im pretty sure engine failure immediately after takeoff is way worse than high up in the air

Yea the problem here is that because it happened right after takeoff he had nowhere to go but to attempt a 180 turn and land in the golf course. Knowing the area there and flying in and out of the airport myself there isn't much for a landing area except for the airport. When engine failures happen higher up you have more time to glide to an airport or at least an open field.

More often than not, they do. Depends on the type of fuel being used. Prop planes are less likely to go up in flames than jet engines, but other things come into the picture, like... hydraulic fluid.
