Gabe Newell: "Piracy is basically a non-issue for our company."

Offering better service than the pirates is great. now offer better prices than them.
Now seriously though. The pricing on continental Europe is extortionate. It's 25% above normal retail prices. Why can't they just either switch back to $ or adjust the prices.
I love Valve. They've never done anything to make me unhappy.
They've sent me a Half-Life 2 poster signed by all the guys from the Half-Life Team, enabled my Steam account when someone was trying to access it (and got it locked) and always replied within 20 minutes to any Steam Tickets I've opened.
Valve is awesome.
it's more like bringing a cloning machine to a store and using it on a chocolate bar, then eating the cloned bar. No sales loss.
Uh... I don't think you quite understand cloning :v:
I don't even see steam as a DRM, your post reminded me that it actually is.
All of the stupid arguments about Offline mode is pretty laughable. It's like people pretend that it doesn't exist to be able to parallel it with Ubisofts DRM when it's not. Only slight downside is that it can only be installed to a single account so you'll have to either run it offline on multiple computers or have more accounts. But since you can just enable Offline mode that point is also useless.

I don't see how he doesn't.
I think I get what you're saying but it's nitpicking, there's not many English words that describe exact duplicating
Please don't post about having pirated a game or games even if you bought the game afterwards. We don't need to know this.
If I steal a bar of chocolate and I go back to the shop next day and buy another of the same bar because I enjoyed it so much, does that mean I didn't steal the first bar?

The rules say you shouldn't "openly declare" that you pirated.
actually a better analogy would be that you replicated a bar of chocolate at no cost to them, and enjoyed it so much that you went back the next day and paid for it
The day Gabe Newell dies is the day i fly to America to his funeral.

Which just sounds like monopoly abuse. "you must pay us royalty everytime you produce a cupcake"
Fine. I'm patenting the letters T and S. Pay the fuck up!
I disagree piracy is also a pricing problem for many people. No other piece of entertainment costs anywhere near that much money overall.
The day Gabe Newell dies is the day i fly to America to his funeral.
I would enter that exploitive corporate haven of a Theocratic state unless i was paid handsomely.
Ubisoft, this is why Valve is getting all of my money.
Exactly. If you actually make it convenient to buy your games, and don't treat your customers as pirates until proven otherwise, people will be less likely to pirate your games.

While it's annoying, I frequently see games cost less than in shops.

If they sold in $ oh god, I'd die.

Having a bad day, miss?
He's right. Pirates doing well? Do better than pirates.
Pretty much every game in the steam store is up for download in any warez site nowadays :v:
You can't stop cracking teams, you can't stop warez. You need to make a good distribution service so people will use it.

this is a very unfair ban. He wasn't encouraging at all!
The day Gabe Newell dies is the day i fly to America to his funeral.
It would be pretty weird to fly there for his funeral if he's not dead.

Possibly. Try Coolshop.dk and repeat that.
Having a bad day, miss?
I wouldn't have done that. It'll end up in 2-4 hours of idle chatter in Refugee camp ending in either their permaban or her having to unban them anyway due to vague ban reason/post context.
The last game I pirated was Portal. I fell so much in love with it that I decided to download steam and buy it legally. Ever since I buy all my games.

Don't know what's funnier, the fact you said that and are obviously lying or the fact he got banned for it.:v:
We have no quarrel with Valve
In fact, we Pirates support them
[sp]for god sake mods i mean real pirates please don't ban me[/sp]
I don't want the dude to grow old and retire. He rocks!

He's encouraging people to make better distribution platforms. And he stated a fact about pirates. Not ban worthy enough.
Rule #1 of pirateclub - Do not talk about pirating.
[sp]It was a fightclub reference, please don't ban me for saying the word pirate. Thnx mods.[/sp]
I don't see why some people in this thread are getting banned for not supporting or doing piracy while others state that they do (or did) piracy and they're not banned or anything
am I not getting something?

Rule #2 of Pirateclub - YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT PIRATECLUB
It's too bad you don't see companies like this outside of the software industry.
Valve's so good, people just forgot that hacking incident and thought "D'aww, I can't stay mad at you."
I haven't bought games, other software, movies, TV-series or music for 5 years.
It's about the money, and using it for something that I can't get for free in an hour or two, like food or rent.
It's true that Ubisoft DRM sucks balls, but who would buy that shit anyways when it works better cracked?
I'm proud to not waste cash on useless shit that just wastes my time, better to waste it for free :yarr:
It's a non issue because they don't make games they just delay them.
And when they get released, everybody flips shit over them being awesome.

Agreed.
I think we have found another bad moderator of facepunch.
