Point being that this isn't Holland. This is the US. And blackface in any form carries an extreme stigma that everyone should be aware of by this point. I'm sure there's some gris-gris in Holland that's fairly common elsewhere. But we aren't talking about Holland.
Well we were talking about the image with those guys. Which was not done for the US or in the US.
Well we were talking about the image with those guys. Which was not done for the US or in the US.
In a thread about blackface in the US with absolutely no context. One would assume it's relevant. [editline]22nd May 2012[/editline] also the fuck kind of wood are they burning for brown and red ash.
We dutchies transported a whole lot of them to the us, should we never allow a ship sailing under our flag to have a white crew + captain while they have black people among their passengers anymore? After all it's a pretty dark period of our history, what if someone feels offended by it
do they have different wood in the bumfuck cold parts of europe?

No, you should not sail a ship with thousands of people chained naked lying in their own feces, stacked atop one another like sardines. [editline]22nd May 2012[/editline] Do you think slave ships were fucking luxury cruises or something? See, this is the kind of disrespectful shit we're talking about. You don't even know the crime that was committed.
Why is there a huge controversy over such a non-issue? The kid made himself look like MLK. He was black. He made himself look black. He's in fucking second grade. Big deal.
If he didn't paint his face they'd complain he was being a racist for portraying MLK as a white man. Haha

Even though he's from a non us nation and even if any of his forefathers exploited black people it's a few centuries in the past?
ITT: People trying to hard
rating people you disagree with dumb really supports your case gj!

The majority holds no sway over the minority. The majority doesn't get to make the rules for the minority, and the abused minority gets to levy all the judgements it wants.
oh my god what the fuck zwartepiet is legitimately racist.
Also thanks for telling me the name of that. All this "they're covered in ashes" stuff was complete bullshit. That's blackface. The character of Black Peter is a black servant/slave, not some fucking Dutch dude covered in ash. The older versions of the holiday portray him as an incredibly inept, comic relief slave (FUCKING VAUDEVILLE). Judging by this I guess santa's elves are all african slaves in this particular mythos. And the white Dutch dudes are all uppity about having their racism questioned.
no they tried to cover that up by saying he just got soot on himself from falling down a chimney, which totally explains the afro hair. a dumb black dude who follows around a richly-clothed bearded white dude

And why not go further. Demonise Italians because Romans practiced dehumanising slavery for centuries. Or anyone who shares an ounce landowner blood because of what was done toserfs. Or all Germans because of Nazism. Also the majority can hold sway over a minority on interpersonal contact. Just as theminority can do the same. The majority cannot hold sway in non personal contact though. which is the sphere where protection is employed.
Point being that this isn't Holland. This is the US. And blackface in any form carries an extreme stigma that everyone should be aware of by this point.
Here's a question I'd like to ask. As we know, blackface is essentially just face paint that was used in the past by white people to make themselves into racist caricatures of black people. That's fair, and it was indeed wrong. But with that in mind, it's still just face paint with a sordid past. This of course leaves us with two options. Option A: We continue to culturally prohibit the use of black face paint for any reason, good or bad, because of the social stigma it represents. Option B: We accept that black face paint was used with racist intent in the past, but we also accept that it can be used in a respectful manner as well, such as what this kid was doing, and we can start distinguishing it on a case by case basis instead of just saying "No black face paint ever." Personally, I'm thinking Option B is the better of the two. Anyone else?
This of course leaves us with two options.
no that leaves us with a false dichotomy.

[editline]22nd May 2012[/editline] Ignoring the history of a symbol solves nothing: it perpetuates ignorance and allows the problem to persist. We do not ignore history simply because it is uncomfortable.
So, uh, has anyone brought up that we let equally terrible "blackface" equivalents of days past roam loose without anyone raising an eyebrow, because they're also no longer used in the old offensive manner?
Replace "face paint" with "noose" and re-read. [editline]22nd May 2012[/editline] Ignoring the history of a symbol solves nothing: it perpetuates ignorance and allows the problem to persist. We do not ignore history simply because it is uncomfortable.
Woah woah woah woah woah; where on EARTH did I say we should ignore the past? I'm completely certain that I said exactly the opposite of that. I think saying "A non-black person may never use makeup to look like a black person" seems more like allowing the problem to exist than my suggestion. I'm saying that we should accept the past, understand why it was wrong to use it in in that specific way, and start using it for ways that are right. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the act of using makeup to look like a black person, the problem is in the social stigma that we've attached to it. That stigma can change if we let it, and we can stop holding it up as a symbol of racism when, when we get right down to it, it's simply makeup.
Haha what? Right reason? What on earth are you talking about? You really believe that his blackface added much needed 'authenticity' to a second grade project? Would his presentation really have suffered without it? It was wholly unnecessary and you know it. Well you are certainly a self righteous one aren't you? If the kid and the kid's family apologized for being unintentionally offensive I wouldn't have an issue. The fact that they have the gall to demand an apology from the school shows that they, like you apparently, don't give a fuck what anyone else thinks, and that they're somehow entitled to being able to be offensive. See above.
Do I need to wear my PASGT helmet for a presentation on US Troops in Iraq? No, it's wholly unnecessary!
Do I need to wear my PASGT helmet for a presentation on US Troops in Iraq? No, it's wholly unnecessary!
not when you're eight you don't.
I bet if he dressed as Jefferson Davis nobody would have thought anything of it
I bet if he dressed as Jefferson Davis nobody would have thought anything of it
haha uhh in a presentation about american icons the fucking secessionist would probably draw some comments
what the fuck lankist you used to be cool it is not even blackface. it's a kid that drew a very fucking elaborate chart on MLKJ and obviously cared a good deal about what he was doing. fuck, the school told him to do it. draw a chart, dress up as him. I can completely understand the rage of the parents and the frustration of the kid. the parents possibly applied just enough paint for it not to be blackface, and all. it's a sad thing, that we're still at a point where we get stuck up on things like this. there is a saying that goes that those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it, but this is not one of those cases. this is almost zealotry, and in my opinion those that are ranting about how offensive this is to BLACKS and blacks and BLACKS BLACKS BLACKS are differentiating between people and I don't like that. [editline]23rd May 2012[/editline]
who's getting demonized again? it's just silly for a white dutch person to start telling black americans what they should feel about racism. if you think that's demonizing, try being black in the netherlands and seeing this: take it from me, a lot of black dutch people aren't big fans of that
now this, is a blackface, and disgusting
in my opinion those that are ranting about how offensive this is to BLACKS and blacks and BLACKS BLACKS BLACKS are differentiating between people and I don't like that.
well the important thing is that you've found a way to victimize yourself.
