Now I can imagine the germans would have told him he'd end up in the camp no matter and was given the choice to guard it or to die in it. According to wikipedia Sobibor wasn't a concentration camp like Auschwitz where you would have to work until you died, but instead you'd probably die the same day you arrived. He was captured in 1942 so he couldn't choose to join the jews and hope that they'd be liberated. I'm pretty sure I'd go for the guard job rather than dying.

You may or may not get shot but considering the circumstances of the SS they weren't the kind of people you just said no to. And read your own damn line, they were transferred into the Waffen-SS and shipped off to the frontlines, that's certainly much better.

Judging by some of the first comments It sounds like they're being made by 10 year olds who play too much World at War and haven't had a real history lesson on what actually happened. I have a book called Night by Elie Wiesel, if you haven't read it you should its a really good book and you could learn exactly why the guards nor could the Jews who were in poisoned do shit to fight back.
