitive to green light than for example red.
A federal judge ordered 26-year-old Sergio Rodriguez to spend the next 14 years in prison Monday for “lasing” a police helicopter as a national crackdown on people who point lasers at aircraft intensifies.
Anyone else think that's a bit of a cruel punishment? Pretty sure you could rape and murder someone and get off with less.
Human eyes are much more sensitive to green light than for example red.
What's the source on this? I always heard human eye evolved to be very sensitive to red, as it's the color of blood. If it's more sensitive to green I'd be curious to know why.
no i am not, this wont blind a pilot.
Why blind when you can send them up in a burst of flames?

This is why: http://physics.stackexchange.com/questions/41624/why-do-green-lasers-appear-brighter-and-stronger-than-red-and-blue-lasers
Question... Can lasers actually cause planes and helicopters to lose control? If you think about it, the angle of attack would have to be JUST right to enter the cockpit, let alone get in a pilots eye(s). Helicopters I can see being more likely as they often have glass everything to maximize visuals.
It doesn´t matter if the beam is red, green or blue. What matters is how much energy it delivers.
a 5mw green laser will be brighter than a 5mw red laser [editline]4th June 2014[/editline] Also I can see this being easily abused, like imagine if someone knows how to handle a laser and isn't stupid, and then some asshole just reports him for aiming it at planes, how are you going to investigate this?
People are innocent until proven guilty.
Other way around, pal. Besides, it doesn't matter whether or not it was accidental, the accused party would still be in serious trouble for endangering the lives of potentially hundreds of people.

In this case, say the helicopter crashes - it's bound to crash somewhere and that can be pretty devastating. Doesn't help that it's a police helicopter either
There is a special kinda hell for people who use lasers on aircraft. I mean how is that fucking amusing at all and how fucking dull do you have to be to sit there all day and wait for planes to land and take off just to use a laser on them for a few minutes.
My 100mW 405nm (violet) laser seems a lot less bright than the cheapo $10 green lasers from amazon though...
Human eyes aren't very sensitive to that part of the spectrum. That's why the green laser seems brighter than a violet one (apart from the fact that a violet laser has less intensity than a green one at the same power output). Green lasers also often start with infra-red light that, when not filtered out properly (as is often the case in cheap ones), can damage eyes very easily due to its intensity. You can usually check this with a phone camera, if it appears white and doesn't max out the sensor then it's not filtered (but a green appearance is no guarantee it is). Still, both are dangerous. The coherent light means a lot more energy can be in the target than normally. [editline]4th June 2014[/editline] Late, but at least I have additional info :v:
The beam has widened to a huge size by the time it reaches the plane.
No it hasn't. The glass in cockpits has been sanded by stuff of off runways, bugs, etc. causing the beam to reflect into itself, causing the light to be intensified by the constant reflection.
That's both idiotic and impracticable.
You're the last person to call something idiotic
[thumb]http://www.laserpointersafety.com/resources/FAA-photo-laser3-highest-res-1936x1296.jpg[/thumb]
Thats actually a pretty cool looking picture. Nonetheless, this is a super stupid thing to do; these are the kinds of tards that jerk their bodies towards oncoming cars as if they're about to jump in front of them.
Yeah, I bet they think it's real funny until they catch one of them trying to land and end up with something like this happening to them
One of my favorite arrest videos. Some say it was a police helicopter, and others say it was an Apache. I don't really know which it is, but the police were quick
I'd just like to warn everyone to not read the comments.
Fuck you inverse psychology
Flying in to Bali you get people shining lasers at the planes and it sucks when one hits you in the eye. Sadly the Indonesian government won't do anything about it because you can bribe them with 30,000 rupia ($3) and get away with nearly anything.
I'd just like to warn everyone to not read the comments.
But they're comedy gold!
The media are wind-up assclowns. There is no higher power than us. We are the most powerful beings in the universe, if we just admit it. I dropped out of college at age 16 to go to work in the science field, fixing tvs and

People who do this are often arrested already, because of how easy it is to pinpoint their location.
Good thing anyone doing this has gotta be dumb as fuck or they wouldn't do it from their home and wouldn't do it for long before getting the hell out of there.
Green laser pointers are powerful as fuck, I was on holiday in Spain, bought one for myself. You could see the damn thing on the clouds at night, can't imagine being in an aircraft with some moron pointing one at you.
