Because other companies have stockholders to answer to.
brb investing in valve
I've bought 136 games from steam in 5 years and that's a lot of money so they have got to be doing something right
Valve is doing it right.
Valve and Gabe, can you get any more awesome?
People ask why other companies aren't doing what VALVe is doing, and people respond by saying "They want more money". That's not true. If you remember, Gabe and his team found a way to make way more money by making TF2 free than by charging for it, and having sales. My answer is the other companies are just idiots. :v:

Other companies employ strategies based on what they can profit of of, massively.
Valve: "woah we have so much money let's thank our customers and players with sales, free games and updates" Other companies: "woah we have so much money let's make even more"

They trust us, and it makes them so awesome.
It's funny because piracy does not make you lose money, bad sales strategy does. Look at ubi, their drm is a really bad decision and whoever thought otherwise needs to be fired on the spot.
The US is far too in love with playing Call of Duty™ on their Microsoft© Xbox™ 360 and buying Xbox™Live™ for an absolute steal at $40+.
After Bungie starts making games for the PC again, I can safely say that I'll no longer have a use for my xbox.
Because of that sale, I bought Company of Heroes for $4 instead of looking for the CD because it was easier for me than trying to find it :v:
Don't forget that valve is very customer centered. They are one of the only companies I see take risks based on customers word. Even though I could go out a pirate most of the games I've bought from them, I don't. Because they respect me as a customer and have earned the money I work for. Here's to hoping Game Newell, and VALVe prosper for many years to come.
Piracy is a non-issue for Valve because Gabe is the biggest pirate of them all
Steam: Creating DRM so good that people forget it's DRM.
That's because you get so much more than you lose with Steam. I love the fact that I can play my games no matter where I am. I'd rather get a game on steam than a game that's not on steam.a
Ah, Gabe. Please take my wallet. Sincerly, Me.
My only flaw with this review is this:
With Team Fortress 2 we have released a series of updates, over 150 since the game shipped in October of 2007. Steam gives us the ability to closely monitor customers' reactions to those changes. By making a series of small steps we have reached our current design, which includes a free to play model. The fact that we've been getting feedback from our customers all along the way made this a fairly easy decision. If we hadn't been able to monitor the reactions, it would have been terrifying.
Yeah that's why you guys are doing nothing but releasing promotions and hats; not actually increasing the game's replay value.

I can confirm this is true :v: I probably shouldn't be screaming this out loud but I actually discovered the HL series through someone who gave me not-so-legal copies of it people underestimate how convenient steam is
The reason why Valve doesn't have problems with piracy is a simple concept. They put effort and content into their games. It's literally that simple. The price tag is always proportional to the game. I don't get why other game companies don't understand this. I have never been disappointed with any Valve game no matter how long it took. Steam has been a major success since it was released in 2003. I remember when I first downloaded it in 2004 and although I have nostalgia of the old WON system, I liked the whole system of Steam better. It literally makes piracy impossible while not fucking over legitimate users with DRM bullshit.
Athough some games have that windows live bullshit as well and it's super annoying.
Steam is basically what made me stop pirating games completely. It's simply so convenient, and the sales are amazing. Also I have never downloaded a Valve game, ever, out of respect for the company.

Besides BF3. But even that's a stretch in my opinion.
What about the rigged HL2 pirate edition that valve put on torrent sites, and then proceeded to ban thousands of steam accounts :V
I hereby nominate gaben as Time Magazine Person of the Year.
Hahaha, oh wow, how much more awesome can valve get?
It literally makes piracy impossible while not fucking over legitimate users with DRM bullshit.
Pirating a steam game is for the most part exactly as difficult as pirating any other game. You can even get multiplayer working with smartsteam. Valve's DRM, in this case, is as simple as selling products that people want to buy.
What is this.... smartstream?
What is this.... smartstream?
PACsteam and such now go away.
Half-Life in many ways was a reactionary response to the trivialization of the experience of the first person genre. Many of us had fallen in love with videogames because of the phenomenological possibilities of the field, and felt like the industry was reducing the experiences to least common denominators rather than exploring those possibilities. Our hope was that building worlds and characters would be more compelling than building shooting galleries.
Can we have a response like that to the CoD/BF3 shooter craze? I mean, it's not that a new game like that doesn't take effort and work, I just want ...aaah... how do I put it, a game that is also fun to the devs. Not a 6 hour interactive movie, a game. A game that has a message but that is also aware of what it is: a game.
Oh Gabe, you make me happy once more
Gaben is a badass and one of the greatest guys around.
