Unless they're not trying to?
With the state of the American education system I'm more worried about kids knowing their damn ABCs.
Aren't Bert and Ernie just roommates? Doesn't make sense for them to get married.
Good to know just by living with somebody of the same sex that must mean you should be gay to teach kids that its okay.
guess getting a roomate in college next year is going to be very awkward.
as puppets, Bert and Ernie do not have sexual preferences.
imagine if puppets did
cool, somehow acknowledging homosexuality also means we have to acknowledge that jews exist, which is apparently a bad thing?
have you ever made a good post?
i don't think you understand that THEY'RE NOT GAY. you can't suddenly make a pair of existing characters homosexual lovers for no other reason than political correctness.
how can you fail to understand that
e: on a completely different note, how is this show pushing "white values". i didn't know education and community were now exclusively "white" values, you filthy pack of racists.
for no other reason than political correctness.
are you joking haven't you read the many reasons my fellow facepunch gang has posted? not once has any of us mentioned any interested in politics.
are you fucking kidding me
i support gay marriage 100% but to everyone who wanted this: :fuckoff:
its a show for fucking toddlers, they can't even comprehend sexuality and marriage
if you want to push for gay marriage how about you go talk to your representatives, convince commonfolk that its ok,
dont go for some stupid facebook petition and have 2 fucking sesame street characters get gay married just so you can feel like you're becoming mainstream

REALLY
THE PUPPET SHOW "SESAME STREET" IS TEACHING "WHITE VALUES"
come on guys lets be closet racists, its ok as long as its against white people
why could shows for children include a straight marriage(about every fairy tale movie or show ever) but not a gay marriage?
Because it's fucked up
If you grew up watching a bunch of shows telling you its fuckin ballin' to be gay as shit then you'd be fucking gay. Teaching kids to be gay is detrimental to the human race as a whole.
it's a toddler's cartoon you fucking weirdos it doesn't need this shit, stop trying to remove the innocence of a beloved show because you think it'll help something that doesn't really need more help with right now. enough people are supporting gay marriage.
gay marriage destroys innocence, heard it here first

"Oh, you had to ask that question. No, no. In fact, sometimes we are not even friends; he can be a pain in the neck."
- Bert to Spencer Howson when asked if he and Ernie are "more than just good friends" in an ABC Brisbane radio interview, March 7, 2005. (sound bite)
they could relocate to a payperview porn channel and get some dollars

Bro Strider would definitely pay up.
NO. I support Gay marriage, but I think Marriage and relationships in general should be kept out of children's minds until they grow mature. I disagree with forcing anything to little kids who should be enjoying their childhoods anyway instead of preoccupying themselves with civil rights movements.
Actually I think it's more the parent's responsibility to educate their children about stuff like this, or even regular marriage.
Next there's going to be the Chuckle Brothers sleeping with eachother.
Can't two guys just be best buds forever? Making them gay violates the sanctity of bromance.
I'm okay with with gays and whatnot, but its moments like these where they try to force their gay pride down your throats like this that really grind my gears. Just because more states are open to gay marriage doesn't mean EVERYTHING have to be gay now. ffs it's a children show.

I'm okay with straights and whatnot, but it's moments like these where they try to force their straight pride down your throats like this that really grind my gears. Just because more states are open to straight marriage doesn't mean EVERYTHING has to be straight now. FFS it's a childrens show
I'm okay with blacks and whatnot, but it's moments like these where they try to force their black pride down your throats like that that really grind my gears. Just because more states are open to black marriage doesn't mean EVERYTHING has to be black now. FFS it's a childrens show
[editline]1[/editline]
if you don't get what I'm implying: you're basically just as bad or worse than people who complained about (for example) blacks, hispanics and asians being in childrens shows

no you're not
This is assuming all roommates are homosexuals. That'd be a stereotype, I do not support this, they should remain unmarried, besides their skits are totally unrelated to romance.

how can you follow up "I'm okay with with gays and whatnot" with that
because i really don't think you are
This is assuming all roommates are homosexuals. That'd be a stereotype,
what? where do you even get logic like this?
On the other hand, learning kids that homosexuality is normal doesn't sound like such a bad idea...
Err... isn't Sesame Street for toddlers? I just don't get having an episode about gay marriage for a little kid's show.
This might be late, but... Why? It's just as 'inappropriate' as having an episode centred around marriage between a heterosexual couple. Sesame Street is based in New York, and the state recently legalized same-sex marriage. I don't see how depicting it as normal is particularly problematic, unless you think that demonstrating to children that people of the same sex can and do get married is not normal, for whatever reason.
FYI, the African Sesame Street has a character who is HIV+, to resonate with the high amount of people there who do have HIV/AIDs. It's supposed to reflect the culture in which it exists.
[editline]15th August 2011[/editline]
Someone upthread said that they're prefer to have a gay character like the one with HIV. That makes more sense - you're still introducing the issue to children, but not inexplicably altering the relationship of two character dramatically. Have the new character get married to someone of the same-sex.
i absolutely disagree. anything children see during their formative years can have a huge impact on a child, even if they don't explicitly remember it. if children are going to be raised on television they might as well be raised on socially conscious television which doesn't patronize them on the basis of their supposed "innocence" as opposed to TV shows consisting solely of sterile number-counting exercises
So it influences children in the same way that playing violent games would?
If a person sees homosexuals in a show, they will be as supportive of homosexual marriage as a child who sees violence in a game will go out and beat up people.
Toddlers shows have heterosexual marriage, why can't they have gay marriage?
because it's pointless. i'm not saying it's a bad thing for for fuck's sakes it's fucking sesame street. it'd be fine if it were characters that came on to the show as guest stars, but bert and ernie? really?
i'm not saying it's a wrong thing, gay marriage is completely cool but come the fuck on
[editline]15th August 2011[/editline]
there's simply not enough words in the english dictionary to definitively explain my point without it being exaggerated to where people criticize words i use because they take them literally.
[editline]15th August 2011[/editline]
sesame street just really isn't the place for this
Friend recently mentioned to me the horde mentality of facepunch. I'd been giving it a bit of thought as well, and man, is it visible here.
From my observation, Bert and Ernie's segments are often about friendship, they never really seemed like they were in love to me.
They could do that with other characters, guests in an episode about it, maybe.
So it influences children in the same way that playing violent games would?

Yes (with a parenthetical reminder that we're talking about young children [<9] and not teenagers or adults).
Video games on their own won't lead a child to beating people up but they certainly influence the child in one way or another.
It's popular on facepunch to insist that video games have no impact on a person at all, and while video games certainly can't turn a normal teenager into a crazed serial killer, exposure to violence and violent media at a young age can definitely, in small part, foster some propensity for, or at least insensitivity to, violence in a child, or they can do the exact opposite; the point being that video games can certainly have some effect.
I mean you're seriously disagreeing with me that a person's attitudes and personality are party resultant of their early childhood? You're legit gonna do that?

i have the faintest, most distant inkling, whispering into my ear from the aether that if this thread were instead about the Count getting married to a woman you wouldn't have made this post
[editline]15th August 2011[/editline]
pretend we're playing skeeball. How close did I just get to the 1000 point hole?
[editline]15th August 2011[/editline]
how many chuck-e-cheese tickets am I bringing home tonight?
i'm fine with this
but couldn't they make a lesbian puppet couple instead
now that's something i'd like to see
honestly even though i think the idea of bert and ernie getting married is awesome, i can see why people would get uptight and offended by it. not that i agree with them, but i doubt this could ever happen without people raising a fuss. if there is ever going to be a recognized gay couple on sesame street, it will probably be new characters, and that's not bad. really any acceptance of gay marriage in children's programming would be fantastic and progressive; it doesn't necessarily have to be established characters.
