Feminist conference says clapping ‘triggers anxiety,’ asks attendees to use ‘jazz hands’ instead

Modern feminism is triggering me
'Hi I'd like to go to your conference but I and several other people have PTSD triggered by noises like clapping and so believe it would be unwise to attend'
'Oh well why don't we just ask people not to clap, that way everyone can be included and surely fellow feminists will not be offended over being politely asked to use an alternative to clapping'
The end? I mean it's not like they're going and complaining after the fact that people were clapping at a conference.
Would it be ridiculous if a 4th of July barbeque for veterans politely asked people not to bring fireworks, because it could trigger the PTSD of some servicemen?
I have never heard of a case where clapping can trigger a PTSD episode. In fact, loud, droning noises can often bring a PTSD sufferer out of the lull before a PTSD episode occurs. See "grounding."
I know it can be variable, but out of all the potential causes in a conference I would give clapping the least credence.
Seriously is this actually the point we're getting to where we have to keep all sounds below a certain decibel level because someone might almost literally lose their shit?
See now you're doing this same thing again. I asked you why you 'don't want to live in a world where you can't even clap' because they're not trying to force it on anyone, and you said you're just exercising your right to comment on the situation. Now you're going back to lamenting the encroachment of radical feminism on your rights in public.
Nobody in the article is calling for an end to clapping, just for their conference. There's a huge difference between making a polite request for a conference you're running, versus demanding immediate changes in behavior from everyone else in the world to suit your problems. Asking people to do something else instead of clap for their own private event isn't really a big deal. I think it's dumb as fuck and I've never heard of PTSD being triggered by clapping, but getting mad over things that do not affect you in any way, is this a slow news day or what?

False equivalency, you can pretty easily avoid fireworks, loud noises in general much less so.
A and B might both be letters mate but they're not the same one.
Also I imagine the vets would have been intelligent enough to pick a 4th of July barbecue without a fireworks display, so they didn't put a damper on anyone else 4th of July, or at least I would if I was a vet with PTSD, I mean good heavens imagine asking people to accommodate for themselves in such a niche case, crazy.

Right, and these guys asked that people not clap at their convention
they arent fucking asking people to ban clapping everywhere or some shit
complaining about this would be like going to a veterans 4th of July party where it was specifically outlined that there would be no fireworks and getting pissy at the veterans because there arent any fireworks.
I was wondering now, how would a room full of people jazz handing sound like? is it like with sound that spiders do when they move their limbs?

the "jazz hands" thing is actually what is used in the deaf community in place of clapping
I went to a college with a huge population of deaf students (one of the national deaf technical schools) and I can tell you that it sounds like nothing.
"Trigger" is slowly getting part of my most hated words list.

They can do whatever they like and I can feel however I like about it, I never said they shouldn't do it mate, I said it was fucking retarded.
Honestly my biggest question is how these hypothetically offended people become offended by clapping, because if it is because of actual PTSD any fear-potentiated startles tend to be related to the event or stimuli that caused the PTSD itself, which is why gunshots and explosions set off veterans and not clapping hands or the jingling of keys.
So what, was everyone oppressed or raped by someone in the midst of a standing ovation?
I think if clapping triggers you then you should get a fucking psychiatrist and learn to get over it instead of attending events with a lot of people.
Shit like that is way to common and you cant baby proof that shit.
Shit like this just gets me fucking mad, these people are pathetic, they undermine people with actual issues with triggering.
Seriously fucking clapping? Its people wanting attention or some shit, I dont even know whats going through peoples heads when clapping is just too much for them and people all need to just stop and respect their problems.
This isn't very accepting of blind people.
How is a blind speaker supposed to see the jazz hands supporting their speech?

they jazz it soo hard he can feel the wind blowing from audience?
friendly reminder that people here WILL defend this - I don't know how, but someone will find a way
there'll be the usual suspects like starlight456 who dumb every post, but thats as much as I can predict
starlight456 is such a tool. he still goes through my post history and dumbs everything now and then because i disagreed with his awful opinions lmao
As someone who has anxiety, how the hell does clapping trigger it?
they may use it as an excuse it can happen, a large crowd clapping causes a loud ass noise and loud noises can sometimes trigger anxiety depending on the situation

it's obviously an excuse but in reality do you even know how much a psychiatrist costs? it's fucking expensive
*cough*
and then everyone was triggered

If all you're doing is commenting on how stupid the idea is, then why do you keep saying stuff like
I don't want to live in a world where I can't even clap because it offends and triggers people.

Seriously is this actually the point we're getting to where we have to keep all sounds below a certain decibel level because someone might almost literally lose their shit?
which is clearly implying that they're forcing it on everyone and you're being oppressed or something?
You can't complain about feminists forcing you to change your language and then, when its pointed out that they're only doing it for themselves, backpedal to 'oh I know it's just for them I'm just commenting on the idea'.
Note: this conference has a part where they claim gay men are taking black culture

Ya they are expensive and even decent ones can be hard as fuck to find, but if you are at the end of your ropes and getting triggered over shit like clapping that causes an anxiety attack then MAYBE you should put a therapist/psychiatrist on a list of priority.
I feel like a lot of these type of people(these attention craving excuse making idiots, not actual triggered people with real ptsd) dont ever bother to even try getting a therapist at the very least. I wouldnt be surprised if they did go either, heard shit they didnt want to hear, and never went back.
Im sure they probably stick to just hugboxes honestly, since it seems those are the only type of places that would respect this type of extremely petty bullshit.
But what if Jazz hands triggers someone?
What if someone had an incident after or at a jazz gig?
Anyway, this is stupid as fuck. I wait for the day you can't say hello to someone because they'r so sensitive, they might connect it to the most random thing ever and get triggered.
I hold some pretty god damn strong feminist values, pretty much all around.
This is still the stupidest fucking thing on multiple levels.
First: Everyone knows it's stupid, you're not helping your global image.
Second: This massively trivializes the experience of mentally ill people and makes them(and it sure would make me) feel like i'm worthless and stupid because people think i get upset at clapping.
I bet that somewhere, someone actually does have an anxiety attack from hearing clapping, but a lot of people replace the word "uncomfortable" with "anxiety" these days, and it really pisses me off. Anxiety, for example is being deathly afraid of a thing to the point of the desire to kill yourself instead of doing that thing.
Shit, most of the anxiety attacks i've actually had, i don't even know why they happened. I just started freaking the fuck out and being around anyone made me more terrified than i ever have been. Now, triggers are a real thing, and i certainly have a set of triggers myself, but here's the difference: my triggers send me into a near-catatonic state, reliving some of the worst parts of my life, but are pretty specific and almost never happen. You know what triggers dont do? They don't make me mildly uncomfortable.

I should get this as a title.
Or maybe it's because if they're willing to apply the logic there they may be willing to apply it elsewhere, or hey maybe it's both.
Give her the knife-hand instead.

i have it myself but nowhere do i ever feel the need to kill myself but i get into a position of wanting to hurt people around me because i am freaking the fuck out. Hyperventilating and rather severe uneasyness of my surroundings

no worries dude, i gave an example of what its like for me. Anxiety differs from person to person. Whats important is differentiating anxiety and discomfort.

true that i sometimes forget that it differs from person to person
Soon these extreme feminists are gonna get triggered by the very prescence of people...
Like seriously? Triggered by clapping? They might as well be triggered by footsteps or bretahing.
Dude I am triggered by breathing because the misogynist pigs breath.
People who trivialize actual triggers by making up stupid shit like this are disgusting. This whole tumblr feminism thing bastardizes and undermines actual feminism. I can't wait until the day it goes away.

But people need to know that clapping, shirts and men with spread legs can trigger people!

The amount of damage the type of idiots who use tumblr have done is ridiculous, they've turned feminism into a big joke to a lot of people.
