So, is Linux a good alternative to Windows for a gaming computer now, or not for a good while yet? A friend of mine is saying it runs games and such perfectly, but i'm a little skeptical.
If all you play is source games(and some other already existing linux games), then it will be an acceptable alternative but just because valve is porting to linux doesnt mean all the other AAA games will do
I don't think I'd have the system resources to even run the client. Time to get excited for it.
I'm hoping to finally be able to use my laptop for some Steam chatting, having to use my phone is growing old fast

Yeah, the lack of group chat on mobile is a PITA too. :(
Uh, it will only be officially supported on Ubuntu when it launches but that doesn't mean it won't work on other distros, just that there might be problems.
and considering that allot of people will try Linux for the first time for Steam Linux testing they might as well go Ubuntu to minimize problems
As I said in the other thread, Portal was just had to the apps list for the Linux beta. So Linux users will get Portal free. :-)

Ubuntu is shit imo, Fedora is where its at. I demand Valve release rpm's on release date.
MY ARCH IS READY
I wish centos was on there or fedora, I really do not want to use jewbuntu
Other games with Linux builds include:
- Anything that was ever in a Humble Bundle
- any id game
- Unreal Tournament (UT99 through UT2k4)
- Unreal 1 (as a mod for UT99)
And that's just in the FPS category.
Also, if you're on not-Ubuntu and you want to install Steam, here's what you'll do:
1. Install dpkg (your distro's package manager may have it, Gentoo's Portage has it as app-arch/dpkg)
2. Download the Steam deb as normal
3. dpkg -i --force-depends steam.deb
4. Look at the list of packages it depends on, and make sure they're installed through your package manager. (You should be able to run Steam in a terminal and it will complain about a missing library)
5. Since for some reason developers like to link to specific versions of a library (so libssl.so.0.9.8 instead of libssl.so) you may have to make a symlink. You can stick it in /usr/lib and it won't harm anything but it's very unorganized.

You sure about that? I know thy use OpenGL for rendering but it doesnt mean they dont use other directX/Windows stuff elsewhere
Fuck many game developers haven't even made the effort to go to Mac yet what would make anyone think they'd jump the boat to linux?
It's not easy to port to Mac, considering you have to have a Mac, and you can't run Mac OS X in a VM.

Yeah, all the id games other than Rage have been on Linux.
What is CDR and what does it mean for the progress of the Linux client?
You called?
Yeah, all the id games other than Rage have been on Linux.
whoop forgot about Rage
still, if id keeps up the tradition of opensourcing their old engines it'll come soon enough.
Its time to...

Also ubuntu is fine if you get rid of unity.
Also ubuntu is fine if you get rid of unity.
I like Unity, the only thing really wrong with it is that it's a system hog.
Not so much on 12.04 and especially on 12.10 beta, at least to me.

Actually, you can run OS X in a VM, it's just that you need the OSX86 version (for VirtualBox, at least).
The next time I reinstall Windows, I'll do Windows 7 + Ubuntu dual-boot for sure. Just install MATE and it's a great distro.

Oh if only you knew.
I think i will stay with mint w/ cinnamon/mate

you do realize they're ubuntu based right.
you do realize they're ubuntu based right.
Shh, don't tell him, or hell just go "EWWW, Ubuntu Cooties!!"
I do realize linux mint is based on ubuntu, it's just that mint comes with some better things than ubuntu. Unity, for example. MATE comes by default, has a nice update manager, and all that things.

and it's a bit more light for me

Someone has never heard of the *buntu derivatives.
Well ok, i'm using ubuntu with another DE, could we move on?
And it bugs me a little that because i use mint, you guys assume I don't like ubuntu. It's just that I prefer mint over ubuntu.
