• The UN wants to form treaty to gain complete control over the Internet.

I remember getting into an argument and telling the guy the UN would fall apart in our lifetime. He thought I was crazy. I wonder if he will think that now?
I'll say it again: This is an op-ed by a guy from the American FCC, hardly a definitive statement regarding some 'UN Agenda'.
World leaders are really playing with fire these days...
Hey, Russia. Russia, hey, listen. Listen, you too China. NO.
I'd rather an non-profit organisation monitored by the U.N. control the internet than the U.N. having control over the Internet That being said it couldn't hurt to move the ICANN headquarters the the international Zone in New York (even Geneva really) for the sake of transparency on an international scale, it being in California gives the US a bit too leverage than I would like.
For the dumbfucks who are saying that the UN is just sucking the US dick read this: The United Nations HQ is located in an international zone within New York, this means that no country has the authority of who works there. Secondly, the UN is only following the orders from the General Assembly/Security Council. These orders come from votes from the countries. The Security Council was instated for good reasons, it is one of the vital things that prevent wars in the UN. Of course, a few of it's resolutions are total bullcrap but that is because of the veto right. The veto thing is stupid but it's the only thing that prevents wars. If all the countries in the UN went against Russia for example Russia would go batshit insane and go to war. This is the reason why the vetoing was in stated, to provide balance. TL;DR: The UN is a good orginisation and it's not their fault BS reasons go through but it's the countries fault.
It's funny. Only thing to be censored here in Denmark since ever is the Pirate Bay. EVERYTHING else seems to be up for grabs... Yeah well, cept for kid-fucking.
Yeah, but the problem still remains that our gov still wanted to support ACTA, which makes me think they would assume a similar position of opinion concerning this. Especially considering the current state minister is incredibly corrupt, in the capitalistic way. (For all Dane's remember the Payment Circle "Betalings Cirklen" in Copenhagen? No wonder it was a scam.) However, on the international scale: My biggest fear is that, not far from now, people have simply become too docile to even act, getting the general idea of "If I don't say shit, shit won't happen to me" which is exactly what an oppressive government want you to think. Call me paranoid, call me a conspiracy nutter, but I deeply fear the world is becoming far too careless with the general "Meh, can't be bothered" attitude towards government corruption. But then again, it's understandable: A good dog is rewarded, a bad dog gets put down..

Instead of incessantly raging at the entire collective U.N., rage at the countries who are sponsoring this bill.
Instead of incessantly raging at the entire collective U.N., rage at the countries who are sponsering this bill.
All of my 's.
Some dystopian bullshit right there.
I wish governments would leave the internet alone. Atleast they can´t censor my dreams.
Atleast they can´t censor my dreams.
Don't give them ideas.
Instead of incessantly raging at the entire collective U.N., rage at the countries who are sponsoring this bill.
You put too much credit in the intelligence of Facepunch.
Don't give them ideas.
"You can now purchase your dreams, directly from the iTunes store, for only 30$ per month!"
...Its an interesting sociological experiment to point out that not only did a lot of people jump onboard and believe it. EVEN though the source is very questionable. EVEN though its the fact that this must be pushed by multiple nations and the UN itself cannot actually push this. So from what I've studied and seen. A large amount of facepunchers, by this test group, are willing and looking for any sort of conspiracy, idea of conspiracy or just the very notion of a large group gaining control of something they don't agree with. Without evidence, without reputable sources, a majority jumped onto this without hesitation. Its an interesting sociology going on.
What the fuck man? What the fuck?
Them UN representatives are way too old fashioned to successfully take over the internet. We must stand our ground and begin a revolution against these corporate dinosaurs.
I call bullshit on the SOPA bandwagon.
I call bullshit on the SOPA bandwagon.
Why you have a SOPA image as your profile picture then?

Russia and China, of course.
Uncanny.
I personally like this image better. The holographic Earth makes it so much cooler than the one in the first Deus Ex.
How would that even be possible?
Russia and China shouldn't be allowed to even touch the internet.
old men running the world
Congratulations, the UN is feeding hungry people so that justifies them taking ownership of a thing they have absolutely no right to.
Congradulations, you didn't fucking read the article. This isn't the UN's doing, it's Russia and Chinas.
The UN is a joke, they can't do anything without sucking the Security Council's dick and they sure as shit can't stop a single fucking genocide or war, you know, the thing they were created to prevent. The United Nations is one of the largest failures in history for the simple fact that they fail at what they set out to accomplish, and they rely on NATO to pick up about all the slack.
Yeah, humanitarian aid is a real fucking joke. how DARE they help them. They should go the US route and just kill people.
The United Nations was not founded to keep control of things governments want, it was created because we looked at what Hitler had done and we said "Never again." The organization has become a corrupt hellhole where you could see planes crash into buildings outside of your fucking head office and then file paperwork, discuss it then bring it to a vote to figure out if you should offer help or just sit on your ass. The United Nations has failed so terribly since it's forming it has become a joke among people. Bangladesh, East Timor, Cambodia, Guatemala, Bosnia, Burundi, Rwanda, Sudan, Congo. Holy fuck, for an organization dedicated to the betterment of mankind they must put a larger priority on feeding a few people then upon saving the lives of those being slaughtered like cattle based on some trivial factor about their person.
This WHOLE fucking paragraph is devoid of any understanding of the fucking UN. A majority of UN missions are either ongoing or considered successes. Not EVERY fucking mission is a failure. And not every failure was so much do to the unwillingness to fight like UNAMIR. The UN Assistance missions are not players or coaches, they are referees. Romeo Dallarie said that, same guy you source down the post. The UN does a fuckload of things, just because a handful don't work, doesn't mean the organisation is a failure. If the UN were to be dissolved, the fucking world would fall.
Didn't know owning the internet feel under that mandate.
Good thing They are not looking to do that. Or maybe you would have known that if you weren't such a pillock who can't read past the title.
The United Nations is always at work, just never working the job they are actually tasked with, trying to please the big 5 instead.
I will agree the 5 veto nations is a bullshit idea that should be removed, but that doesn't mean the whole UN should be removed.
Want to learn more about how much of a failure the United Nations is? Read Shake Hands With The Devil, the commander of UN mission in Rwanda wrote about how at every request for troops he issued, he was constantly turned down.
I've read it, and I've followed Dallaire for a while. The failure in Rwanda isn't just the UN's fault. According the Dallarie, even if the UN gave him higher resources, he couldn't have done more, it would have certainly helped, but it wouldn't have stopped the genocide. Now, since you're thick as absolute fuck, you wouldn't know this, but the UN voted a resolution to continue UNAMIR and reinforce it with a joint PKF force from around the world. This was up to the nations to do, they did not. This isn't a UN fuck up but a government fuck up as a whole. The UK, US, France, and Belgium are all at fault, even more so than the UN. YOU need to learn to read into things better. I tell you what, look into history, and the people ie Dallaire, you source before actually commenting. Saying Rwanada was 100% the UN's fault is absolute bullshit. The Belgians, French, Americans, British, etc, they ALL failed miserably, they sent in soldiers, huge amount of forces for one purpose, evacuating the whites. Theres guys weren't fucking UN troops, these were full blown national soldiers. The Americans have bases within days hours from Rwanda just sitting there doing nothing, the Belgian Paracommandos were IN the country. The French occupied the airports, they were using it to GIVE weapons to the fucking people initiating the genocide. The one thing you got right was this "every request for troops he issued was turned down" and you're 100% correct, but the UN wasn't turning it down. Quite the opposite, the follow up resolution had nations agree to give additional aid, the nations DID NOT. Do your research.
Oh you mean the US supporting Gaddafi years before the revolution...?
US government =/= UN [editline]22nd February 2012[/editline]
Instead of incessantly raging at the entire collective U.N., rage at the countries who are sponsoring this bill.
This is implying people is smart enough to read past the fucking title. I dont mind UN having control over the internet.
