Anxiety, Depression High Among Young Heavy Metal Fans

I feel somewhat offended, I have an afro and I listen to metal.
what kind of metal do you listen to?
Metallica, Iron Maiden, Marilyn Manson, All That Remains, August Burns Red, Asking Alexandria, Bring Me The Horizon, Black Sabbath, Dethklok
thats just a few off the top of my head that I have, but I have a bunch more. I've branched out with my music tastes but metal was one of the first genres of music I got into as a kid.
Does speedcore and Noise count? If so then it explains alot.
Noise is pretty different from metal in a lot of respects.
What kind of metal is everyone in this thread into anyway? I'm a Judas Priest, Megadeth, Evile, Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath kind of guy.
I'm glad they mentioned that their anger levels were no different, since that's one stereotype I've never agreed with. All the metalheads I know are some of the calmest people I've met, usually because the music itself acts as a form of stress relief.
You have to keep in mind though that this survey was done on college students, there's a lot of difference between a metalhead at that age and an older one.
College students tend to be depressed, stressed, and anxious just because of the setting they are in.
I'm into power/heavy/symphonic/speed.
Iron Maiden/Judas Priest/Falconer/Blind Guardian/Hammerfall/Rhapsody/Sabaton/etc
I also have some anxiety and was depressed (before I started listening to metal, not depressed anymore)
so since I listen to very calming downtempo and swing I'm more likely to be "ok"?

Nujabes is such nerdbait music. Same with shit like The Protomen, Caravan and Steampunk Giraffe. Fedoras and "swaggy (not in the rap way)" blazers while wearing fingerless gloves and talking about atheism.
so gross
and?

I hate the idea of "Following" music, i just listen to what feels right
[sp]besides downtempo is to complicated for you to understannnnndddd god stupid pretentious metal head! xD![/sp]
What worries me more is that they're wasting their precious time on these studies. Who gives a crap? How about you research something useful for a change.

European metal FTW, none of those gauges for me :D.
Sabaton, Iron Maiden, a little Rammstein, Alestorm, Turisis and Korpiklanni are my favorites.
Some metal is quite uplifting and euphoric, don't know where they get "anxiety" and "depression" from. Many young people are anxious and depressed so......
The only thing I could think is that it's not so much the music but the community. Metal is very insular, and from my experience communities built around it tend to be somewhat tight-knit and share very similar opinions. So if you're already feeling down and such, discovering a community like that would be appealing so you'd tend to stick around.

Also untrue, but if you experience that then fair enough.
I know a lot of people who listen to metal who fit no real "demographic", young and old.
I feel like i've had a much more positive uplifting attitude about a lot of things since I started listening to Power Metal in like 2009. The music helped me feel a lot better in some gloomy times.
Of course my individual anecdotal evidence proves nothing.
Black or Liquid?
No thanks I like my coffee fossilized with sugar.
Also untrue, but if you experience that then fair enough.

Fair enough, it's probably just my local scene that's made me notice it.
Don't know if this has been posted yet, but people need to be careful about the conclusions one can draw from studies like this. Correlation doesn't necessarily imply reason. In this case it would be that metal causes depression. I would put my dollars in the opposite; metal having a certain appeal to depressed persons as a form of ventilation.

You can't say that just because you haven't seen it that it doesn't exist, Ak'z.
Of course metalheads are depressed, Dio is fucking dead
Stop bringing back painful memories, news media
we're trying to MOVE ON
only black is true metal
Make that symphonic black.
I don't like the direction Metal has gone since maybe the late 90's so I am stuck listening to proto-metal and NWOBM from the 70's and non-hair stuff from the 80's early 90's when it comes to metal.
Make that symphonic black.
symphonic black metal is like pineapple on a pizza
it's fine but not all the time
Only metal I listen to is Dethklok
Metal is like the ultimate try-hard genre IMO. Every other genre is kinda reserved, but the metal genre just seems to scream "Hey guys look how cool and hardcore this is!"

It's like that now but it used to be the shit. But fuck being reserved, im sick of so many bands not even trying at anything and being dull. Metal is try-hard but at least they try.

That's a mighty big generalization. Something tells me you don't know what you're talking about.

Yeah other genres are reserved that's why you have rap artists living in billion dollar mansions and pop stars more famous than the president

I never liked pineapple on pizza so I'll have to disagree. :v:
Just listen to Dimmu Borgirs ABRAHADABRA, that album is amazing.
