We only [I]need[/I] to drill there because oil companies have a stranglehold on the development of alternative fuels. Drilling in the gulf only de-incentivizes the development of new technologies, and the amount of oil it produces is only enough to lower prices slightly, anyway. Drilling in the gulf of mexico is a shitty solution to a problem that's only going to get worse, no matter how much we drill.
