Some sources are saying that the plane was taken out while it was on the ground. With a ground attack weapon.
[release]Staff Reporter
KOTTAYAM: The house surgeons in the government medical colleges in the State have decided to resort to a 24-hour strike pressing for the implementation their demands. The medicos had boycotted duties for two hours as part of a token strike on Tuesday.
In a statement, Kerala House Surgeons Association secretary Nikhil Madhuripan said that the house surgeons would boycott out-patients department, intensive care units and labour room and causality duties for 24 hours from 8 a.m. on December 31. “If the government fails to come forward and implement our demands, we will be forced to go in for indefinite strike,” Mr. Madhuripan said.
The house surgeons have raised a three point charter of demands, including increase in stipend, better accommodation facilities and security at the work place. The statement said they were engaged in peaceful agitation methods for the past one year, but the authorities have lent a deaf ear to their grievances so far. They had met the Minister for Health in person and had also sent separate memoranda through the respective medical college Principals.
They said they were concerned about the difficulties of the common man, but had no other way left due to the apathy towards their legitimate demands.[/release]
edit: Holy shit, wrong thread :v:
BTW the road reconstruction image that was posted earlier was legit. It was taken from a different part of the road, but it was the same road.

1918: Ban Ki-moon says his envoy warned the Libyan government that the UN Security Council make take "additional measures" if there is no compliance with the UN resolution
I wonder what they mean by "additional measures".
Oh, and the shoot down incident has really degraded over the hours, it now appears a French jet hit an aircraft just after it landed.

Imagine being hit by that. Well, it's hard to imagine, because you'd be dead. But still...
Or this:

Seems the US is bailing out this weekend and transferring command to NATO. Can't blame em. Hopefully NATO won't be forced to send ground troops if shit ever gets worse.

If NATO just wants to enforce a no-fly zone solely for the purpose of not letting Gaddafi's planes into the air - and nothing else - then no ground forces need to be committed. If you want Gaddafi out of power (and considering the state of the rebels, which are not actively coordinating with the air component among other things), then the air war alone will not solve the problem.
NATO Secy. General was on CNN...
Says he's considering expanding and will make a decision about it in the coming days.
fuck the police... americano can do what the want..

that's the end of story.
I heard that defecting army fragments were training the rebels, do we know how many have defected and how extensive their training of the rebels is?

Well as long as the French keep bombing every tank that pokes its head out of the cities the only thing we need to worry about is whether Gaddafi's militia alone can hold back the rebels (since a tank inside a city is a lot easier to overrun than a tank in the open field).

I wouldn't place too much faith on "systematic annihilation". Military success in the modern age has come from having considering the observable factors of the situation in planning, rather than on "hoping".
Gaddafi hasn't shown as much finesse as say Serbia during Operation Allied Force, but so far they haven't been as stupid as Iraq. Anyone still fervently beliving in Giulio Douhet's theories are out of their minds.

Exactly. But right now, we don't really know whether the rebel numbers or the amount of coordination Gaddafi's army will win the fight.

According to the BBC the "current collation" will continue with their current airstrikes etc. So by the sounds of it the US etc will continue to take out anything on the ground threatening civilians while NATO will command anything enforcing the NFZ.
Could get a bit complex.

Saw this in my local paper a week ago.

They have 1000 trained men.

Of course not counting the various civilians turned rebels.
Fuck this war, the only people who want it are the one's who created it, FOR THEIR GOD DAMN BENEFIT.
"Oh, I'm such a bitch, I'm going to listen to anything the news tells me, and believe it, since you know, when have they ever lied to us?"
And fuck "war on terror", it's war on peace. It's not fighting terrorists, it's being a terrorist. Fuck your brainwashed zombies back on your home land, and fuck the ignorant nihilists you train to become killers for you.

Well, if ALL the news organizations are lying (that's right, there are multiple news networks, not just "the news"), how exactly would I get any information on the situation in Libya? I guess I'll just call up all my Libyan relatives and contacts....oh wait.
You have no idea what this is about do you?
Irritating twats like him never do. To them, Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam and Libya are just "places full of foreign people" and thus interchangeable, in terms of the mission, the tactics, the participants and the outcome.
Isn't a War ALWAYS started over SOMEONE's benefit?
Isn't a War ALWAYS started over SOMEONE's benefit?
Sometimes, though don't rule out incompetence or system failure e.g. WW1. In this case, when someone states that they usually always mean that the West instigated the Libyan civil war for their own economic benefit, which is ridiculous. Not least because western companies have now lost access to the oil that they were happily extracting with little interference from Gaddafi's government. And if Gaddafi wins, which while unlikely is a conceivable risk., it's unlikely he'll let them back.
