Yes, I read it. This is the only bit that described anything about the bill. Please point me to the good parts of this bill.
Because a $1500 increase in taxes to the families just scraping by is a great idea.
Because a $1500 increase in taxes to the families just scraping by is a great idea.
You increase social programs to make up for it. You have $1500 less? Oh, well have some free health care like the rest of the civilized world.
Umm yeah, taxes need to go up for everyone. The wealthy especially.
The revenue lost from the tax cut is minimal and it was made up elsewhere. This bill pays for itself. Also, tell that "taxes need to go up for everyone" to someone who lives paycheck to paycheck, because that's where these cuts are being made. [editline]8th September 2011[/editline] And increasing social plans won't work everywhere, and would cost more money than it would save. Being "fiscally responsible" is half the job of this bill.
The idea is that you tax the people who haven't given their proper amount first, i.e. the wealthy. From there you work DOWN. Like ASmellyOgre said, the bill pretty much pays for itself. There's a reason why Obama is cutting taxes on the middle-class, and that's because they are heavily hit. Allowing them to keep more money in their wallet is an incentive to work and relieves some of the pressure of the economy. [editline]9th September 2011[/editline]
Romney's a showman for the Republican's with slightly above-average intelligence compared to the rest of them. And he has little more to offer. There's certainly nothing special or redeeming about him. His whole thesis on creating jobs in the United States can pretty much be summed up as:
Actually, Romney being a showman and an intelligent candidate is huge for him. He was considered a little too "new" and revolutionary (for lack of a better term) for the Republicans during the 2008 elections, and he looked "weird" compared to McCain. If he's seen as a showman, well, he's got a perfect opening to steal the nomination. Because that's the exact impression he needs right now, to prevent his Mormon religion and non-radical Right Wing views from deterring his campaign. Besides, I'd much rather have Romney as an opposing candidate to Obama than Bachmann, Perry, or any other given Tea Party member. At least Romney is open to discussion and approaches things rationally. I think Bachmann wouldn't change her opinion on things if a mob was about to kill her (which, after all, is a glorified description of the contemporary Congress :v: ).
The idea is that you tax the people who haven't given their proper amount first, i.e. the wealthy. From there you work DOWN.
Yeah, I'm not disagreeing with that. The wealthy should be taxed much more heavily.
Like ASmellyOgre said, the bill pretty much pays for itself.
The middle class doesn't need a tax cut to make working more attractive. And unemployed people aren't going to be like, "Finally, payroll taxes were cut, time to find a job I guess."
If you're getting a tax break at your job, and you're about to retire, it does make working longer a bit more attractive. Also, the unemployed won't have that opinion, but employers will look to create more jobs due to the tax breaks. It creates a chain reaction where there's more jobs available.
Buddy Roemer is the best Republican candidate. He is socially conservative (pro-life, anti-universal healthcare, and things like that), but he actually understands money. He is for increasing taxes on the wealthy, taxing large corporations more, denying lobbyists the ability to pay politicians, reversal of "corporations are people," and every other sort of thing like that. He's calm, rational, and considers opposing opinions. He's also by far and wide the most qualified candidate for nomination. I'd never vote for him, but I wouldn't try to leave the country if he were elected, like I would for Rick Perry or Michelle Bachmann. Of course, all of that means that the Republicans would never vote for him. They're too corrupt. [editline]8th September 2011[/editline] Also, he wasn't allowed into the last debates.
Obama pointed out the fact that Warren Buffet pays less in taxes than the average secretary, but fails to even try to change that by increasing taxes on the ultra-rich.
Obama pointed out the fact that Warren Buffet pays less in taxes than the average secretary, but fails to even try to change that by increasing taxes on the ultra-rich.
He tried a while ago, but the Republicans wouldn't budge for anything. So to avoid calamity, the Democrats let it be extended.
...Including mentioning how Warren Buffet is calling for the removal of wealthy tax breaks.
Maybe he'll be more ballsy in a second term since he's not just trying to get re-elected? [editline]8th September 2011[/editline] Broke mah automerge. But yes ogre, the Republicans won't budge. These two sides think they're so different politically when they're actually pretty close to each other on the right side of center.
This is socialism at its worst.
Obama pointed out the fact that Warren Buffet pays less in taxes than the average secretary, but fails to even try to change that by increasing taxes on the ultra-rich.
It's pretty much impossible to do because of the Republicans. He's pointing it out to stir the public's desire to push taxes on the rich. Not because he can legitimately do anything in Congress. [editline]9th September 2011[/editline]
This is socialism at its worst.
in the end, we are all just puppets to the evil, communist nazi that is president obama and his "axis of evil" cabinet. i hope michelle bachmann gets elected. she'd teach a thing or two to those fascist socialists, haha!
This is socialism at its worst.
Oh, to be silly and delusional. [editline]8th September 2011[/editline] By the way, where can I find a video of the speech, having a bit of a hard time.
Enjoy, [sp]megan fax[/sp]
Many thanks.
Actually, updating the OP with that now, since this thread is kinda a News thread for the speech anyway.
Holy fuck that speech, it's amazing. If this isn't passed I'll lose what little hope I have left in this country.
Yeah, I thought it was pretty good.
Wow, I don't think I've ever seen the man so passionate about what he's talking about before.
I hope he means what he says about the lobbiests.
Wow, I don't think I've ever seen the man so passionate about what he's talking about before.
He had a lot of good zingers: "Warren Buffet pays less taxes than his secretary, and that's not right." "We don't need to roll back long-standing protections and bargaining rights to fix our economy." "We cannot allow this to become another political circus [like the debt ceiling debate]."

Boehner looks so engaged.
Boehner looks so engaged.
And so orange.
Amazing speech, but I couldn't stop staring at Boehner. He just sat there looking like an asshole. I don't even know what he was thinking or whether he was happy or mad or what. But he seriously just looked like an ass.
Michelle Bachman will create more jobs than Obama ever will. Bachman 2012!!1
The Porn Police will need a large employee base
I thought his ideas and speech was very good. My dad was screaming at the tv "SEE HE ADMITTED HE'S WRONG, LOOK 2 YEARS AGO HE SAID HE WOULDN'T TAX THE RICH, NOW LOOK WHAT HE'S DOING, TAXING THE RICH, FUCK OBAMA IM NOT VOTING FOR HIM" I got up and left.
Uh his campaign promise was to let Bush tax cuts for higher incomes expire, which he ended up breaking, so your dad's kind of like incorrect in the most extreme sense.
I'd have to say this is probably one of the best speeches he's given since... Fuck, his inauguration. If this bill doesn't pass for some unfathomable reason, it really will be do or die for Obama: Either stand up and refuse to take anymore of the Republicans' actions, or look even weaker and continue on the self-destructive path he's been leading so far.
Yeah, we need to spend more money on a plan that won't really do anything. Remember the last time he had a plan like this? Remember how it didn't work?
goodness me Obama has aged
