Metal is like the ultimate try-hard genre IMO. Every other genre is kinda reserved, but the metal genre just seems to scream "Hey guys look how cool and hardcore this is!"
Let's play "Find The Person That Talks Out Of Their Ass"
I never liked pineapple on pizza so I'll have to disagree. :v:
Just listen to Dimmu Borgirs ABRAHADABRA, that album is amazing.
Ever heard Carach Angren? Pretty damn sweet symphonic black metal with incredibly vivid lyrics. It is like reading a book.
Short 1 minute song that will act as a teaser

Enthrone Darkness Triumphant best
I got into Melodic death metal because of the lyrics, and moved to other "metals" from there.
So yeah this article is true, and not really surprising.
started with Obscura, now go back and forth between Cynic, Gojira, ISIS, Pelican, The Ocean, Omega Massif, Agalloch, every once in a while Sunn O))), and Earth.
that is, when i do listen to metal.

get on my level metal losers
Yeah, I'm sure at least 20% of those people are referring to Screamo and Blood on the Dance Floor as metal.
Anyone who actually likes Blood on the Dance Floor should probably just kill them selves now to spare the rest of us the torture of having to share this planet with them.

I like Cynic.
Go to a metal show. It's a different experience, and while I would definitely agree with the idea that there's a shit ton of angsty young metal listeners who has social issues. I'd also say that metal didn't cause that, and that metal gives them a more comfortable home than they get from anyone else.
But seriously. Go to a metal show. At least in my city(and most cities it seems according to Global Metal, a documentary on metal) these shows are packed with people, there's a strange uniform to the crowd, there's a serious amount of energy in the environment, but none of it's particularly angry. Then you get into the moshing and the actual violence, which even still, isn't really violence. A person falls down, s/he is instantly picked up and brushed off by everyone around them. There's no desire to harm, only to enjoy what's going on.
I feel like this is going to be missed by most people who read this article and they just assume that metal makes kids angsty and violent.

did you like even read the article
they specifically said they that anger wasn't different between metal and non metal listeners
anxiety and depression =/= violence

I did
Oh people never make stupid conclusions from studies, never ever!
It honestly depends on what type of metal.
But I see no correlation with the research when the band is Iron Maiden or D.R.I. Thrash metal however IMO depends on the band even. I don't feel depressed when D.R.I. is blaring, but when something like the song After the Holocaust by Nuclear Assault is on my mood goes down. Maybe because of the lyrics of the after effects of a nuclear war.
People are different and I don't see how this research proves anything.
Well what "metal"?
Are they testing them with Nightwish or are they testing them with Dio?
Are they going heavy or speed?
Black or Liquid?
Hair or Metalcore?
There's a lot of variables as opposed to just "metal".
kinda late but

had to post this rediculously detailed chart
[editline]18th April 2013[/editline]
im fairly certain people make the metal, not metal making the people
~ Traditional~ and New Wave of British heavy metal represent. None of those pesky subgenres, just electric guitars and men in bondage gear

you're clearly the most metal person on facepunch
this kind of music is just an act you put on to hide the fact that you only listen to late 80s/early 90s demo tapes from norwegian black metal bands

Emo and Hardcore are NOT metal. At all. They are types of Punk music.
Emo and Hardcore are NOT metal. At all. They are types of Punk music.
Wow, hey, us punks don't want them either. Can we lump them under pop or something?
I like metal a lot, and I'm depressed a lot. Fuck.
What kind of metal is everyone in this thread into anyway? I'm a Judas Priest, Megadeth, Evile, Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath kind of guy.
I like progressive, power and thrash mostly (although I listen to some industrial, classic, glam, folk, symphonic and avant-garde metal, among other subgenres.)
Of course metalheads are depressed, Dio is fucking dead

we're trying to MOVE ON
TAKE YOUR OWN ADVICE.
i never imagined myself listening to the kind of metal i do now back when i started with killswitch engage/all that remains/trivium etc.
but that's true with a lot of music genres, too
"Young Heavy metal fans"
"Young metal fans"
"Young"
Wow, hey, us punks don't want them either. Can we lump them under pop or something?
I listen to way more punk than metal (as evidenced by my avatar, the most punk band ever, crass /s), but Emo can be really good (stuff like Sunny Day Realestate or Saetia), and Hardcore IS punk

Did they survey people who listen to Nickelback?
Did they survey people who listen to Nickelback?
yes they did
the result is that most of the people who listen to nickleback are normal people who lead healthy social lives.

I'd like to know your definition of normal, because nickleback fans are way too dumb to be normal.
