A handheld version wouldn't be much of a situation with proper batteries, seriously were not that far away from nanotech batteries with some HUGE energy densities. That and the recoil and the heat.

A totally silent electrical gun than launches chunks of iron, or a battery of massive electromagnets that propels solid blocks of iron and tungsten blocks through an armoured target like a hot knife through butter.
