That is a rebel jet being shot down by (alleged) friendly fire.
And we have our own jets flying over soon. :downs:
what time is it in libya right now? How long until they all wake up to the news that we finally came?
1:07, eet. Gmt+2. Its inevitable. I think the rebels will stop that now.

They're going to have problems especially if NATO pulls off night sorties. I never really gave thought to what powers submarines. Fuckin shit nuclear power is cool. Its untapped potential in all areas of engineering is probably the way of the future. /offtopic Just waiting for pics of Ghaddafys stronghold in a smoking heap of rubble to surface.

By the sounds of it that was shot down with AAA not an AA missile. So modern jets should be able to out fly it.
What time is it in Libya right now? How long until they all wake up to the news that we finally came?
I imagine even the heaviest sleeper would've been woke up when missiles started killing stuff nearby.

As well as some Russian icebreakers.
[img_thumb]http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/7509/x800f.jpg[/img_thumb] Libyan bomber jet shot out of the sky.
Looks like a MiG-23, isn't that another picture of the rebel plane shot down?
And conversely there's no way that the aircrews can distinguish between loyalst and rebel forces if they're already neck-deep in combat.
Iirc they've started coordinating with the rebels. We might soon have rebels designating targets for coalition jets to take out. For now it would be wise for them to stick to easily identifiable targets e.g. the artillery outside Benghazi.
...as long as said AAA are manually-operated ones.
Maybe we should drop leaflets in town telling the Rebels to not shoot at planes anymore and that we got this shit in the air.
...as long as said AAA are manually-operated ones.
I am assuming (maybe incorrectly) that Libya does not have anything other than manually operated AAA.
We should probably tell the rebels to stop shooting at aircraft, as a precaution, and seeing as we'll probably have the Air situation covered in a day or two.
Looks like a MiG-23, isn't that another picture of the rebel plane shot down?
MiG-23BN
Iirc they've started coordinating with the rebels. It's a more complex task than "Hey pilot, I need bombs dropped on those tanks next to that fountain!". Cutting off the legs of the loyalists will be effective if the Battle of Benghazi becomes a drawn-out struggle of attrition.
I am assuming (maybe incorrectly) that Libya does not have anything other than manually operated AAA.
They've got 250 ZSU-23-4, which are vehicle-mounted and come with on-board radar. The rest of it is ZUs and ZPUs.
I am assuming (maybe incorrectly) that Libya does not have anything other than manually operated AAA.
Libya does have some Shilkas. Jane's says around 250.

Dammit, ninja'd [editline]19th March 2011[/editline]
I didn't expect they'd be particularly good at it, but any information from the ground would be better than nothing.
Well, who knows. Even American FACs aren't flawless. http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Transcript_of_the_%27friendly_fire%27_incident_video_%2828_March_2003%29 Transcript shows the kind of stuff that FACs radio to the pilots.
2304: LibyanYouthMovement tweets: "ALL, yes ALL Gaddafi forces in ZINTAN have joined the #Feb17 revolution, Zintan now fully armed and ready #Libya #gaddaficrimes" It's starting!
What is starting? The same thing that has been going on for weeks now?
What is starting? The same thing that has been going on for weeks now?
Perhaps "restarting" would have been a better word to use.

Full translated text of Gaddafi's statement earlier
France, which is leading a number of Christian colonialist states, carried out in the recent hours a flagrant military aggression against the territories of Libya, an independent member-state of the UN. This comes as a breach of the UN Charter which bans the use of force or even threats of its use. France, and the aggressor states alongside it, have breached the UN charter. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, it should have banned any other state from breaching the Charter, from using force or threatening to use force in order to resolve international disputes. The UNSC and the international community have the responsibility to immediately stop this flagrant and unjust aggression against Libya which is an independent state. Libya will be practising its right of self-defence according to clause 51 of the UN Charter. Unfortunately, according to this, civilian and military targets in the air and sea will be liable to serious danger in the Mediterranean. Due to this flagrant military aggression and this irresponsible action, the Mediterranean and North Africa have become an actual theatre of war. The interest of states will be in danger, as of now, in the Mediterranean due to this completely unjustifiable and crazy act of aggression, in addition to it being a colonialist crusading aggression capable of igniting a large-scale second Crusade. The brave Libyan people is standing face to this colonialist, crusading aggression with all steadfastness, courage, will, patience and reliance on God. They are calling on the people and citizens of the Arab, Islamic, African, Latin American and Asian nations to side with them, the heroic Libyan people who are standing face to this aggression which only adds resolve, strength and cohesion to a domestic national united front. Arms depots are now open and the masses are being equipped with all sorts of weapons in defence of Libya's independence, unity and honour.

Perhaps "restarting" would have been a better word to use.
Nah. Starting is good. Some people in neat suits said it's ok to kill in Libya. So starting killing it is.
Full translated text of Gaddafi's statement earlier
Does this mean we'll see Libyan acts of aggression in other countries or just in the Med?
BBC are doing their duty and covering both sides of the story. The person before the current person talking was much more interesting, they were talking about how accurate cruise missiles were and how they missed their house and a hospital to hit a military base.
Well, who knows. Even American FACs aren't flawless.
Nah. Starting is good. Some people in neat suits said it's ok to kill in Libya. So starting killing it is.
Well, they've been fighting and killing for a while, and this isn't the first time a large group of the Libyan military has joined the rebels.
