ITT: Jealousy and bandwagons.
Obvious patent lawsuits != jealousy This isn't kindergarden, you know. Companies don't get jealous :downs: Your comment makes even less sense if you look at the fact that Nokias phones were never made for the same consumers as the iphone
ITT means in this thread. Meaning the people who replied.

His list is terribly outdated. The iPhone does those things now, all of them. It's nice to know that Apple listens to complaints and fixes them at least.
It's not just durability but serviceability. If my iPod's battery shits out for good, I have to mail it in to get a new one installed, and the battery replacement costs more than what this damn thing's worth. I would much rather be able to go out, buy a new battery for like $30-50, go home and put the dumb thing in myself. Hell, I'd be willing to pay however much just for the tools to get this damn thing open so I can do just that.
Or you could just buy a 3 year warranty at Target for like 29 bucks and have it all done free. Or any other electronics store. Yes I wish they didn't solder the battery in but do you think the average consumer cares about that? [editline]07:45PM[/editline] Here the point at hand. Apple did a dick thing by copyrighting the multi-touch hardware that the iPhone uses, because no one else can come close to replicating a touch screen that good. Apple has done a lot of dick things. But that does not under any circumstance mean their products are terrible. They cost a lot. That's the only negative about them to the average consumer, even the average geek consumer. [editline]07:48PM[/editline]
Was in a store, where i saw the new "iMac" (Or whatever it's called). It costed around 2500$, had lower specs than my computer and it has the restriction, to games specifically designed for mac. My computer has a 23" screen (1650*1050), and costed 800$ (With screen). No one can defend apple for this. Well, ok i made my computer myself but whatever, it has twice the graphics strength!
The iMac starts at $1100 and goes up to just $2000 for a 2.66ghz quad core. Nice try. Care to expand your thought or are you gonna just jump on the bandwagon? Further more the OS makes dual booting Windows very easy if you want to game. [editline]07:50PM[/editline]
I just hate that you have to buy every damn app for every damn little function for the iPhone. And many of my friends complain about the batteries getting a huge drop in lifetime after a month of usage. So far I've seen 2 of them broken. They break very easily.
Since when are apps free for other phones? I remember tetris costed me like 5 bucks on my old Verizon phone a few years ago. And it sucked too. There are a ton of free apps on the iPhone too, and honestly a dollar isn't much for good software, it's the same price as a damn snickers bar.

People break their shit and buy new ones, that comes from my experience in electronics retail for several years. Sure us geeks care about it, but the whole world doesn't revolve around web forums. The Mac Pro has always been a joke. I don't really like the iMacs much either, I am a fan of their laptops which are incredible. The Mac Pro is just a cash whore for Apple to sell to businesses to look top of the line. Os x is actually awesome. (I used it for 3 years straight as well) See what ground we have covered? you give no support to anything. Android OS is pretty good and will be interesting to see if it can come through. Since the customer apparently always cares, if it's better it will sell more than the iPhone right? [editline]10:03PM[/editline]
osx owns stop being retards
These kind of comments are why people hate Macs in the first place.
you give no support to anything.
random kernel panics, symlinks breaking from normal use, serious speed issues, zapping pram/nvram, shit like that. also, android is already doing surprisingly well and the number of apps is rising. android is attractive for developers since development for it isn't restricted to mac os x and a shitty language (objective-c).
Maddox knows best
that was a good argument when he wrote it, too bad it's not 2007 anymore you know if you're going to be filled with hatred for everything apple ever makes maybe it would be best to know what you're arguing against. just some advice for the people in this thread :) [editline]04:47AM[/editline] stop fighting children you are ruining christmas :(

None of that has any impact on the average user.
I truly hate macs. I hate the fact that they say "No viruses" Well, no shit there are no fucking viruses,... Who the fuck wants to make one. I actually somewhat enjoy the ipod, but it fucking cracks me up, that my 20 dollar thing, a 3rd smaller than the nano and it can do more than the iPod so... Fuck off Apple <3's
Or you could just buy a 3 year warranty at Target for like 29 bucks and have it all done free. Or any other electronics store.
That's nice, but we have no such stores here. Plus I shouldn't have to buy an external warranty to justify paying $150 for this goofy little thing, and another $100-150 to ship the stupid thing off to them so they can ship it off to god-knows-where so that a robot can replace a tiny-ass little $20 battery cell.
Yes I wish they didn't solder the battery in but do you think the average consumer cares about that?
The "average consumer" cares very much about the fact that the decision to engineer it that way will cost them $150 in the long-run. What's worse is that you can pretty much just buy a NEW iPod which further adds to that ridiculous "throw-away society" mentality that alot of people have these days.
The extended warranty I was familiar with was one time fee to cover everything three years with free shipping. What you're getting into is more an ethical question against consumerism in general. It costs more to fix an older car than to trash it for a new one. Same thing applies to a lot of things. [editline]11:27PM[/editline] And I still don't think they do care, the average consumer; because the iphone still sells like crazy. Furthermore this only applies to their iPods, you can replace the batteries on their laptops easily.
Your comment makes even less sense if you look at the fact that Nokias phones were never made for the same consumers as the iphone
Yeah, Nokias are made for normal people while iPhones are made for tools who like shiny things and hate money.
Yeah, Nokias are made for normal people while iPhones are made for tools who like shiny things and hate money.
Nokia's Ovi Store: 2,500 apps. Apple's AppStore: 115,000 apps. Hurr.
Yeah, Nokias are made for normal people while iPhones are made for tools who like shiny things and hate money.
Now that's a hasty and somewhat rude generalization. Actually a type of logical fallacy.
The extended warranty I was familiar with was one time fee to cover everything three years with free shipping. What you're getting into is more an ethical question against consumerism in general.
Where I bought it I could get no such warranty. Boo-hoo for buying locally at Wal-Mart, right?
It costs more to fix an older car than to trash it for a new one.
Last I checked I didn't have to pay $20,000 for an alternator, battery, headlight, distributor, engine, transmission, or fuel tank. Plus my car's 25 years old with minimal problems because I'm able to maintain it by myself for not a whole lot of money.
Same thing applies to a lot of things.
And that makes it better... How?
And I still don't think they do care, the average consumer; because the iphone still sells like crazy. Furthermore this only applies to their iPods, you can replace the batteries on their laptops easily.
Saying the iPhone is an excellent piece of equipment because alot of people are buying it is like saying Twilight is a bitchin' rad movie because alot of people like it. Plus I don't know of many laptops (actually ANY laptops) that don't have removable batteries for the simple reason that if you have to leave the thing plugged in it will royally fuck your battery.
Now that's a hasty and somewhat rude generalization. Actually a type of logical fallacy.
Is it? You're saying that people aren't subject to buying shit just because it's "the latest thing" without doing any research about how shitty it might be? And only so they don't look like a loser for not having this new awesome phone that costs $500 and has a touch-screen, which is like a screen but you TOUCH it and STUFF happens?
See you already have discredited yourself. There are viruses for the Mac.
[editline]07:46AM[/editline] My wall of text broke.

I worked there. I'm not sure why you think that everyone has mechanical expertise, but the fact is that cars do eventually cost way more to repair and maintain than to purchase a new one. The parts are not nearly as expensive as the labor, and the cost of parts does go up eventually with time and rarity of the model. Except Twilight has horrible reviews and the iPhone constantly tops Consumer Reports and other reviews. Okay good, then are we talking solely about iPods? because this argument is supposed to be about their computers. That's what I was arguing for in the first place. I'm not sure what your point is. [editline]12:07AM[/editline] Basically to sum up your argument: The iPhone has a soldered battery, it is a terrible device because of so.
Nokia's Ovi Store: 2,500 apps. Apple's AppStore: 115,000 apps. Hurr.
You can download apps from anywhere, unlike with Apple you can just google for the installation file and install. No need to get it approved or anything. Thus there are very few programs in the Ovi store. Also a lot of those 115k apps are a bit useless, ebay app? facebook app? Why you can't just go to the website... Also on my phone I have SSH connection through putty to a unix shell with thousands and thousands of apps to install, it's very easy to use with qwerty and HD resolution display.
My Nokia has been able to use flash/java, have a 800x380 screen, recieve MMS, 2mpixel camera, 3g, changeable memory/battery, a real qwerty keyboard for 3 years now. Even by now iPhone is worse than my 3 year old phone so not really saying that all Nokia phones are crap.
It's not that the Iphone can't. It's that if apple added those features, people wont buy them when they release a new one with a minor upgrade.... (The fucking 3gs...) [editline]01:05PM[/editline]
Nokia's Ovi Store: 2,500 apps. Apple's AppStore: 115,000 apps. Hurr.
oh boy an apple fanboy HEAD FOR THE HILLS
Nokia's Ovi Store: 2,500 apps. Apple's AppStore: 115,000 apps. Hurr.
2,500 apps in a unified app store, on the internet it goes well over a million. Same with Windows Mobile. Also, the iPhone has a SAR rating of 1.4 W/kg (1.6 is a big risk for cancer), unlike most phones which have 0.5/0.8 Enjoy your cancer and sterilized balls.
I already suggested Target, because that is where the warranty is. I worked there.
Nah, next mp3 player I buy is gonna be non-Apple, preferably one where I can replace my own damn battery.
I'm not sure why you think that everyone has mechanical expertise, but the fact is that cars do eventually cost way more to repair and maintain than to purchase a new one.
It takes a LONG time for it to cost more to maintain a vehicle than it does to buy a new one. And unlike the iPod scenario it didn't cost $16,000 to replace the battery the first time it crapped out in this truck.
The parts are not nearly as expensive as the labor, and the cost of parts does go up eventually with time and rarity of the model.
Which is why I do as much as I can by myself rather than paying someone out the ass for what might actually be a simple procedure. Rebuild my engine/transmission? Yeah, that's a job for the pros. Replace my own fuel tank or alternator? That I can do. It's like comparing me wanting to replace my own battery to me wanting to replace the LCD by myself, but either way they shouldn't charge THAT fuckin' much to fix a device that's not even a year old. Hell, even when it was NEW the battery replacement costs were the same as what I bought it for! 10 years down the road if they still offered that service for whatever reason and I REALLY wanted to hold on to this antiquated thing then I MIGHT see slight justification in the costs.
Except Twilight has horrible reviews and the iPhone constantly tops Consumer Reports and other reviews.
The consumer report page I found had the iPhone listed in AT&T's recommended smart-phones, but had no review information on it.
Okay good, then are we talking solely about iPods? because this argument is supposed to be about their computers. That's what I was arguing for in the first place.
No, what we were arguing in the first place was the iPhone and wether or not it's a piece of junk, to which you said they weren't poorly built because they were durable to which I responded with how quality engineering is not only about durability but serviceability which led on to this whole iPod shitstorm we're in now.
I'm not sure what your point is.
Point is that people will pay too much for crappy merchandise with a brand-name slapped on it just to keep up with the Jones'. It's true with cars, it's true with clothes, and it's true with phones.
Basically to sum up your argument: The iPhone has a soldered battery, it is a terrible device because of so.
Basically to sum up my argument: Every other phone in existence has a removable battery, why the fuck can't Apple engineer their phone to do the same? Phones go through batteries like fucking Pez, so yes, I'd call that a shitty design.
ITT: dumb ratings are counter arguments
