This sounds like a bad idea.
Once you get rid of it the queen is next and we eventually are reduced to a bunch of glue sniffers in a retarded building built by a man called Jerry for 800 billion pounds.
Or Boris.
But then who will sit there and do almost nothing of use?
But then who will sit there and do almost nothing of use?
Gordon Brown?
Or Boris.
That works too.
good job Britain, now I will gladly call you a democracy. There still needs to be something done about the royal power to disband parliament though.
Edit:
oh wow seems like the elected politicians over in Britain are even worse than here, I guess it might be a bad idea to remove them then.
Hereditary government positions are a joke. The concept of nobility has been pointless since feudalism was abandoned.
Oh, wonderful. Yet another move to destroy everything that ever put the Great in Britain. I hope that the British public is coming to the realisation that its government is intent on removing every vestige of what makes Britain a unique country.
ha, the funny thing is that the monarchy always makes me look down on your government. There's still some rich bitch that gets a shitload of money just for being born to the royal family.
wow like the senators and reps in the USA
At least the queen is a nice lady why do you have to be so mean
This is bad. In England, the House of Commons has almost unlimited power, due to the lack of codified constitution. They can reverse the devolution of Scotland, North Island and Wales, change our fundamental rights quite easily, since all this is just another piece of legislation, which can be changed at any point. The House of Lords can delay such actions, and although delaying might seem pointless, it's quite a good measure to make politicians rethink parts, or even the whole, legislation. It's not the most democratic of solutions, but it is a safeguard for potential government tyranny.
ITT Americans who want to see our heritage gone.
I wonder how they would react if I told them to tear down the Statue of Liberty? Oh well, I have a feeling I am about to find out.
Good riddance.

Also ITT Americans who think Britian has a dictating monarchy and it should all be dissolved to free us it's horrific reign, (watch that documentary V for Vendetta and you'll see how bad things are in this country)

Ugh, being a monarchy is not a part of our heritage. We're just a nation that is too fucking backwards to realise that Kings and Queens do not belong in the modern world.

You're comparing an archaic and undemocratic house of parliament with a statue, nice
By the way getting rid of the HoL =/= getting rid of the monarchy geniuses
The house of lords is populated by people who inherited their titles.
Not democratic at all.
To everyone saying "good":
It's really, really not. The House of Lords often end up blocking parliament's more idiotic/extreme proposals, and as such, are a pain in the backside for the current government. This strikes me as less of a "let's all be more democratic" move, and more a "let's get rid of this group who are in our way, and replace with our friends" move.
This. Unless there's no party system this will be an absolute fucking disaster, any legislation no matter how extreme will be steamrolled through parliament like there's no tomorrow.
This is very good news
The house of lords is populated by people who inherited their titles.

Wrong, since 1999 the house of Lords is only allowed to have 92 hereditary peers (out of over 700)
This. Unless there's no party system this will be an absolute fucking disaster, any legislation no matter how extreme will be steamrolled through parliament like there's no tomorrow.
Why can't a senate provide resistance to legislation?
For the people complaining about heredity titles, inbreeding will kill these people eventually anyways.
The Labour party - For when Stalin isn't enough. I do hate this bunch of tossers. I hope the unions go on strike.
Ugh, being a monarchy is not a part of our heritage. We're just a nation that is too fucking backwards to realise that Kings and Queens do not belong in the modern world.
Well we're lucky they don't do anything. An autocratic monarchy would not belong in the modern world sure, or even an 18th century world, but a figurehead family for the country is perfectly acceptable. This isn't Tsarist Russia in case you didn't notice.
The Senate of the United Kingdom sounds weird.
When you've been around for give or take a thousand years you tend to pick up a lot of weird-ass traditions.
The Senate of the United Kingdom sounds weird.
Sounds strangely like the Senate of the United States, which we all know is the best and most awesomely wise and not retarded political clusterfuck in the world.
Another piece of British tradition down the drain.
british traditions are shit
the more britain changes from the past, the better of a country it becomes
Oh look! The UK is emerging from the middle ages!
the british tradition of beating down working people
oh look what happened, Britain became a trash pile because people didn't want to work anymore

I think you're confusing us with France.
Anyway, the House of Lords actually worked okay. People in a privileged position making decision about the country, but NOT QUITE as poweful as the government.
Then 1997 rolled by, and everyone, including those that didn't vote for them, thought that Labour might do a good job. They were wrong. Gordon Brown collapses everyone's pensions plans, seels gold reserves at a fraction of the price etc.
The House of Lords was to be changed by Tony Blair as a house of elected officials (known at the time as Tony's cronies, as most of those elected would be Labour fundraisers etc.). however, halfway through this transition, with about 50% elected, Blair realised that if the Lords were elected and have the final casting vote as they had always done, they would also have the final say, making them more powerful than the government.
That's the state it's in today. Halfway. Still in a plan to dissolve it since 1997.
Gormless Brown and Tony Bliar broke it.
