First knowledge of GameSpy for me was Star Trek : Elite Force Multiplayer.
Same here; I played the hell out of that game when I was a kid. Sucks to see GameSpy going, and more or less crippling so many good games in the process.
I played AvP2 on Gamespy during my formative years and camped out at the planetavp forums. Can't even find planetavp.com anymore, /tear
I think that site got shut down after the guy they put in charge of it stopped updating it suddenly (he pretty much just up and disappeared from the site). I remember a lot of the forum members tried to make a new website, outpostavp, but I think that got abandoned, too. There's still a steam group, though. God I loved planetavp. I miss the Bob and Progg stories.
I thought it shut down a while ago.
There website yes. The server side is separate trough.
Rest in peace childhood. Pre-Hitler EA.
Holy shit i just remembered. Battlefield 2 uses Gamespy ;-;7
No more non-LAN Stronghold multiplayer I think. Also no more Rise of Nations/Rise of Legends multiplayer.
Awwwwe no!

I remember using Gamespy for OFP and Rogue Spear. Ads were a pain the ass and made it terrible to use, but you had to if you wanted to play online, 747 Tango Hunt was great. I think Ubisoft's MPlayer was what I moved to for Rogue Spear and IL2
Well, so much for Saints Row 2. Volition has no right to even touch the PC version. The company that had the rights is gone.
you were lucky to get that miserable port to work in the first place, let alone play it in co-op
I'm surprised how calm you guys are responding to this news. This seems way bigger in my eyes then GfWL. Like there are a shit ton of games that use Gamespy as there multiplayer back-end.
Private masterservers do exist for several gamespy games, such as Deus Ex. Still a shame though, not sad to see gamespy go - just the impact it'll have.
I wonder who'll take over the mantle of Gamespy after this?
Right now it looks like Steamworks will, it's where most Gamespy and GFWL games seem to be moving to. Well fuck... there goes a lot of games I play. And I have a feeling no one will be able to fix this. It's been fun.
Oh shit, does this mean Dawn of War 1's multiplayer will cease to exist too?
Awww fuck.
Well fuck... there goes a lot of games I play. And I have a feeling no one will be able to fix this. if battlefield 2 goes down does that mean project reality goes with it?
Railroad Tycoon 3 is also going to be down for the count.
RIP SoF Best game I ever played on dial up.
It'll be really sad if Halo Custom Edition isn't playable anymore, it's still really fun today. And not really fair since Microsoft abandoned Halo for the PC
Does anyone have, or can make a list of games that use GameSpy?
Does anyone have, or can make a list of games that use GameSpy?
Google is your friend: http://arena.gamespy.com/platform/pc/
Well, when I was younger and playing a lot of Tony Hawk games, we used to call it "Gayspy" to shit on it since we felt it was a weak server host, but at the same time it provided me with so many memories, from random shit said in chat rooms to getting all sorts of gaming news, especially on those "Planet" sites. Makes me wanna check right now if any of those Planet sites are dead yet, and if not, if they will be when they stop hosting. Planetgrandtheftauto redirects to IGN Planettonyhawk just goes to the Gamespy homepage Assuming Planethalflife does something similar. Some sad shit....although maybe there is some saved cache of those pages
I used to play Stronghold Crusader a lot through Gamespy. It's sad to see it go now.
That's Borderlands 1 gone as well.
Flight Simulator X???? Nooo!
Soldier of Fortune Platinum. The game that got me into multiplayer FPS gaming as a kid - they still have a semi active community too... rest in peace, sweet prince.
If you own Arma 2 outside Steam your server browser will break.
Bye bye Rome: Total War multiplayer.
