Relating to all the death penalty discussion going on this thread, I'm not for the penalty because I consider it to be torture (not the execution itself). There's also the consideration that it costs more money to give someone the death penalty than give them life in prison.

Comparatively, the chance that capital punishment kills an innocent person is dramatically higher.

Even the Russians have abolished it. Keeping the death penalty makes America look more barbaric and backwards than we need to. Why is this? This is because of the lengthy appeals process that people convicted by the death penalty have to go through. Each appeal is laden with taxpayer money to try to get them through faster. In fact, if the death penalty was given at a faster rate in California while keeping the fairness of the appeals process, it would cost the state $100,000,000 MORE than what they already pay. Nevermind how much the death penalty costs or is opposed, but imagine how the other people are affected. The media goes insane when there is a case where the death penalty could be applied. They interview relatives of not only the victims, but the criminals and cast them into the limelight for all to see. How would you like the reputation of the mother that gave birth to a criminal, or the father who raised him? The last person who was given the death penalty in CT, Michael Ross was arrested in [B]1984.[/B] And the only reason they finally gave it to him was because he literally [B]begged[/B] for it. Do you think his death, so prolonged gave any closure or reassurance to the families to the victims? Why would it? Their loved ones are still dead and all the news of the penalty being served out does is tear open old wounds that desperately try to heal. Mr. Petit is no lawyer. As much as he wishes the death penalty inflicted, he does not know what the road ahead will entail. It would be easier and for the betterment of [B]everyone[/B] if the death penalty was abolished.

I live in the next town, I'm not sure if he deserves it, and I KNOW it won't help anything, but he does deserve to pay for his crimes; what he did not only ruined the lives of the victims and their friends and family, but terrified the community and reduced quality of living in Cheshire.
