What I think is going on is that its a ground marking used to calibrate navigation systems. The lines could be a compass painted on the ground and they check that with what the nav stuff on the plane says to see if its accurate.

Each line on the thread image is 15 degrees, could be a more "accurate" rose. The white bars on the end of each line making the outer circle can be numbers stating the heading of the line. 15,30,45,60,75,90,105........ 360. all the way around
edit: That's not even on a runway. It's on a taxiway which is where they should be located anyways.

Great movie, but the book was better.
[sp]I was a little annoyed that there was only the one who went, where in the book more than one went. I loved the ending of the movie though. "I'm not concerned about the fact that it recorded nothing but static. I am concerned that it recorded 18 hours of static." That line just made me cry, as it shows they know something was up. I wish it would get a squeal, but I know it never will.[/sp]
