I was treating Facepunch as a single entity, not as a community.
why do people still do this

"we dislike the idea of a religion ruling over people within buildings" "lets build a building to teach that religions are wrong" the fuck is this pre-school?
"we dislike the idea of a religion ruling over people within buildings" "lets build a building to teach that religions are wrong" the fuck is this pre-school?
That's exactly what it is. You've figured it out. Congratulations.
agnosticism to me sounds just like a declaration of statement. no shit we can't know if there is or isn't a god. And I don't see how a person just isn't able to take sides, either you think there is a god or you don't. It seems more like a thinking "phase" you go through instead of an actual position on the issue.
*tips fedora*
Mooooom! It's not a fedora it's a trilby!
"we dislike the idea of a religion ruling over people within buildings" "lets build a building to teach that religions are wrong" the fuck is this pre-school?
yeah because this is totally an actual atheist church and not just a community center that doesn't mention god (which wouldn't be a church btw (but this totally is a church anyway))
Moreover, the institution, a non-profit like traditional churches, does not have a doctrine and allows anyone, with any belief, creed, religion, or culture to attend. The only difference is that there is no mention of a Godly creation, Higher Power, Supreme Being, or idol for worship.
totally an atheist church !!!
"we dislike the idea of a religion ruling over people within buildings" "lets build a building to teach that religions are wrong" the fuck is this pre-school?
I don't know what's worse the idiots who don't read an article but try to pass of their self-justified judgement or all those epic fedora memes on the first two pages
I don't think this is quite as silly as some of you guys think it is. One of the main draws of religion is the sense of community people get from it. This is obviously meant to help people get that same benefit of attending a church without making it a religious practice. Think of it as a community center.
Atheism isn't a religion, it's a lack thereof So why do they have religious buildings
It's not a religious building. It's a non-religious building.
why do people still do this
A) Comedic effect B) It is true, to an extent. The ratings system encourages a single point of view rather than many diverse points of view. This is why it was removed in the Mass Debate forum.
Reportedly, agnostic mega-churches or organizations are cropping up globally and in America

globally and in America
America confirmed for not being on this planet.
I dont understand why some of you try so hard to not look like one of "those atheists!!!", there was like one shitty community of anti-religious people with bad dress sense on reddit that one time and now you guys act like its a black mark on the face of non-belief forever and we should all feel terribly guilty we let it happen. why?

The same thing happens to anime, furries, bronies, feminisim, etc.

Even though memes are banned here that one always seems to slip by, I guess it's because many people don't realize it's just a shitty meme that generalizes an entire group into something they're not.
*tips fedora*
You sir, win the internets. *tips fedora* m'lady
I don't even like calling myself atheist, there are too many idiots under that guise. If anyone asks, I'm unreligious.
I don't even like calling myself atheist, there are too many idiots under that guise. If anyone asks, I'm unreligious.
There's idiots in every group. Including in groups such as "unreligious".
People detest others for having a belief they don't like that they turn the disagreement with the feeling towards others into a belief of their own. It's moronic. It beats the purpose. I can beautifully imagine these people ending up as violent in the name of their not-religion as they blame some the religious people for being. It ironically proves the point that religion fills a kind of hollow in the minds of many people, and while some disagree with filling it with the idea of god, they just go and fill it with the idea of not-god. They are a parody of their own sorry existence.
Did anyone really read the article? It isn't that bad, just a congregation point or social gathering, not a real life circlejerk.
Did anyone really read the article? It isn't that bad, just a congregation point or social gathering, not a real life circlejerk.
If anything, it's more of a community center that tends to have a higher proportion of atheist folk. I suppose that wouldn't make a very good sensationalist headline though, would it?
The irony of this hurts me. People who don't believe in higher powers or religious things dedicate a church to their view. (User was banned for this post ("Didn't read the OP" - Megafan))
The irony of this hurts me. People who don't believe in higher powers or religious things dedicate a church to their view.
The stupidity of your post saddens me.
There's a clear defining line between Atheism and Antitheism that people need to have a clearer grasp on: Atheism - Lack of a belief in deities Antitheism - Opposition of belief in deities Sadly, a lot of people confuse these terms and publicly lambast religious communities under the guise of straight atheism. That being said, I wouldn't support a church of freeformed beliefs for the (very likely) chance that it would cross the line past atheism into antitheism under radical movements. So what if you don't like being judged? Become a shining example for those others instead by not judging your fellow men.
It is true, to an extent. The ratings system encourages a single point of view rather than many diverse points of view. This is why it was removed in the Mass Debate forum.
Only reason it was removed was to force people to actually comment on/argue things and not just rely on ratings to speak for them. It has nothing to do with FP hivemind.
On the contrary, non-believers like to discuss God and religious beliefs a lot. In fact studies have shown non-believers actually know more about religion than religious peoople themselves.
Born and raised Catholic, read the bible, decided to go on my own. I imagine I can't be the only one. I later read it over again so that I would be prepared to argue against religious folk. The Christian Right in America is by far the most shocking to me: the "American Dream" and Christianity are not compatible ideals. Mathew 19:24 - "And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God."
I know of people who call themselves atheists but simply use "the universe" where other people would use the word "God" like "The Universe decided to give me a break today" I feel like these people are basically theists but don't want to be railroaded into the beliefs that come with any religion.
A lot of people feel spiritual but don't really know how to describe it to people. Vast majority of us were taught that there were several large scale religions, some cults, and atheists. Education in this field is lacking big time.
The irony of this hurts me. People who don't believe in higher powers or religious things dedicate a church to their view.

Only 45% of Americans would vote for an atheist president even if they were qualified. Do you know what's not helping? Most of the people in this thread. You are literally discrediting your own beliefs (yes "agnosticism" is a form of atheism).

"we dislike the idea of a religion ruling over people within buildings" "lets build a building to teach that religions are wrong" the fuck is this pre-school?
READ THE ARTICLE BEFORE POSTING. Fuck it's like they all woke up today and decided "Hey, I want to look stupid in front of everybody, but how? Oh I got it, let's comment on something I don't even understand! PILE ON THE FUNNIES GUIZ =D=D=D"
Born and raised Catholic, read the bible, decided to go on my own. I imagine I can't be the only one. Mathew 19:24 - "And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God
The fact that you didn't quote that in context shows that while you may have read the Bible, you definitely didn't understand it. The entire context reads: "23 And Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly I say to you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.' 25 When the disciples heard this, they were very astonished and said, 'Then who can be saved?' 26 And looking at them Jesus said to them, 'With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.'" - Matthew 19:23-26 The entire point of the verse is that it is impossible for a rich man to work his way into the Kingdom of heaven. Only through God is it possible. By no means does the Bible preach that one SHOULD be wealthy, but it also doesn't preach that being wealthy is inherently negative. Remember, it doesn't say money is the root of all evil, but that the LOVE of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Oftentimes people become rich because they love money and therefore their wealth gets in the way of righteousness.
I really don't know if I should laugh or cry at this thread. And here I thought my grandparents hated atheists, now I see that it was just a mild dislike. But at least they can do it without cracking jokes about neckbeard fedoras xd

If you love your fellow man, you love God, and you follow the teachings of Jesus, you should be insuring the well-being of everyone using your wealth. Expecting a "job creators" reply, which is easily countered by science showing small business is in fact responsible for most job growth. So no, "American Dream" and Christianity are not compatible ideals.

Wow I thought you couldn't get dumber than a certain threshold without an inherent disability This really lowers the bar the whole point of atheism is to not have a church right? (User was banned for this post ("Didn't read the OP" - Megafan))
