Honestly, this makes me want to buy the game even more. With the shit these guys went through, they deserve the money.
ITT: Shitty boss, lets fuck up the employees by not buying a really good game
Reminds me of the Red Dead Redemption thing, where people said they'd not buy it, making it so the team did all that for nothing. Not the exact same situation, but still...
ITT: Shitty boss, lets fuck up the employees by not buying a really good game
Development is done, they've already got their pay directly related to LA Noire
Yeah but then you'd also be supporting the fuckface boss. Fuck I'm so undecided as to whether or not I should buy it. Goddamn it. [editline]25th June 2011[/editline]
Development is done, they've already got their pay directly related to LA Noire
Really? If this is true then scratch what I just said.
Purchases really only affect bonuses, but I'd still say these devs deserve their bonuses.
Purchases really only affect bonuses, but I'd still say these devs deserve their bonuses.
Plus, if I'd worked on this game and had a shitty time, I'd want it to be successful for all my hard work. But maybe that's just me...
Honestly, this makes me want to buy the game even more. With the shit these guys went through, they deserve the money.
Exactly. I Don't see the logic behind people saying they aren't going to buy it because of this; all that does is deny the game devs the sole reason why they stayed at their job: money. YOUR COMPANY ABUSED YOU AND YOU DIDN'T QUIT BECAUSE YOU NEED MONEY? WELLLLLLL THEN LOOKS LIKE I WON'T BE BUYING YOUR PRODUCT!
Really? If this is true then scratch what I just said.
Well they're likely developing something else but it's not like the company will shut down if LA Noire stops selling at this point
Purchases really only affect bonuses, but I'd still say these devs deserve their bonuses.
I hate to jump the gun here. But judging by the general trend we hear about salaries and "extra payments", There ain't no bonus coming at all.
Looks like its time to add Brendan McNamara to the list of "shitty video game directors". Hope he enjoys his new friends, George Broussard and John Romero!

Sure people want to support the poor guys. But how much are they getting in bonus? and how much is this McGoatmolester getting. It's obvious that he thinks he's running shit well and good. He isn't going to change and his next game will be just as cold, clinical and tough to produce. The "cattle" have already been paid, This is how you make a statement as a customer. Boycotts. Next you'll tell me that Quake 3 was a revelation. It was made under similar circumstances as DNF. Carmack was lead and he wasn't communicating with anyone. To make matters worse, Unreal Tournament CRUSHED quake 3 when it came to technology and content. so yeah. John Romero sucks!
John Romero was extremely cocky and arrogant. So when he games he worked on didn't live up to expectations then somehow it was somebody else to blame.
You can't be forced to do something outside the reasonable scope of your job duties. If that happens, report them to the labour board.
Some districts don't have a labour board to report to. You either do exactly what you're told or you're canned, and you can't do shit all about it.
I've heard at microsoft when Gates was still there he would be perfectly willing to cuss you out in front of your coworkers and fire you right there.
I've heard at microsoft when Gates was still there he would be perfectly willing to cuss you out in front of your coworkers and fire you right there.
Steve Jobs once gave Bobby Kotick a verbal beat down for making bullshit software. or something.

Would be amazing if all pros left the big companies and started doing some indie shit. And since they're pros, I doubt they would be getting any less salary anyway.
I've heard at microsoft when Gates was still there he would be perfectly willing to cuss you out in front of your coworkers and fire you right there.
bill gates was famous for being practically abusive when it came to employees

He hired "good" Quake 1 map developers as his initial map team, but never briefed them on things like how much different it is making maps as a job instead of a hobby, switched to the Quake 2 engine on a whim, which took about a year to fully convert all of the Quake 1-era work to the Q2 engine, insisted on implanting things there clearly weren't going to be working in any foreseeable future instead of scrapping them like any decent dev would've done (like the sidekicks and even minor shit like the a zombie's teleport ability), got surprised by a walk-out that anybody would've seen coming, let Ion Storm's upper management ream him in the ass by not fighting for funds for Daikatana and instead let Ion Storm "finish" Todd Porter's disaster of a RTS, Dominon: Storm Over Gift, never dealt with the antagonism between the level designers and the art team until long after it came to a head, helped produce the infamous "Romero's about to make you his bitch" ad, which tainted Ion Storm forever, hired art guys from comic book companies, but didn't bother to tell them they would be working with 256x256 canvases with a limited pallet instead of the usual advanced tools they used, and cycled through multiple dev teams because he never managed to give clear goals nor show any clear signs of progress until about the middle of 1999, which is way too fucking late for any game project, especially for something as big as Daikatana.
You can't be forced to do something outside the reasonable scope of your job duties.
Why? They don't get more money if you finish the game.
To be completely honest, I don't really give a shit about the workplace as long as their not getting whipped or something, and as long as the games are good. Good thing L.A. Noire was a great game.

I hope they don't fuck up Max Payne 3.. Couldn't care less about L.A. Noire though
It's funny cos this is like the only Australian AAA dev.

Wasn't there a similar pressure in the development of GTA IV? Seems like it happens a lot to Rockstar Games' developers. Team Bondi already lost a lot respect for me when I read on their website about job offers that said "You have to believe in the future of gaming, not in the past". I don't know what the future of gaming looks like to them (apart from more motion capturing) but to me it sounds like "Old games suck, casual games for 12 year olds rules!". Anyway, I always try to behave in a way that expresses my political views and in this case I don't know what to do. I wish it was possible to get the game and give the money to the developers, but it goes to Rockstar Games which will again fund a team with an asshole leader like that. In the end the game seems fine but it doesn't justify the weekend slavery, enthusiasm/career destruction and the verbal abuse. I had a female history teacher like that, I partially know what it feels like. When I read something like this, I always start deaming about establishing an independent game development studio. I would hire all the lost talents from Pandemic Studios, Free Radical Design, Westwood Studios, Team Bondi, Infinity Ward, Bizzare Creations, Outerlight, ...
They should apply to work for Valve, then their workdays will be filled with luxury.
