thank you for understanding the joke.
Hey so why doesn't Monsanto also require that farmers sell the harvest to them as well, so they can control both ends of the agriculture industry? That'd make them lots of money and be totally okay, right?
Because nobody would sign such a contract, unless they got paid a great deal of money.
Plus it would cause admin and overhead to explode.
Man, cause iD totally shut down after making their engines open source with each new generation.
Man. Cause Valve totally shut down after giving out and hosting resources that aid in content creation.
Shitty argument.
Monsanto doesn't use terminator seeds though.
Monsanto doesn't use terminator seeds though.
He's right, technically. Monsanto made a pledge in 1999 not to use them. Doesn't mean that they don't use them, but there's not much evidence to the contrary afaik.

They didn't go through with their original plan to use terminator seeds, but the end result is the same - you can't replant Monsanto seeds without paying them money. It's just now that instead of having to buy new seeds because the second generation of seeds were sterile, now it's that you'll just get sued or have to make an out-of-court "arrangement" with Monsanto if they find out you're re-planting.

You do realize that the seeds would have completely prevented contamination of the local environment if any seeds got out, and that farmers who had seeds blow onto their fields couldn't be sued because they were sterile?
They produce seeds that cause the second generation to be duds.
No they don't. They just make you sign a contract that basically enforces the same thing.
And they'll sue the shit out of you if do use 2nd generation seeds.

To me, that's the same damn shit, just with a different paintjob.

Well they only sued 11, and had about 150 cases settled outside of court.

Are you seriously defending them because it stops one of Monsanto's shittiest practices
I...
what?
You do realize Monsanto is the reason that so many bees died, and the bees basically went endangered because of their shitty genetically modified crops. Right? Monsanto is even designing robotic bees, to replace their natural counter part, for when they eventually own the entire worlds food supply and all the bees are dead. But nope, totally nothing sketchy happening in this company! Monsanto: Because we're the kind of rich people that DO care about the poor. Trust us!

If it stops a shitty practice, then why not do it?
If it stops a shitty practice, then why not do it?

because the shitty practice shouldn't exist in the first place
i hope you get crohns disease, might stem the tide of shit that you spew

I'd actually like a source, this reads like an onion article.

I really shouldn't, but you're either an idiot who actually believes this shit or a genius who's worked out the exact way to annoy me - either one's moderately irksome

You forgot the 3rd possibility:
He's an idiot who actually believes this shit who's worked out the exact way to annoy you.

Sobotnik's master plan was to post this just to goad irritation out of Generic Monk, clearly.

normally i'm able to read badly researched insulting shit like this all day and say nothing more than 'hmm, how interesting', but i think a few days ago something in my brain snapped and now I can't read this stuff without wanting to tear my throat out - i think i'll just stay out of the more controversial threads for a while
I do admit that Monsanto has bad business practices, but you also have to admit some of these arguments against it are complete bollocks.
Terminator seeds aren't used.
The farmer signs a contract with the company to use the seeds. (Yes, Monsanto is also obligated to uphold their side of the bargain).
Of the 250,000 people who have signed contracts in the USA, only 11 have been sued.
The food is regulated for safety by multiple organizations, and the scientific consensus is that GM food is safe.
Why not argue about agricultural subsidies or the rent-seeking activities of the company?

I didn't say that was completely related to this thread, I was just responding to your interpretation of events with something that I thought quite apt. I disagree with his interpretation of events and think it's a bit stupid and naive, that's all.
So...you post an image macro instead
The issue with GM seeds is the fact of the company who made the seed orginally, owning the seed and since they have contracts on their use (as said before, no replanting of seeds) - Well it just screws over the farmers, wastes the product they buy and is makes the whole GM produce one corporate mess.
GM is good but you should not be allowed to govern your seeds once bought. GM research should be funded by the government or something which is for non-profit as it's to better man kind and our crops and not greedy corporations who want to hold back the industry with lawsuits and greedy practices.
If they're so proud of their product why are they spending millions to lobby against laws that would force GM ingredients to be labelled?

Seeds should be for profit. Farmers have been operating on a for-profit basis for a few thousand years (even subsistence farmers trade away some of their crop to get something).
The state should not be given control over the production of food. Monsanto has unfortunately managed to influence the state quite a bit, and is part of the problem in agriculture these days.
If you want improvements, you should divorce the state from companies like Monsanto. Part of the reason that companies can often do bad practices is because of subsidizing or protection from the state.

Because it's a pointless regulation which does nothing (The information is already in the nutrition bit).
This is just anti-gm people shit-stirring.
What a great Idea, lets trust our food with the same company that developed Agent Orange.
