I don't understand how a strong economy and high life expectants leads to a happy country, all I see every day people looking averagely sad and a shit tonne of crime that the government can't be fucked dealing with. I'd be alot more happy if there was at least one day where trains weren't late or don't have problems, I wasn't paranoid everytime I go to the trainstation and I'd be super duper happy if things weren't so damn expensive.
I take it you live in a city? I think places like those are just naturally depressing. Small towns are where it's at.
I dislike the city. The outer areas in Australia are best.
yeah sure is happy if you're an australian born to an australian who was born to an australian who went to australia on a boat from britain but australia's nationalism makes Alabama look like a friendly place to visit.
My uncle lives in Australia - For whatever reason, they still seem to have some sort of simmering resentment towards the British. He wants to move to New Zealand because they're a bit friendlier there.
I take it you live in a city? I think places like those are just naturally depressing. Small towns are where it's at.
My dream is to have a small flat somewhere in a nice Brisbane suburb, sounds lame as fuck but i dont like the idea of big houses and tons of cash
Australia is honestly all you can ask for, good food, good people, good community spirit and everyone gets a fair go, what more could you ask for
er Aboriginals aren't recognised as people in our Constitution. It may not be as bad as it once was (they were first recognised as part of the flora and fauna of Australia), but it's still terrible. In fact, section 25 of our Constitution (which hasn't been used, but still) says that Aboriginals may be disqualified from voting in elections based on their race at any point. Section 51 allows the government to pass laws to the detriment or benefit of Aboriginal peoples. This has been used. The Racial Discrimination Act was most recently suspended in 2007 for the NT Intervention. Everyone doesn't get a fair go. Please don't put out the image that Australia is the lucky country for everyone.

A mate came to Australia from Scotland with his dad, who transferred from the RAF to the RAAF for whatever reason. Everyone loves him.
Australians don't have sex. Australians mate.

If you go on Twitter and watch the auspol hashtag you'd think that we live in a hell hole.
I'm not too happy about how many asians and arabs I see on a daily basis but it's not enough to spoil my day, until they start talking loudly in their weird languages that is. It's just really obnoxious when they know no one can understand them so they feel like they are free to shout on the bus. Go away
Well, didn't Australia ban sadness a while ago ?
what
No he's right, it's just Tony has been planning on abolishing the law and has been encouraging civil disobedience: [IMG_thumb]http://www.abc.net.au/reslib/201104/r744005_6113791.jpg[/IMG_thumb]
i wouldn't find Australia to be the happiest country when it comes to their politics atm and the amount of poor people i see is beyond assured levels, all they do in my town is get drunk and bludge all day. sure they may be happy but they are brain dead. they are only happy when the gov gives them free money which is always at the current time.
How long until soccer moms construe this to mean that expensive video games make people happy? Seriously though, I'm not surprised, Australia (or at least the populated part of it) is a really great place from what I've seen and heard of it.
they are only happy when the gov gives them free money which is always at the current time.
This idea seems to be everywhere; that the government is giving money away and it is wasted on people. It's not a waste, even if those people waste it. They spend it on whatever they want and the people they give it to spend it on whatever they want. The economy is stimulated, the governments money is spent as required. Do you want these people to stop being happy? They're still valuable, why make them sad?
I see a lot of stuff about how Australia is an extremely racist country, and it seems like it's turning into a bit of a stereotype. Around the big cities especially there is hardly any racism. We have a very large Asian population and everyone gets along fairly well. Every so often there's an extreme case where some toothless bogan has a bit of a rant in a train or something and it makes national news, but really, shit like that happens in a lot of countries. It's especially prominent because of the taboo of talking about racism when it's directed towards white people. The treatment of Aborigines is another story, but it certainly shouldn't automatically classify everybody here racist.

Casual racism is massive in Australia. And what you see in the news is nothing compared to how often it occurs. Don't kid yourself, Australia is a racist country.

It's a problem in so far as much as racism is a problem anywhere, and in certain areas there are fears relating to employment etc which need to be addressed - same as anywhere. But Australia should not be defined as a racist country because it simply isn't

Imagine a primary school natural sciences textbook describing the fauna and flora: Here are the red kangaroo, this is the spotted quoll, and here are the Aboriginals..

However most other countries could possibly be more racist than that. I couldn't find the numbers in an original report though. Do you count racist jokes as racism? The only people I would not be comfortable telling a "mild" racist joke to are family members, otherwise all my Australian friends would receive it in good humour. Is that racist to you? It is to me.
fuck you Australia, you drunken bunch of immigrants. although im glad it wasn't a Scandinavian country, smug bastards they are. I hate danish bread.
I try not to be a misanthrope and keep things in perspective but not everyone is happy, I come from a part of town that is a dumping ground for the "problem people". Your view tends to be skewed toward the opposite of Sunbeams and Unicorns. Particularly so if you don't live on the East Coast, lots of sunshine and unicorns there.

I know plenty of people that tell racist jokes but at the end of the day they'll fight for their rights. Goes with the whole laxed nature of most Australians. Only real racism I see is from brain-dead bogans (They exist everywhere) and that towards some aboriginals (even then, it's not just towards Aboriginals, it's towards the bludgers that sit in parks all day drinking, of any race) I agree that we need to seriously repay the aboriginals, but to call Australia a racist country because we make jokes? That's ridiculous. We call eachother cunt a lot too, does that mean we're an angry country?
I agree. Check out this evidence.
This doesn't compensate for the fact that the wildlife there is batshit scary, though :v:
