the whole point of atheism is to not have a church right?
What is it with people and not reading the article? This is one of those cases where it is really, incredibly obvious someone didn't read it.
Wow I thought you couldn't get dumber than a certain threshold without an inherent disability
Wow you must sound like a smarty pants for saying "retarded" in a really fucking dorky way, nerd.
READ THE ARTICLE BEFORE POSTING. Fuck it's like they all woke up today and decided "Hey, I want to look stupid in front of everybody, but how? Oh I got it, let's comment on something I don't even understand! PILE ON THE FUNNIES GUIZ =D=D=D"
The only way FPers will ever bother reading the actual article is if there's the threat of a permaban, or someone's got their nuts in a vice.
Wow you must sound like a smarty pants for saying "retarded" in a really fucking dorky way, nerd.
Or maybe I just didn't want to say retarded out of fear of offending you?
Why not just call it "Fedora Appreciation Club?"
thats not agnostic thats the opposite of agnostic, agnostic means that the truth of that is unknowable
if u say there may be a god you imply thats a knowable fact which is not agnosticism yy
[editline]12th November 2013[/editline]
so many agrees and no-one knows what theism means good job facepunch studios
"They cannot be proven or disproven through scientific or religious research"
I didn't say it was knowable, I'm saying there may or may not be a god. Hence since you can neither prove nor disprove it it is irrelevant and there is no real point in discussing it because if one does exist it appears to have no effect on my life.
Hence I'm Apathetic - I have no concern over whether a deity exists or not and Agnostic - You cannot know whether a deity exists or not.
It's faith, not science.
Why not just call it "Fedora Appreciation Club?"
I don't know. That doesn't properly convey their love for cheetos and reluctance to shave or bathe.
(Read. The. Article.)
A church isn't just a place to worship. It's also a place to organize a community. That's the bigger role religion serves that people tend to flock to. So I guess an "atheist church" would be a community center.
I'd go to one of these churches, just to see what its like there
Anybody else hear money being burnt? Oh wait, that's just construction going on.
yeah, unlike Christian churches, whose construction benefits society in so many different ways
oh wait
Why not just call it "Fedora Appreciation Club?"
it just gets funnier every time!
As long as they stay out of my religion, I have no problem with them expressing their opinions on religion as they wish.

the whole point of atheism is to not have a church right?
Literally noone has ever said this, ever.
"Lol is fedora part of the dress code!"
"Atheists cant do anything right..."
"Euphoric!"
You people are part of the problem and why "Atheist Churches" exist.
Many atheists don't have a comfortable place in society, especially in the more hardcore religious parts of the United States, and many have no place to voice their opinion which is also probably why you see a lot of it online.
Before the "lol atheism euphoric mlp neckbeard" shit happened everyone would just call atheists "angsty teens", as if the rejection of the existence of a god is just some cute little thought a rebellious teenager has for a while.
Mockery online for wanting a real sense of community where everyone has at least one thing in common, similar to churches, is the last thing anyone needs.
churches and organizations are a great way for people to meet and socialise with each other dont see why thats such a problem
this is pretty much the only thing that would make sense it's if you feel like socialising with people
agnosticism is a lack of religion
atheism is a distinct belief system that the world is better off without the current institution of religion and the idea of a deit
the idea makes sense for atheism, an atheist church would just be a place to discuss moral philosophy independent of the idea of religion, which is an interesting concept
You couldn't even do a quick Google before posting this? A (without/lack of) theism (belief in a deity).
It'd be great to be in a more pure category of atheist where no-one has even mentioned nor have you heard or seen any god(s). With enough people like that one day the dictionary could be a few hundred words shorter if you take out all the words related to religious beliefs.
It's come full circle.
There should be another word for these so called atheists
But they are atheists. There is no "so called" about it.
If the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word atheist is a fedora neckbeard, there's something wrong
In communities where you can be kicked out of the family home for not believing in god and where atheists have to actually closet themselves for fear of retribution it shouldn't be hard to understand why people would want a place to congregate and speak their mind free of superstition
For some reason i feel the sermons would consist more of mythbusters episodes then Dawkins.
imagine a room full of people cheering for a dawkins youtube video on a projector
Lets celebrate our Atheism by Creating a Place of Worship for our Atheism!

And we've just witnessed the oxymoron of the year.
One of the greatest advantages of being an atheist is that you don't have to go to church.

I think I might have to switch to nothing
Another way r/atheist is making the world think Atheism is a religion, and not a lack thereof.
The NDT video on page one sums up everything about my views. If you assign a label to yourself, you better be prepared to also attach all the baggage that comes with it.
Like saying all Roman Catholics are against gay marriage. Everyone who is atheist is like /r/atheism. One bad apple can ruin the entire batch.
I believe that most people now days are more agnostic than atheist. They dont know what to think, but there is enough pressure around them that they have some belief of a higher power, but no scientific proof of it.

Objection to homosexuality is literally in the scriptures of the faith and part of the catholic dogma, some catholics may wrestle with this personally but because of this, these stances always come into question. r/atheism on the other hand is just a circlejerk community with stereotypes centred on the topic of atheism, which itself has no representation or code, because it is just a disbelief in something
In many cases people who call themselves atheists are atheist in the sense that they don't believe in a man-made god, but at the same time are agnostic in the sense that they can't disprove the existence of a higher being (but in the same way you can't disprove leprichauns) and are open to the idea, but won't just jump to the conclusion that a god is the answer to something they don't understand. People label themselves atheist in this case because in a predominantly christian or post-christian society, it would be relative to the judeo-christian god
