UUO then
Why the fuck are people arguing what it's called, fyi it's a USO, Unidentified Submerged Object http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USO_(disambiguation)
if it's an isolated ecosystem wouldn't drilling into it contaminate it
I would think so, but someone keeps telling me that ice doesn't exactly isolate it - e.g. over years, chemical and bacteria may drift to and from it through the ice.
Why the fuck are people arguing what it's called, fyi it's a USO, Unidentified Submerged Object http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USO_(disambiguation)
What if we just call it a fucking UO.
What if we stop calling it anything, seeing as it doesn't exist.
if it's an isolated ecosystem wouldn't drilling into it contaminate it
they're using a robot that's going to get really close - make itself boil - let the top about it refreeze and then drill down into the lake
ITT:debate about UFO USO UO and aliens
Still betting that there are shrimp living in yellow submarines down there.
Probably pretty late, but there's a documentary entitled 'The Lost World Of Lake Vostok' if anyone is interested in it. On topic-- Can't wait to see what they find down there, I love exploration!
I'm exited, can't wait to hear news of the drill getting there.
Oh shit guys, I just realized that if the Americans are working with them then it's inevitable that everyone will die apart from one dude with a beard and some chick
and inexplicably the black guy will live as well
If they find a certain lifeform.... when injected with dna will cause a huge explosion and half of the world is decimated. Oh boy second impact
Or they just find a dead empty lake with no life in it
Someone will probably make a fortune selling 'Lake Vostok Vodka' with some sort of filtering/distilling method using some of that water. (Cause it sounds frickin awesome). Or just a standard drinking water tbh, the type you'd see in Selfridges for £4 per 500ml bottle. Unique selling point: 14 million years old.
UFO = Unidentified Flying Object. I somewhat doubt they would find a flying object underwater
What if it crashed.
What if it crashed.
Yeah, if it crashed it would still definitely be flying.
Could this lake even hold life? I was under the impression that water needed to be regularly exposed to oxygen to sustain aquatic life.
Could this lake even hold life? I was under the impression that water needed to be regularly exposed to oxygen to sustain aquatic life.
pretty sure it does nothing's going to be down there other than dead bodies. we could find a dead cthulu body but still. EDIT: but..if it could sustain life.. holy shit guys, what if this does turn out like the thing? packing my bags moving to antartica gogogo
uh, since when has a treaty prevented research from being done. This isn't really "destruction" at all. That's like saying tagging whales with transponders is equivalent to hunting them, totally different things. It's not like we're planning to extract this water in a large mining operation.
I just hope they don't bring modern bacteria into the lake [editline]8th February 2012[/editline] ... or the opposite
It's not like we're planning to extract this water in a large mining operation.
so dead space could be happening any minute now.. annnny minute now.
Water isn't recycled when it's been trapped in an ice pocket 4km down for thousands of years. It's an isolated ecosystem in Vostok.
I've always wondered if a dinosaur took a piss in the water I'm drinking 1 billion years ago.
I've always wondered if a dinosaur took a piss in the water I'm drinking 1 billion years ago.
If you're drinking water one billion years ago I'd imagine you'd have to have quite the poor attention span not to notice the dinosaur pissing in it.
