If the Kasich thing is true, I doubt he became the running mate out of loyalty alone- he wanted to rule the world as VP, just like his inspiration Dick Cheney was. Unfortunately for him, he didn't realize that Trump was way dumber and more problematic than George Bush ever was. He suffered from very severe depression - like, he had to check himself into hospital multiple times due to physical exhaustion. The VP's highest responsibility is to be ready and fit to take over the presidency, and unfortunately Eagleton's own doctor could not guarantee to McGovern that he would be able to do that.

Afaik McGovern did originally say he would stand with Eagleton "1000 percent" despite any political backlash, but changed his mind after consulting with psychiatrists
