People just love taking a look at the vocal minority and just running with it
It isn't that. It's the flippant attitude to less over forms of racism. I know while growing up that the idea of a drunken, petrol sniffing indigenous Australian was the norm. Lots of my friends who lived in upper-middle class pockets would be scared to go near the flats because black kids live there. Ditto for suburbs like Richmond due to it being an Asian enclave.
And there doesn't need to be a vocal minority shouting epithets on a bus when there's a majority silently accepting that its government would make Australia the only country in the world not to allow migrants safe passage onto our lands by extending the marine buffer. Or not decrying a leader who would send asylum seekers to a country that was not a signatory to the UN Human Rights charter. Or by continuing to make an Islamophobic dipshit the most-read columnist (formerly journalist until everyone realised he was full of shit) in the country. Or by allowing its First People to have a life expectancy 9.7/11.5 years shorter than their non-indigenous counterparts.
Just because no one says nigger or chink in front of you anymore, doesn't mean there isn't widespread racism that effects real people in horrible ways.
The whole racist thing can also depend on the suburb. Giving Perth an an example, some suburbs can be extremely racist, namely Gosnells, Armadale, Rockingham, Forrestfield. Other suburbs like Shelly, Perth, East Perth, Subiaco, North Beach, Hillarys aren't as racist.
Being happy, I would say that is true, mainly due to our wages being ridiculously high in comparison to other countries. As said earlier before "Most Australians I know seem rich", this might be more, we are rich in other countries, but not our own.
Racism isn't very common in my city, which is about four hours north of Perth.
But I've been to Perth and can agree some suburbs, especially Rockingham, are
I feel bad for finding this hillarious. Imagine a primary school natural sciences textbook describing the fauna and flora:
Here are the red kangaroo, this is the spotted quoll, and here are the Aboriginals..
Kudos for representing the Quoll. Good stuff.
I found a children's book at a country book fair a few weeks back. At best guess it was from the early 1960s. It was about the "Aboriginies" and basically started off by telling the reader that they were primitive and shouldn't be expected to ever do anything productive like the good colonial whitefella does because they had smaller brains. This was shortly before indigenous people were allowed to vote or have equal say under Australian law.
I love everyone in this country expect (black/white/ping/pong) for the people who stay poor. I earn around $500 a week working at a bottle shop (liquor store) till i find an "actual job" or career I want to pursue and I can afford to rent a 4 bedroom really nice house pay off my 2005 honda and pay any other bills while still enjoying every week and saving money.
This is one of the luckiest countries ever but half of the people who get a chance seem to make a conscious decision to be pieces of shit.
There is no racism apart from the odd joke or two in Ipswich, aboriginals mostly the older ones refer to you as a brother or mate even if you don't know them and they're really friendly and wise as well
I think most Australian's just have a sense of humour about this sort of thing, even people of other race. I know plenty of people that tell racist jokes but at the end of the day they'll fight for their rights. Goes with the whole laxed nature of most Australians.
I agree that it is a very Australian thing, but was the black face on Hey Hey It's Saturday racist? That was a "harmless" racist joke of the sort we talk about but was met with massive uproar in the US. (If you don't know what happened, some plastic surgeons did a Jackson 5 routine in blackface). Also, just because most of the people who make the jokes would fight for their rights doesn't mean the jokes don't make the racists feel more comfortable because all the non-racists laughed at their joke thus encouraging a racist atmosphere.

I'm not surprised to be honest. Life is pretty good here; we have decent primary and secondary education and healthcare (both public and private options as well), outside of the big cities real estate is also reasonable. Plenty of universities around and if you want to do a trade you have plenty of options through many apprenticeships and traineeships. Work is pretty good as well, when I was 17 I was getting $25 an hour doing unskilled labour in a plant (between jobs at the moment though). We also were the only major developed nation not affected by the global financial crisis. So yeah life has been pretty good, come to Straya cunts!
As someone about to enter the good ol' American minimum of $7.25, is this still a normal wage in Australia?

Minimum wage for a 17 year old $11.90 per hour if you are casual or $9.91 if working part time or full time.
A lot of jobs though can pay quite a bit more though.
I worked as a kitchen hand just washing dishes for a good $16 an hour
Only the real scummy crap jobs in Australia have min wage

What do you mean "pieces of shit"?
Someone who is poor could have had bad luck (auto plants closing, manufacture moving out of Australia being a topical example), fallen into drugs or alcohol, gone into debt, suffered injury or disability, suffered childhood trauma, etc.
Saying that half of the people in bad financial state are pieces of shit is real ignorant but well done on making $500 a week anyway I guess.
Welcome to Australia, a possum literally just slid down my tin roof and bodyslammed into my passionfruit tree right outside my window. Gave it a thumbs up, and it walked it off.
I do like my country you know, as much as I bitch about it.

I didn't say everyone and I didn't say it has anything to do with a financial state. It's the people who can afford clothes that are expensive but try to steal casks of wine from my work like the ones I had to deal with last week. They buy an $80 shirt to look good while they steal a $10 cask of wine. They gamble away their rent money or spend it on alcohol. It's really sad and makes me angry that people in this world suffer while these people are extremely lucky compared to them.
I view making $500 a week as a great thing and am very grateful for it. I have friends who earn 5 times that a week. But I'm very happy with what I'm doing because at the moment it's more than enough for me and more than what a lot of people on this earth will ever had.
I take it you live in a city? I think places like those are just naturally depressing. Small towns are where it's at.
I live in Melbourne myself (outer suburbs) and I find it anything but depressing. Sydney felt pretty depressing when I was there - it's very... I dunno, dark, gloomy, feels closed in. Melbourne has a very friendly atmosphere to it overall though and I really, really enjoy living here.
There's something about rural Australian towns that I can't stand. Maybe it's the extreme overuse of fucking corrugated iron or something, but something just phases me about little Australian towns.
Back in the UK I'd probably hold the opposite opinions. Cities aren't much fun and are kinda depressing, small towns are where it's at. Not lived there in years though, so I couldn't safely say to be honest.

???
No. London, Manchester and Birmingham are so much better to live in than fucking Bradford, Swansea, Bolton or Middlesborough. Cities in general in the UK are better.
I love living in Australia, but we do have out fair share of issues. Especially in rural community's.
Not sure how you guys can be so happy. Sure you don't have a Canadian winter but you do have giant spiders.

G'day from Australia.
i've found that us aussies love to whinge but in the end australia is basically one of the best countries to live in
We whinge but we don't really give a fuck about much. Australians are just hard to offend, we call each other cunt a s away of greeting. When you think about it, what other country does that?
It doesn't seem happy, most people are pissed with the government (at all levels, local, state and federal), but when it comes to lifestyles and easy access to pretty much anything (except if you're living in the rural areas), it's pretty good.
Naysayers just jealous that they don't get to ride kangaroos to work.
G'day cunts.
God save the queen

I meant town towns. I grew up in a town the size of the suburb I currently live in in Melbourne at the foot of a hill range, with forested areas all around. Was a great environment, a lot of places to explore. Felt much more fun than inner city Edinburgh.
