(How does one have a church dedicated to not believing in something? Isn't that kind of the opposite of what churches were made for?)

So, according to the article:
Essentially, the atheistic church is a place where people with similar beliefs to assemble without the fear or threat of being judged.
...so like a community group?
There is this one coming to Australia called 'The Sunday Assembly', and from what I gather it's a place which encourages 'helping people, living better and wondering more'. Also, there's this quote from their charter:
3. [It] Has no deity. We don’t do supernatural but we also won’t tell you you’re wrong if you do.
and also
9. We won’t won’t tell you how to live, but will try to help you do it as well as you can
So basically, they are 'churches' in the sense of a congregation of people with similar ideas, rather than a place that encourages 'atheist gospel', I guess.
Though there are many cases of aggressive atheism on the internet, which is what it's known for.
I thought one of the points of being atheist was so that you didn't waste your one life on traditional religious practices?
Agnosticism - I don't know if there is a god
Atheism - There is no god
Theism means the belief that at least one deity exists.
The a before theism in atheism comes from the Greek, ἀ, it's used to make a word that means the opposite of the word that you're prefixing it to.
Thus atheism is defined as a lack of belief that at least one deity exists.
But there's so many bloody definitions floating around, if you want a meaningful way of figuring out where a person stands on an issue, ask them.

They arre not mega churches, or a regular church for that matter. There is no "preaching" of atheism.
Its literally just a community center. They use the term "Church" as a joke.
[editline]12th November 2013[/editline]
Like, really, that is genuinely all it is. A community center that uses the term "Church" as a joke and reference to the fact that churches are known to be places where community members regularly gather and organize community events.

Or you could just look it up on a dictionary
Regardless of how your definition doesn't make any sense, but I won't go there
I'm glad people like this exist in the world. It reminds me that I can never become the dumbest person on the planet which makes me happy. :downs:
The whole atheists are fedora wearing neckbeards are so wrong and unfunny and never were funny to begin with.
You aren't as smart as you would like to think.
I wouldn't build a community lot and call it an Atheist Church. You cannot really get any dumber than that with philosophy or naming things.
atheism is a distinct belief system that the world is better off without the current institution of religion and the idea of a deit
(that's antitheism)
finally people from /r/atheism have a place to go on sunday morning
Atheism isn't a religion, it's a lack thereof
So why do they have religious buildings
My guess is that certain types of atheist want to get together and circlejerk
(User was banned for this post ("Didn't read the OP" - Megafan))
*atheists do something*
"Lmao fedora neckbeard mlp euphoric circlejerk assholes!!"

Funfact: Most people here are atheists. Myself included
This is still fucking stupid
[editline]oh hamburgers[/editline]
Admittedly I may have reached a bit far on this post.
Funfact: Most people here are atheists. Myself included
This is still fucking stupid
Most people here are self loathing atheists who think they have to tiptoe around religion and consider themselves the shining beacon of tolerance because they dont criticize religion. Thats not even whats happening here. Its a community center that ANYONE can attend. It just doesnt mention deities. Whats stupid about that?
How come everytime atheists try to organize, even if its not for the purpose of criticizing religion, they are always labeled assholes?
It's more the fact that the idea of an atheist church is fucking retarded. Atheists have literally one unifying quality, the lack of belief in a god. Besides that, there's nothing tying them together.
you could say the same thing about anything ever
obviously they have more than just one unifying quality, else this article wouldnt exist
dont see how thats retarded
Funfact: Most people here are atheists. Myself included
This is still fucking stupid
Another funfact: Plenty of people on this site go in to a stupid frenzy whenever Atheism is brought up trying to find some way to mock it to make themselves look better in comparison.

Read the article.

how come every time we talk about atheists its always the same group of white people with fedoras even though many religions in the world are atheistic religions
the fourth-largest religion in the world is an atheist one
They're also humans prone towards socialization with other humans.
I'm not sure you've met many atheists :v:
The one in the article sounds alright though. Still seems strange to call it an atheist church if it's more of a community center, though.
I explained it on the last page. Its a joke and a reference to the fact that churches are commonly the center of their local communities and a frequent gathering place locals to socialize and organize. It's trying to fulfill that same role.
I'm not sure you've met many atheists :v:
Have you?
I'm an atheist and find this straigh up ridiculous.
I'm primarily an apathetic agnostic (which is in my own words) I believe there may be a god or multiple gods, though I am not attached to any specific one. They cannot be proven or disproven through scientific or religious research and if they do exist they seem to have no attachment to the fate of mankind and therefore do not directly affect me.
However one of the wonderful things about depression is you cling onto little things and I've found over time I've slowly become more spiritual to the point I'm considering adopting Unitarianism which is a rejecting of the doctrine of the trinity (There is only one God, not the father, the son and the holy ghost) and openly states that the bible is inaccurate and should be taken with a grain of salt (Jesus was a prophet, not a literal son of god, etc.)
