whats with windows lately and incorporating that weird startscreen, picture slideshow thingy.
I don't actually have any pictures on my computer, phone or cloud in general worth being on my start screen. if I ever upgraded to windows 8, my start screen would be full of funny pictures, pictures of my friends and me fucking around and porn.
lots of porn
Looks great for tablets.
I love Windows 8 now, but I don't use the start screen at all because it's simply not what I hoped it would be. This looks like it has some of the things I'd hoped be there so maybe I'll get some use out of it?
One of my favorite things about it is the fact that I can open the search with one of my side mouse buttons to get around my computer, and this pretty much nulls the needs for the start screen for me. I'm glad to see they improved the search even more.
People don't give enough 8 credit for some of the genuinely awesome upgrades like boot times.
Lack of proper multi-monitor support still sucks ass though. Microsoft should give those of us that use monitors of different resolutions some love.
Uhhh the mixed-resolution multi-monitor support is superb
It no longer does that awful thing where if the lower resolution screen is the main monitor, the higher resolution monitor's background won't fill the screen
You can show the task bar on both monitors
Unless you are talking about using metro apps on both monitors
This shouldn't be a problem because the apps are shit and you don't need to use them

Multimoniter works for me by default for single screen gaming and general multitasking. Now, when I do add special resolutions in Nvidia Surround things do get a bit wonky. For example, the metro interface does not scale to match the resolution so the tiles are extra big and certain aero functions don't work.

that looks awful
Honestly Windows 8.1 makes Windows so much better than 8. Not to mention it's a free update. This update every year instead of every 3 years so far is going great.
Maybe I'll be able to actually organize metro now. I don't even bother with it currently, but the desktop on Windows 8 is lovely.

And explorer looks so nice on windows 8.

What's the difference if the start menu is full screen or not? How does it distract you from what you are doing? Either way you're going to divert your full attention to the menu and it makes more sense to make it an easier and better looking menu. I've never clicked the wrong shortcut using metro. I've always accidentally clicked the wrong application using the smaller start menu.
tbh i haven't even used the start menu a lot since 7 introduced pinning
does it still force you to use fullscreen shit to access options like changing your password and creating user accounts ?
nope it's still in the control panel, but you can do it from metro

i'm not even going to upgrade windows 7 until they either fix metro or make fullscreen shit optional.
You can use metro all of one time then completely forget about it. There are tweaks online that even let you open directly to desktop.
The search is built into metro though, but you can access it directly by moving your mouse to the corner of your screen and clicking search, so its not a worry either.
Its pretty simple to use.
It's not that people hate Windows 8, it's just a huge misunderstanding. Metro is there, yes, but you can just click the desktop button in the start screen and you have windows 7 with lots of improvements to Explorer, that nice right click menu on the start button and PC refresh (that was in XP I believe).
I like my desktop too much and I hated UAC in Vista and 7 so... After I turned off UAC permanently, I never touched touched a Metro app again. [sp]Because Metro apps require UAC.[/sp]
anyone know if windows 8 is reinstallable on other hard drives? i wanna duel install win 8 to a linux based computer to mess around and learn it abit before i install it on my main computer. is their going to be any complications to this?

Meh, I just use Classic Shell. I like the Win 7 start menu look the most.
Frankly, I think the removal of the start menu has been really really good for my desktop usage of Windows. It's encouraged me to put everything on my taskbar, something I was originally a little dubious of doing being worried about the clutter, eliminating a click from opening programs and making everything feel much faster and more elegant. I've even got the control panel on there, having never even considered doing it in 7. In fact, I'd say my taskbar looks way cleaner without that honking big orb and I actually hope there's a way of disabling the start button in 8.1.
Multi-monitor is improved compared to Windows 7, but like DPI scaling Microsoft needs to completely revamp it.
If you want to access the control panel and such, either pin it, or just right click in the lower left-hand corner. You have access to most stuff there.
Also open the settings Charm from the bottom right, and you got quick necessities like PC Info, Control Panel, Personalization and all that jazz.
Oh Microsoft, making multiple ways to get to multiple things.
The search thing looks cool, but being powered by Bing I'm sure it won't be useful.
The search thing looks cool, but being powered by Bing I'm sure it won't be useful.
Bing isn't really any worse than Google at this point. I just use Google because that's what's on the omnibar.

I have to disagree. Explorer in Windows 7 looked a lot nicer and more organised. The inclusion of the ribbon interface in 8 makes it look a bit sloppy, mainly because none of it seems to be consistent.
For example, in your screenshot you can see icons such as the Properties menu take up a lot more space and are shown in an icon view, yet a commonly-used feature like Select All is demoted to a smaller, list-like button. It's a small price to pay for the improvements in Windows 8 but it reeks of inconsistency.

I've never quite understood this argument.
Why not, exactly? What problems are there with having it in fullscreen?
I mean, when you open the start menu it'll be the only thing you focus on until you've clicked on something. It works exactly the same, except now you have more space and customization options.

Well you're actually sort of wrong, I've seen many examples of Google being much faster to pick up on new things and show them as results.

The ribbon can be hidden, of course.

Yep, I'm aware of that and have it hidden on my laptop, but if you're new to it or have some other excuse for not knowing how to hide it, it can be a bit of a hinderance. Like I said, though, only a small price to pay really.
I switched to using (any) Linux distro as my main OS from now on because of Metro.
Some silly little color changes and features that should have been there from the start won't make me like it. Give us the option of a start menu again.

Going fullscreen in a game will fuck up the monitor it's not being used on if both monitors are not the same resolution. This problem was also in Win7.
So for those of us who can't afford to get another matching monitor or for practical reasons don't have the space (My desk won't fit another monitor we have to either put up with it and stop using the second monitor for the duration of the game, play it windowed, or play it borderless fullscreen (that not all games support.) I'm stuck with my new one at 1920x1080 and my old one at 1024x768.
