Um who killed themselves after writing a ironic song?
He shouldn't have handled that this way
that means a lot coming from a straight white male
Religious people =/= Homophobes.
No, because that's too all-inclusive, but Christian people do = homophobes. The Christian bible directly says homosexuals should be put to death...

Fundamentalists maybe, but not all Christians.
Fundamentalists maybe, but not all Christians.
No, all Christians
Leviticus 20:13:
If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.
If you don't believe in a part of your religious doctrine when it's clear and can not be mistaken for metaphor, I'm pretty sure that makes you a 'theist' and not a 'Christian'
Fundamentalists maybe, but not all Christians.
leviticus 20:13

Ah, yes this is correct.
I guess it doesn't get better :downsrim:
Well thanks for the false hope eric, i guess you're just as bad as religion now

I am a Christian. Christians take their lessons from Jesus' teachings. Jesus said that the one commandment that supersedes all that came before (all that old testament stuff people like to quote) is "Love thy neighbor." This is a teaching of unconditional love for all human beings. Jesus tried to reform Judaism. That means one must ignore the old teachings. Therefore, if you do not accept gays, you are not a true Christian.
So let's try not to spew more hate, please. The people you guys are talking about are people who are pretending they know what Jesus was trying to tell people and using God as an excuse to hate other people, which is disgusting. What was the entire point of The Good Samaritan story? It was that people who are different in a way you don't agree with are good people worthy of respect.
Christ didn't say to ignore the old teaching. He made it very clear to not do that at all.

It is also filled with countless hypocrisies that it refuses to address.
It is a collection of works by many people over hundreds of years.
The hateful passages were all written by hateful people, and the good passages by good people.
It is a wonderful book if you don't take every word of it literally. Too many people do, and spread hatred based on the words of the hateful people, while ignoring the words of the good.

As an Atheist I find the Bible a very interesting book to both read and study.

So good people write good things.
Hateful folks write hateful things.
You have no evidence supporting either party as being correct based on the bible alone.
When looking at the world, the violent hurtful place it is, one might be inclined to favor the darker interpretation. If I was a nice person, I wouldn't make massively different pressure systems collide and produce a cylinder of air that randomly wanders the countryside tearing everything to shit. Or cracks in the crust of the planet that randomly decide to spew molten rock everywhere. Or, you know, a cell in your body that accidentally loses its reproduction limiter and spreads exponentially until it kills you. These are all, objectively, moves of a complete dick.
I guess it doesn't get better, does it?
It really doesn't, the bullies just go from slinging childish insults to being your boss and making you work on saturday

That song wasn't ever written or performed by Bob Marley, he was dead even before this song existed, seriously
not if there's an afterlife
shit imagine all the religious people
Couldn't he only be at piece if there's an afterlife? If there's not he doesn't exist, thus he is only a memory now and cannot "be" period.
some of the comments are disgusting. one guy said that his suicide proved being gay is an illness. humanity makes me sick
Its good knowing that this thread has devolved into a bunch of teenagers whining over religion.
"You see?! Even with all his help he got from these pro-gay liberals he still committed suicide, watch all the liberals pull their hair out!"
-every rightwong nutjob right now
It gets even more sad if you believe in christian God.
He will be sent to hell for atleast two reasons: for being gay and for taking his own life.
Are you purposefully being an imbecile or what?
This is the saddest example of the saddest phenomenon in the modern world. The global epidemic of hatred and intolerance toward LBGT people crosses all religions and borders. We've over the last few years seen suicides, murders, and lynchings on nearly every continent related to this issue. If I'm not able to look on this as a thing of the past when I'm an old man I will die in a pit of sorrow.
It doesn't matter if we stop the hate for LGBT teenagers; the fundamentalists will always try to find one more minority that they can persecute and hate. I bet that when they realize that they'll get in more trouble than it's worth terrorizing gay people, they will switch to Asians or Mexicans as conflicts grow between these two countries.
It's definitely worth it to stop the hate, but people like these have lived throughout all of time specifically hating one population or another, and have systematically been told to shut up on every one. We should stop the violence for sure, especially now that it involves teenagers and younger kids that live with the people persecuting them.
So wait, did he just show us that it doesn't get better?
Before rating dumb, please post why it is dumb unless dumb rating cause i am being insensitive.
This guy is absolutely correct.
To be honest, this is massively hypocritical of the guy. The "it gets better" campaign is all about the fact that it really does get better, and by him committing suicide it literally undermines everything the campaign stands for.

I somehow doubt he was able to take that into account at the time.
poor soul, at least he'll have a bit of peace now.
Suicide and sodomy.
He's in double hell now.
Which actually looks like a progressive paradise so I suppose you're right.

if you are Christian you are the worst christian ever
The Bible is supposed to be the voice of God through man.
leviticus 20:13
if you don't follow the word of the bible you are not a christian
That's not completely true. For example here, I could openly go and discuss some certain part of the bible with a priest, and he would most probably disagree, but if asked if I am still a christian if I simply disagree with it but generally follow the rest, he wouldn't argue against it.
Thing is that a lot of stuff is left for rather broad interpretation, and sometimes even the priests disagree with each other, and I guess it varies from place to place, but I am pretty sure that by principle nobody can really "strip you of Christianity". Once you are baptized, the church can only excommunicate you, which means you aren't allowed to accept the sacraments and such, but nobody can state you aren't a Christian anymore, either.
Keep on mind that you are a christian even if you murder somebody, as long as you feel that way. Another thing is that there are many churches, like Catholics, Orthodox, Evangelical, etc, and all these are Christians, while often applying highly different ideology.
The only question is your own belief.

the fact of the matter is that it doesn't get better. I applaud this guy and others like him who try to (appear to) stay positive and spread an optimistic message, but in the end it's complete feel-good bullshit. I would go so far as to say these campaigns are offensive, because they marginalize the pain homosexuals go through by essentially equating it to bullying

Maybe god is like the chemist who just left the room quickly after the green bubbly stuff started oozing over the edge of the table and flowing down the hallway?
uhh it was like that when I got there, I swear
I quite like the idea of an incompetent god
