• Anxiety, Depression High Among Young Heavy Metal Fans

I don't like the fact that these studies are always conducted on metal music. Why don't they ever do studies on the stuff in the charts? In any case, I'm a young heavy metal fan, and I'd say I'm pretty happy with my life and where it's going. So nyerr.

The only thing I could think of when I saw the title of this post: Thank you, Cpt. Obvious
I can relate to this, at least when I think of myself a couple years back. I started getting into metal at a time in my life where I couldn't stand school: everyone in my class was shit, either waiting to turn 16 so they could drop out or just plain dumb and irresponsible. Didn't have many friends either, and even though I wasn't unpopular, I was popular for the wrong reasons (really good grades, video games, introverted... I was some sort of "incredibly gifted/autistic nerd"). Metal was a way of escaping from that shitty situation. Nowadays those problems are gone, but I've delved into more types of metal through the years. Now it's just music that I enjoy very much, and (at least to me) makes me feel great. Just yesterday I saw Decrepit Birth, Cattle Decapitation and Cryptopsy live, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a great time.
Because Metal tends to be the most aggressive genre.
Metal isn't aggressive. It's energetic. There's a difference.
Metal isn't aggressive. It's energetic. There's a difference.
Uh yes it can be aggressive.
I recently started experimenting with metal as a genre, and I am currently the happiest and calmest I have been in a very long time. I feel nothing but positive and uplifting emotions when listening to it, by enjoying its powerful energy and atmosphere.
Metal isn't aggressive.
First thing (majority) people think of when it comes to metal is aggression so.... Thing is... most people are divided when it comes to both Hip-Hop and Metal. Both are "extremes" for people. [editline]27th April 2013[/editline] Not that it matters, that's how people are brought up.. I hardly know anyone who listened to metal or hiphop at that much of an early age. I don't think my nephew's parents will like their kids listening to it so that's how it is.
Uh yes it can be aggressive.
I think rap is more aggressive. [editline]27th April 2013[/editline] hip-hop
I think rap is more aggressive. [editline]27th April 2013[/editline] hip-hop
not really. Both have both soft and aggressive subgenres. [editline]27th April 2013[/editline] here's a hip-hop album about death: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_coKAShSuc Sounds nothing like a metal album about death. :v:
Metal isn't aggressive. It's energetic. There's a difference.
no it's aggressive.
Problem is, most metal these days is shit. I listen to more uplifting metal and hard rock, like Dio, Rush, and especially Iron Maiden. Also some Megadeth. I'm not depressed or anxious in any way. Those groups shouldn't be grouped in with emo scream metal and whatnot.
I find that metal pacifies me. I've been through depression and am a very socially anxious and generally anxious kind of person and have been diagnosed with Aspergers before. This doesn't really surprise me, the number of people I'd rate as similar to myself I've met at metal festivals and gigs is pretty high.
Metal makes me happy. Sure, a lot of what I listen to has somewhat depressing lyrics, but my reaction to them isn't "aww man everything sucks" it's more like "when the going gets tough the tough get going". I used to be a pretty depressed kid, but discovering metal music was one of the things that helped me get through that phase. I'm much better now. I even work out almost everyday. Metal is awesome.
Metal isn't aggressive. It's energetic. There's a difference.
uhh almost all metal is aggressive and while yes, it can also be just energetic, it's almost always aggressive to a certain extent examples
Of course metalheads are depressed, Dio is fucking dead Stop bringing back painful memories, news media we're trying to MOVE ON
Don't dance in darkness. You may stumble and you're sure to fall :( Alestorm is best storm
Alestorm's a joke blown way outa proportion.
Metal is my favorite genre of music but I don't get the whole correlation with violence. Sure, I can be depressed and I'm quite bad with anxiety. I can vouch for that, but I've never been in a fight in my life. I can't lie, I do get pretty pissed off at games sometimes though. Specifically retards in League and bad teams in CoD. :v:
I'm sure I would be way more depressed if I listened to pop lol.
Alestorm's a joke blown way outa proportion.
I think this is more deserving of that title.
im depressed listeing to dumbstep.
Metal never really made me depressed or anything, More so it helped relieve it in a non violent way. I also grew up in a rock-friendly house with my father waking us up early in the morning with deep purple on week ends, so I naturally went to metal and i actually got my father hooked on it. I'm not in anyway depressed or constantly angry at all anymore really. where the hell is this analyses coming from?
Alestorm's a joke blown way outa proportion.
Oh bugger off, they sound quite nice and are extremely fun to see in concert, all nice guys.
come on I love alestorm too, but they're pretty gimmicky
They're a novelty band, their music is meh at best, it revolves around the stupid gimmick "pirates are so awsum amirite guys? RUM KEELHAUL LOL". I've seen them live twice, eh, the concerts are pretty fun I guess.
