Virgin America's in-flight entertainment will run on Android
I used to always fly Southwest and obviously they don't have any IFEs (they offer free streaming to mobile devices instead), but since I switched over to Delta, I still haven't gotten on a flight with IFEs. American and United are even worse in that regard. Virgin America is really the only "American" carrier with good IFEs, but their flights are exceedingly rare as they mainly focus on cross-country long hauls. JetBlue also has them, but again, who flies JetBlue?
Plus, most US carriers are cheap, so... most of my Delta flights have been on oddball craft (I'm spoiled by SWA's 737 fleet, so getting tossed around MD-80/90s, A319s, and the occasional Dash 8 is interesting for plane geeks but gives off a real secondhand vibe).
Oh, I was counting the wifi streaming as a form of IFE as well. Still, I am a bit surprised that most American carriers don't really have it. Would've thought that of all the countries, the USA would.

Delta doesn't have wifi on a lot of flights, but even then, that's kind of a cop-out since if you're bringing your own device you probably have better shit to do with it than blow your battery on wifi streaming.
If Pan-Am were still around, you can bet they'd have it, but Americans are super cost-sensitive for air travel because it's not considered a luxury - to get anywhere, you just have to fly, and you have to do it a lot. Carriers keep their costs down big-time.
Honestly, I've never gotten the Southwest streaming to work, so whatever.
Honest question, and I don't mean anything by this, but why do you care about the experience? As long as you make it there with no hassle, what does it matter? I ask because I just recently flew across America, and I never once thought to myself anything even remotely along the lines of "This experience could have been better if X". The only thing I cared about was making it to my destination safely and timely.
I absolutely love long-haul flights and flying in general. Nobody likes being stuck in an oxygen tube in the air for 7-12 hours, so I guess me wanting to make the best experience is some sort of an auto-psychological defense to make me not hate flying.
Its a bit like driving for example, there's people who take driving as a routine commuting thing, then there's gearheads who can't help but to smile every time they get behind the wheel.
However I do find any short-haul lesser than 3 hour long flights to be very annoying. Mainly because they've become a routine for me.

I guess we're just very different in that regard. I've flown quite a bit over the past year, and each time, I was perfectly content to just load entertainment on my phone and use that each time I went off somewhere. I get the same way when I drive long distances. I put music on my phone, plug it into my radio, and set off. Oh well, regardless, thanks for explaining your opinion to me.
As someone who flys Virgin Atlantic every so often I can say their inflight entertainment system sucks massive balls, I hope they replace it with something better like this soon.

Don't forget the abysmally bad banner/logo they always have to make for shitty ROMs like this.
I loaded some podcasts and a few movies on my phone, and watched those on my flight across the United States. Is there any reason other people can't do that? And for those people, why does it matter if the OS on the entertainment is android? That's what I don't get. Is it desirable to want a premium feel to your entertainment device's OS? The part that I'm really stuck on is this:
I just don't understand why that is necessary. Why does it matter if you feel like you're using your tablet? As long as you can access your desired form of entertainment, I don't see how it would make any difference.
Phones and laptop batteries don't last for those long international flights, though in domestic ones I've started noticing power outlets which are pretty handy!
yet we're still being charged fuck tonnes for in-flight wifi and are banned from using electronic devices at certain points of the flight due to outdated pseudoscience
well i can understand on a low-cost carrier like ryanair/easyjet that the electronics might not even be shielded (there are a few stories about planes being patched up with duct tape even)

this post
i love you
Out of about a dozen or so flights, ive only seen 1 plane with an in board system. All it did was show a map and our location. You could insert your credit card and watch movies or make calls. It was called Delta Song but i believe it's been discontinued

Entertainment enough for a nerdebag like me :v:

In first class, maybe... but not in economy.
Too soon?
not funny at all because it's too obvious. Pretty much every time a plane is mentioned someone tells a 9/11 joke
In first class, maybe... but not in economy.
I liked it when you could plug your headphones into the armrests and listen to the radio chatter.
What I meant is there's only 1% of people who could actually afford this. This will probably be a really expensive plane ride and will most likely stay that way for a while.
Virgin works by offering affordable prices for everyone, it's their marketing idea. Elite flights are not their market piece.
Also you are the 1% too.

Had them in economy on a United flight across America. I travel a lot.
