How much do you Americans have to pay for University?
How much do you Americans have to pay for University?
My college before grants and schlarships is $35,180 not sure if that is per semester or year. I was lucky enough to get a ton of schlarships and a few grants so it is costing me a little over $12,000 a year plus supplies (another $200-300 mainly books). My family can get by but it means my parents are living paycheck to paycheck due to an extra $1000 bill every month for the payment plan. I really wish NC would follow California's example. [editline]also[/editline] Also with the government loans I am recieving I will owe roughly $20,000 once I graduate. Even if I declare bankruptcy it has to be payed off in 15 years, otherwise they start taking all my shit and forcing any employer to deliver my check to the government.
How are you getting that if you're middle class? I genuinely want to know; limitations on assistance are confusing as hell.
Well there's three types of BOG waiver: BOG A -- For students and/or a student's parent who are currently receiving some form of public assistance (AFDC, TANF, CalWORKs, SSI, and General Relief). Proof of cash benefits for the current or previous month must be provided at the time of application to be considered for a BOG A. A BOG A cannot be awarded by filing a FAFSA. BOG B -- Based upon current household size and total 2011 income for the student and/or student's parent(s). Income standards are provided by the state Chancellor's Office. Proof of total 2011 income may be required. A BOG B may be awarded based upon the income and household size information provided on the FAFSA. BOG C -- Must demonstrate at least $1,104.00 worth of financial need in order to qualify, effective beginning with the Fall 2012 semester. Our family's in the ~$60,000 income bracket, 'round about, so we got the BOG B.
Uhhh....getting involved does not change the fact that the courses I want to take at NADC cost ~$35,000, yet my family can barely afford a tenth that and I can't afford a damn thing. I looked into every fucking grant in the book. Either they had insane requirements(AP english to learn how to build V8s properly? What the fuck? Knowing shakespeare doesn't help me squeeze another 35 horsepower out of an LS7...), they required me to be a minority, they required me to be in an even poorer family, or they flat out aren't accepted at NADC. The only way I'm going to school is if I get student loans, and even then I can't pay those off because every place I've applied to between summer 2007 and today doesn't even have the balls to tell me they don't need me, so I can't find work either. It's fucking frustrating. I want to go to school, the school I want is right down the road and teaches exactly what I want to learn without making me pay for bullshit classes I'll never use, but nobody that can pay my way through is willing to do so and I can't pay my own way through. A bill like this would lower the bill to the point my folks could afford to put me through the schooling I want, and a few shiny new ASE certifications will have me working a job I enjoy in fairly short order.
Then make sacrifices? The school I am going to wasn't my first choice. Yea, I wanted go to MSOE (Milwaukee School of Engineering) because it is a better school, but I couldn't afford it. It is 35k a year. So I made a difficult choice; Go to school I can afford and get a degree, or don't go at all. Yes, the college system sucks, middle class people get screwed, but just because you can't afford to go to your dream school, doesn't mean money should be handed to you.

Not everyone lives in a place where there are universities to choose from, and may well not be able to move to a place where there are. If people are getting screwed something should be done about it, not hand-waved in the name of promoting 'personal responsibility' or self-sacrifice.
We have a pretty decent college here, and there are so many scholarships for kids who have completed highschool while a resident here. My brother saved nearly 2/3 of the normal price. Good to see California moving into the right direction, hopefully.

I didn't need to spend 35k a year to get an education. I can spend 10k, and get a very similar education, with almost identical job opportunities. He is making the choice to not accept loans or go to a different school. People are just relying too much on people getting money (grants/scholarships) handed to them. And like he said, he got turned down all the grants/scholarships he applied to, what is going to make this one any different? Scholarships are meant to be given to people who busted their ass off in high school to get that 4.0, not to the average joe who got a 2.8. I happened to be one of them who slacked off, and now I am paying for that by working two jobs and being a Resident Assistant.

And oh yeah, god forbid that guy with a B average gets into college without paying tremendously out the ass. Only students with a 4.0 are allowed to get into college without paying for it. And I'll say it again, not everyone lives in an area where you can just 'pick a cheaper school', and chances are if they can't afford the tuition, they can't afford to pick themselves up and move somewhere else either.

And here's another wonderful quote from our friendly neighborhood California State Assembly Republicans, courtesy of the KPBS article:
The bill required Republican support in order to pass, but Assembly member Brian Jones made it clear that would not come from him. “What a great concept we have here today, let’s take from the evil greedy rich corporations and let’s give to the needy middle class, what honorable Robin Hoods we have here today," said Jones.
Aren't Republicans trying in part to run on a platform that they'll strengthen the middle class? Because that's obviously not the message Mr. Jones is conveying.
