• Gabe Newell: "Piracy is basically a non-issue for our company."

The reason why Valve doesn't have problems with piracy is a simple concept. They put effort and content into their games. It's literally that simple. The price tag is always proportional to the game. I don't get why other game companies don't understand this. I have never been disappointed with any Valve game no matter how long it took. Steam has been a major success since it was released in 2003. I remember when I first downloaded it in 2004 and although I have nostalgia of the old WON system, I liked the whole system of Steam better. It literally makes piracy impossible while not fucking over legitimate users with DRM bullshit.
Money, money...MONEY!
Am I wrong or does Valve not make more money than most other gaming companies?
Hey Ubisoft! Take a look at this!
I'm going to pull out a random post from Facepunch that should be reposted:
Russia? Their biggest market? That's kinda hard to believe, I'm sure other countries buy more from Steam than russians....for example USA? The country Valve has it's HQ in?
The US is far too in love with playing Call of Duty™ on their Microsoft© Xbox™ 360 and buying Xbox™Live™ for an absolute steal at $40+.
I'd say a little too friendly with their own forum's communities. Never seen any valve employees or blogs talking about other forums.
Why would they.
Many gamers dont quite seem to understand that Valve has an absolutely AWESOME thing going for them in that they are privately held. Its really what allows them to innovate as much as they do compared to say, Activation, whose stockholders have no real interest in gaming and would rather see another CoD come out to rake in more money.
Yeah public companies suck for the consumer, even if those companies and churn out products faster and more often.
You must also remember that Valve has the ability to take these innovative freedoms because they do not rely on investors or any other interfering wankers when it comes to development and distribution
Russia? Their biggest market? That's kinda hard to believe, I'm sure other countries buy more from Steam than russians....for example USA?
Why can't other companies take his advice.
we'vegottohavemoney.wmv
Ubisoft, this is why Valve is getting all of my money.
and this is why i've never pirated a valve game
I hope valve stays as a private company, all the public stock market gaming companies are absolute twats.
Valve is fucking genius. By correctly balancing and arranging trading, the mann co store, and f2p, they have the same f2p game as other game companies, but much better outcome.
I'm glad when HL2 first came out I bought it, never even pirated a Valve game anytime afterwards. I bought it Retail, I also have a few other games retail also.
Never pirated a Valve game once, never will, VALVe is IMHO the thing that kept PC Gaming enjoyable for me. GabeN, please, have my money NOW.
His idea is great, but fuck sometimes I hate Steam. But this is mostly the fault of my shitty internet.
Steam: Creating DRM so good that people forget it's DRM.
Valve are the only company in the world that can consistently make me buy games that I didn't even know I wanted.
Steam: Creating DRM so good that people forget it's DRM.
While that maybe true, Valve still doesn't destroy quality of their games.
The last game I pirated was Portal. I fell so much in love with it that I decided to download steam and buy it legally. Ever since I buy all my games.
Quick get the mods! We have a dirty moral-less pirating fool here. [edit] It's a joke, mods ban regardless.
I bet because of all these fucking steal deals. Valve is making more money off older games than newer games.
Quick get the mods! We have a dirty moral-less pirating fool here.
not moral-less if he had since bought the product since it was so good.
Valve makes me hard.
And this is why Valve games are totally worth the money. My Steam library is stocked with Valve products because of this. Well, this, and the dual purpose of any Valve content being usable in Gmod. The better you make the pirate product look, the more people will flock to it. Also, Gabe, you claim to be against invasive DRM, but what is Steam but an always-on DRM system that constantly phones home to your servers and reports on users?
When will Half-life 3 be released? I don't know.
Stay classy Gabe. Seriously though, Valve and Gabe are really down to earth when it comes to everything. They know their user base and understand them. I've never seen Valve make a mistake that's completely a "fuck you" to the user base.
We usually think of ourselves as customer centric rather than production centric.
Well, no wonder Ep. 3 isn't getting worked on.
Russia? Their biggest market? That's kinda hard to believe, I'm sure other countries buy more from Steam than russians....for example USA? The country Valve has it's HQ in?
You sure you're not American? because you've got some pretty bad geography skills from what I'm seeing here Nice to see Valve's doing a good job and caring about the consumer. People can say whatever they want about Valve having a "monopoly" (which is bullshit anyway) with Steam but if there's any company I would ever trust with a monopoly it'd be Valve
Gabe Newell is like a family member to me, if something bad were to happen to him I would cry.
