Someone might shoot up the place with a salad
I was talking to someone in an American highschool who isn't allowed to bring his own lunch OR leave to get lunch, as both of those were deemed to be threats to the school['s profits]

you're shitting me
I'm guessing I'm the only one that actually liked my school's food.
A few years ago in Britain this guy called Jamie Oliver basically won a campaign to make government enforce better food rules into schools, so far its worked - I saw myself the move from junk food pizzas, sausage rolls, turkey twizzlers to more healthy 'real meal' options.
I do know a lot of schools have a horrible budget and that buying this government standard food is a way of saving cash.
Any time a school runs out of money it should be mandated that the salary of school board members be cut first (to a minimum amount equal to what teachers are making) to cover the costs
I guarantee schools would suddenly find themselves running much more efficiently
I'd rather eat fast food each day than eat the food from lunch at school.
If they're going to give us unhealthy food, they might as well put in a fast food restaurant. A dollar menu would be nice so you can get a burger that actually tastes good rather than a burger for $2.75 at school.
The food at my school makes you constipated, that shit needs to go.
My highschool actually had a full blown fast food outlet in it.
Needless to say it was still shit.
The only things that were remotely eatable was the massive cookie the size of your head.
It was actually good.
Everything else...
Well, lets just say i didn't eat at school. For 2.50, i could get some actual, delicious pizza from an independently owned restaurant a 4 minute walk away.
You know everyone is running around wondering why childhood obesity is becoming such a problem, I think the problem is pretty apparent now.
The bottom line has become more important than children's health it seems
Our chicken is literally bread with chicken flavoring.
It's disgusting to me, but some people like it.
But then again, some people still think it's real chicken.
It's quite depressing to see how badly the US govt prioritizes its school system. Staying focused in school is impossible without proper food, especially younger students are dependent on proper nutrition to last the whole day. Instead they get stuffed with sugar and saturated fats. It has other effects than impeding learning aswell; think about the general health situation in the US for example. Disturbing.
You can live two weeks on one loaf of bread? With no toppings? Holy shit, are you anorexic by any chance?
I never used to eat toppings on my bread in high school, and yes, a loaf lasted on average two weeks, I didn't lunch on Fridays because I started late or ended early quite often (always switched my schedules so my Fridays were short)
Now-a-days my lunch is 2 slices of bread with 1 slice of ham/whatever on it.
A loaf lasts more than two weeks, and 1 pack of meat lasts well over a week as well.
So yeah I could lunch for a month on a 10-15$ budget.

empty carbs
I'm kind of glad I went to a school so small it didn't have a lunchroom
All through high school I had either chemistry or physics after lunch and the teacher let us go get something over the lunch break and then eat it during class in the lab (as long as we weren't doing anything with chemicals)
My schools meals actually look pretty nice, it's all prepared on site, and looks edible. I don't bother with it, though, as £3.50 is too much for lunch, when I never want to eat that much. The meals are healthy, though I'd say the portions are more than you should eat.
Got to say, if they feed you that kind of food at schools, I feel kind of sorry for you.
My school hires a subcontractor for food, though, so that could be why it's high quality.
I remember my primary schools' "macaroni cheese" in 1997... if I recall correctly it actually had a slight green tint

Did they serve the infamous turkey twizzlers? Or were they after your time?

vegetables are green so green is healthy
We get to eat at restaurants for free, my school cover lunch expenses up to 55 SEK (~$8.25) a day. While that's a privilege I really enjoy, I still miss the food I had in primary school. It was more varied then, and you could take how much you wanted, so you were never still hungry after you've eaten, even if you had overslept and missed breakfast.
Oh,well,it's not the pizza and fries that are bad. It's the plastic that ONLY US uses to make ALL of their food.

The '90s was the height of turkey twizzlers!

what the hell is a turkey twizzler
At my school (in Canada) the school board decided to make the same decision. All the kids hate the food, at least we have pizza, but thats about the only real, less expensive option. But the pizza isnt shit, it's actually made their at the school, not frozen. It's a tough topic because healthy things are generally more expensive which kids don't want to pay for, (not every kid's parents give them money, like me, I have a job), but you don't want to give kids cheap unhealthy crap either... idk where I stand, I think that they need to teach kids self control about food at a younger age and let them make the decision.

The epitome of mystery meat.
We just make our own lunches in the morning and eat them at school. I don't see why american kids can't. Junk food is more expensive than four slices of bread anyway.
Lower class kids may not have the ability or the food to do this.

There used to be a very successful program that basically offered free cereal in the morning to schools with impoverished students. Grades jumped quickly due to students being more alert and less hungry during class time. It was cut. Why? Because morons.

My school actually offered this still out of their own pocket/donated money... of course my high schools so broke now they had to fire around 30 teachers and get rid of most electives...
